What is concierge?

I don't mean to sound unsophisticated BUT isn't concierge the info./help desk in a hotel lobby.... so what is this I keep reading from people about booking their hotel with concierge? Do tell.

Concierge rooms are located at the deluxe resorts. They are on an exclusive floor or in an exclusive building (depending on how the resort is set up) and you must use your key-card to get into the concierge area. The concierge will help your plan your trip, including making priority seatings for you and accomodating special requests. The rooms are usually the same as regular rooms at the resort, but they often have upgraded toiletries and robes in the rooms. The concierge staff is there to help you while you're there as well. There is a concierge lounge with food offerings throughout the day. Usually the lounges offer pretty extensive breakfast offerings, then a few midday snacks, then evening appetizers, then desserts and cordials. Some people say that there is enough food to make a meal off of, but that hasn't been my experience. However, there is definitely enough food for a good, filling snack and to fill me up for breakfast. Hope this helps! :)

Concierge can cost an additional $100 to $150 per day when booked in advance. We got lucky and were offered an upgrade for only $40 per night when checking in the the Wilderness Lodge last August.

For a family of four, it was worth the $40 for breakfast alone. Would not even come close to even if we paid over $100.

You can check out rack rates for concierge at mousesavers.

Thank you. Wow, it is a lot of money. I guess if you "luck out" and get an upgrade for a low price then I would definitely take advantage of the concierge service.

I'm wondering, do those you pay "top dollar" for the concierge service feel it is still worth it (I'm guessing yes or they wouldn't do it). I take it the breakfast and dinner snacks are more than just muffins, coffee, etc.?

Is it true that with concierge service you automatically get PS's you want (I read somewhere that a family for an 8:05 a.m. Cindy's ressie because they had concierge service and only made the ressie 2 weeks out?).

There are many people that feel the concierge is worth it ....others disagree. IMHO love the concierge level, but then again I am the type of person that will pay for a butler to unpack my clothes!
Before your arrival you are called by the concierge plannner. They will discuss your WDW trip with you and make all p/s for you. They will even call the ones for you that need to be called 10 days, 45 days out for you so you do not have to watch the calender and get up early to make the calls. Tell them what you want and they do it for you. From what I have read here the p/s made thru concierge have a different status than a p/s that you would make for yourself, I don't know if it's true but I read it on these boards.
Upon arrival to the Resort, you are greeted by a smiling Concierge CM by name with a warm welcome and are taken to the concierge level for check in so there is no need to go to the lobby with your bags, to wait in line and check in - very nice. I can only comment about the GF RPC rooms which are in the main building in which you gain accesss to the floor by your card which is put into the slot on the elevator keyboard. I have found the rooms to be a bit larger and have more creature comforts. The breakfast offerings are wonderful...more than enough. Fruits, cereals, juices, water, coffee, teas, baked goods, muffins, bagels and toasters....lots of stuff and plenty of it, if you have a big appetite. There area is beautiful with a full view of the GF lobby and large windows which look over the MK. There are also televisions with Disney movies playing for the kids, and plenty of places to sit. You can also take your breakfast to your room if you wish. Between offerings there is always something out - cookies, brownies, bottles of water, and other things to drink. I have never stopped in at lunch time as we are always in the parks. We do however stop in late afternoon, grab a cookie and some water go back to the room and freshen up a bit then head back out. In the evening though, they serve lovely appetizers, and hot foods and a nice wine selection, no charge. I guess it depends on your appetite but I would not make a meal out of it since we always love to go out for dinner. I have a glass or two of wine and a few nibbles while getting ready for dinner. I have read here that some people make a meal of it, I personally would not, but I guess you could due to the amount and selection of food served. When you retrun from your dinner your will find a beautiful array of desserts and after dinner cordials. We find the added luxury worth it, but that is what we like. I think for the amount of planning service, added ammenities, and food offerings it is worth it for us. From staying both ways, I prefer the concierge level. We also find we spend less money when we stay concierge. It may seem like more money in the beginning but when you are done and add up all your receipts, we always come out ahead when we stay GF RPC.
The concierge staff is different when you are on the concierge level. There is a seperate desk on the 4th floor exclusively for concierge guests. They will do and cna get you anything you need. One year my sneakers were very uncomfortable and I needed a new pair. We did not want to waste time looking for sneakers so we went to the concierge desk, told the CM what I needed and a few hours later there was a new pair of Nike's in my room. Cant't beat that

:smooth:

Hi there Gonga,

I had the butler service on Celebrity Cruise Lines when were were in a suite.. it just "came with" the suite.

We boarded at 1pm and went to have lunch as the cabin was not ready - when we went to it later all out clothes were unpacked and the butleress (woman lol) had a steam iron and was pressing everything.

It was a little wierd finding all my lingerie etc, neatly folded in the drawers with little sachets of potpourri - just the thought of someone handling your things lol

Anyway.. it's not something I normally would even think of doing - but it was neat that one time

My experience with concierge was great. All of our PS'S where done before we arrived. It was very nice for someone else to this for me. While on the trip my husband got sick. They went, I feel, above and beyond to rearrange existing reservations when my husband could not attend. They also would check on him when I was out with my children. When we went out to dinner and handed our ID/Charge card to the waiter you noticed a difference in the way they spoke to you and the service was much faster and always much more polite. In my opinion the GF RPC is the best.

ooooooohhhhhhhh..... I shouldn't have asked all these questions because, well, let's just say I can get used to the finer things in life quick.... real quick !! And reading about Concierge service makes me think wow, I'd love that!!

