What is New with Uber at WDW?

I have a trip coming up from Sept 24 - 28 and will be staying at Yacht Club. I love Uber but have never used at WDW but plan to utilize several times and will report back about my experiences. One think I have seen on these boards is that they can't drop you off near buses at MK and that if you are going to MK via Uber you need to request to be dropped off at the Contemporary Resort. Does anyone have recent experience with this?

We used both uber and lyft to get from our off site hotel to MK and Epcot as well as dinner each night this past March. Our driver dropped us off at the TTC when we went to MK and we took a riverboat over to the park. We were picked up at the contemporary. On another night we were droped off and picked up at the contemporary for dinner at the California grill. We had positive experiences with both uber and lyft and would use them again. If you (or any DIS member) want to try them i have promo codes for both that will give you $20. Off your first rides. That would give you $20 off the ride to your destination with uber and $20 off your return ride with lyft. Just let me know if you need the promo codes.

I use Uber and Lyft all the time both in Winter Park and in the Disney and Universal areas. They're both great. Currently I believe Uber is doing a $30 credit for new users (good for a long ride) and Lyft is doing 10 $5 ride credits. So if you were to download both apps and use them interchangeably you could definitely save quite a bit.

I will look forward to your report. I know for sure if you want to go to MK by Uber or Taxi you ask for the Contemporary.

That's correct. It automatically charges the fare + tip.

I took a look at your picture - it says it applies to TAXI fares only - not Black, SUV, or UberX. I typically always use UberX and don't really know anything about UberTAXI.

I thought that I read on these boards that Uber CANNOT pick you up at the airport, but CAN drop off from resort to airport??:confused3:confused3

Uber can not pick up at the MCO, but if you go to the Hyatt or rental car off site P/U it works. If you are at the Hyatt, there is a pin on the Ap that shows where you are at. You can move the pin, place it at or near the Hyatt for the driver to see. There is the ability to text your driver to let them know your exact location for pickup.

I read that the tip included thing changed!! They do expect a tip. I think the wording changed on Uber site as well

Uber drivers do not receive a tip included from Uber. They do not expect tips, as a driver I always ask for a 5 Star rating as I will give the rider too. If they insist on a tip I can take it. The thing is as a driver, I wash my car, vacuum and clean it before going in service. In my market I have water bottles, chargers, gum available.
As we are sub contractors we do our own paper work for taxes, I use a software that is an added cost.

The app automatically adds tip. You can adjust your preferred tip amount on the app.

It automatically adds the tip. You can just adjust the percentage.

I am an Uber driver, have been for over a year. In Indiana, not Orlando, but the platform is the same no matter where you go. Tips are NOT INCLUDED. There is NO WAY to tip within the app at all. Lyft, which is another rideshare company, you can tip within the application. Uber deleted the ability within a year of launching. Yes, when you sign up as a new passenger, there is a place to mark for gratuity, but if you read it, that is for Uber TAXI. Those are cabs who run under the platform and are only available in some major cities, you would be requesting an Uber TAXI, not an UberX or UberXL, UberSelect, etc. If you would like to tip your driver, cash is mainly the only way. Some drivers carry card readers, think paypal, squaretrade, etc, most do not, I dont personally. Uber takes the first $1 of every fare for safe rider fee (*insurance) then the next 20 to 28% of the fare. So if you want to tip your driver, it is not required, but it is appreciated. Driving for Uber is how I paid for my trip, I love it!

As far as Uber saying it is cashless system, it is, They do not advertise the fact that you cannot tip within app....if you do not believe me, please google Uber and Tips for the truth...

This post is exactly why I started this thread. I had heard that from drivers posting elsewhere on the net. I am hoping to try Uber in November and I will tip the driver! Thank you for the info. I want to try the pick up from the Hyatt idea but will be travelling alone (so nervous about the unknown)..but on a tight schedule..trying to decide if this will save me time vs. Magical express...and weigh the risks!

Great. Yet another service that was supposed to be tipless that will eventually turn into yet another "tipping is expected" service because people insist on tipping where none was originally required or expected. The whole "tipping culture" is getting out of control. Why not just legalize baksheesh in the US, so you've got to tip EVERYBODY before you can get ANYTHING done?

There's an old tradition that you never tip the owner of a business, though not everyone follows it anymore. I know I learned as a kid that if I got the barber in the first chair, I didn't have to tip him, because he was the owner.

This makes me wonder if Uber has deliberately kept tipping out of their app for all but their taxi service in order to strengthen their argument that the drivers aren't employees, but are independent contractors and thus in business for themselves. Of course, in some cities, the regular taxi drivers are also paid as independent contractors, but they rarely own the vehicle.

Possible the Uber model is not sustainable at its current rates, the drivers find that it costs more to keep a car running as a taxi than they thought, and therefore they start demanding or hinting that a little extra would appreciated.

So the Uber drivers, like taxi drivers are able to get through the resort gates without an issue to pick up and drop off? We have a few meals at other resorts and I was hoping not to have to drive, and I've had bad experiences with taxis on Disney property in the past.

Yes, god forbid you give a little extra to someone who just had your life in their hands behind the wheel. The horror of it all....

Do you hand the pilot a 5'er when you walk off the plane because they "had your life in their hands"?

So by this theory, tipping isn't a reward for good service, it's to prevent the driver from wrecking, or the server from spitting in your food, or the maid from stealing your stuff. Why should I be expected to give someone additional money to do the job THEY ARE ALREADY BEING PAID TO DO??? I don't notice my students coming up and handing me money after class and saying "great lab, Mr. Lee". Nor do I expect it, and I would be very suspicious of their motives if someone ever did that.

Note that I have no problem tipping those who's pay is based on tipping, meaning that they get paid less than minimum wage and are expected to make up the difference in tips. Here in NC that is generally only servers in restaurants.

If that is your feeling, when was the last time you tipped a Disney bus driver? A monorail pilot, a tram driver or even the ride operator?

If that was the case, I should be a rich man from tips received transporting thousands of guests from the parks to the resorts when I was a CM.

BTW, I'm still working for a living and not at WDW. (I do, however, miss that job a lot)