Gonga: where do you feel you save when using concierge vs. non-concierge?

Hhhmmm, maybe when they call to say they need to relocate us from POFQ because of refurbishments they'll say "all we have available is GF Concierge, only $30 more a night...." dream on....

I've stayed at GF Royal Palms Club a bunch of times... Highly recommend - we've always gotten great service from Patty and Lauretta... :) They're our favorite GF ladies!

WeLoveEeyore-

When you check into any of the WDW hotels that offer concierge services, you can ask what the "upcharge" would be to upgrade to concierge. This is what we did when we checked into WL last summer, and we were offered an upgrade rate of $30 per day. Totally worth it, because we ate all our breakfasts there, and we have a 4 y/o DS who snacked there often. DH also spent a lot of time calling the resort before we left to see if there were any special upgrade prices to be had. Each time he was told no, but when we checked in, we were offered the rate.

Do all the deluxe hotels have concierge? Because we are thinking of switching up to WL from POFQ for our scheduled trip next March and were wondering if all deluxes have concierge? We had a little "snafu" with our passes this past trip and our CRO we are dealing with for the next trip said we would deal directly with her and that around December to call again and she would be sure we get a "discount" to make up for the difference in what happened this year, so I'm wondering if maybe we could get a reasonably priced "upgrade" to WL and then maybe check out the concierge service when we get there? Wouldn't that be grand!! :Pinkbounc

WeLoveEeyore - I dont know exactly where we save as I cost out the trips when we get home. We do not have children, so we save money right there! I think its because we are not buying breakfast (breakfast for us ususlly runs ~ $30.00 per day - we LOVE those press pots at the Kona:), and not buying as much bottled water - we drink lots of it, since we have wine and some nibbles before dinner, we order less at the restaurants. I think its because we are not being " nickled and dimed" as much, which in WDW can equal lots of $$$. I find for us the initial out lay of money seems more but when the trip is done, we spend less. For instance, this trip we are staying GF RPC with a Silver Plan. The trip is completely paid. If we do not want to, we do not have to spend another nickel in WDW (yeah right like that will ever happen LOL). Breakfast is served concierge, water - concierge, lunch/snack - concierge, dinner - magical wishes silver plan, wine - concierge, dessert and liquors - concierge. Also with the silver plan we get P/S for special viewing for illuminations and FITS. So even though we will go out for lunch in the parks, we are using our wishes on great meals (Citricos, Narcoossees, Cali Grill, Bistro de Paris) which is covered under the plan. So I guess the only things would be to pay is lunch, tax, gratuity and some minor charges and some t shirts.

Hi WeloveEeyore...

Be careful... a little knowledge is a dangerous thing....

My Mom always used to say

"If you have to ask how much it costs - you can't afford it" lol

Same thing with this concierge topic... if you have to ask what it is - you probably don't need it! :p

Sometimes ignorance is bliss!

I can't imagine staying at AKL without having concierge now.. it would be painful to look up and see the lounge knowing I am not allowed up there :(

you don't have to spend a lot of money to have a great time. Since we do not have children, we enjoy every bit of the resort more, so the accommodations are important to us as all our time is alone time. If we had kids and spent more time in the parks/pools etc, it really would not matter as we would not be in the room as much. What we do not have to spend on kids- since we do not have them - we make up for on vacations - LOL!

Can you tell I'm new- posted an entire thread rather than just a response! SORRY! :p

Just want to chime in real fast- the idea of upgrading to concierge once you arrive at the resort can be a really good thing, sometimes b/c its a better "overall" value especially if you already have a great discount on the room. Frankly, this is the route I like to take as I have lucked out with it in the past. BUT...if you have your heart set on concierge DO NOT TAKE THIS ROUTE! Why? You have no guarentee its available. Most of the time CMs will not offer this option outright, so you do have to ask, but it is entirely subject to availability. If its sold out or there are only 1 or 2 rooms left, chances are you won't be able to upgrade.

Also, for those of you used to off-site concierge, Disney concierge can and does seem a bit different. Having stayed at 3 different properties (GF Main Building, Poly, WL) on concierge floor as well as a multitude of Marriot, Hyatt, Westin, and Ritz-Carlton concierge levels across the country, there is a difference in sophistication, personalization, food offerings, etc. I'm not saying Disney isn't worth it, but if you are used those concierge levels you *may* be disappointed. To be honest, one of the best concierge experiences I had was at Hyatt Grand Cypress, right off of Disney property. Unparalleled personal attention, had "our" drinks waiting for us only minutes after getting up to the lounge, beautiful views of fireworks from Epcot, Magic Kingdom, and MGM from the glass hallways, and champagne available to EVERYONE- concierge and not-while we waited to check in!! Aside from that, there is a gigantic pool area and we had a huge, well-appointed room to top it off- definetely a wonderful trip aside from going to the theme parks!

So yes, that's just my two cents on the subject. I've had some good concierge experiences at Disney and love to do them when I can, but moneywise I don't know if I'd pay full rack rate for it....give me a discount and then we're talking. :D

DisneyChick02,

Would you mind sharing with me your concierge experiences at the other hotels you mentioned. You can PM me if you want.

What Ritz hotels have you stayed at? Any in Florida?

Thanks in advance for any info.

I'd love to hear more about your stay at the Hyatt Grand Cypress.

FloridaFam, would love to but my response is too long for PM. Can you PM me with an email address? I don't feel my response is on-topic for a Disney board!
