Help us settle an argument at work....we're bored. What do you consider to be a homemade cake? Person 1 thinks it's any cake that you make & bake yourself including box mix. Person 2 thinks it's a cake that is made according to a recipe without using box cake mix...she said in order to be homemade it has to be from scratch.

Like I said, we're bored today.

They're both right! If it's out of a box, it's homemade. Because it's not from the store bakery. However, if it's made from scratch then I'd call it homemade from scratch. A very important distinction!

Well, tecnically, it would be either; however, when someone says "homemade" my mind immediately goes to "they used a recipe, they used flour, eggs, etc."

I third that.

Where I used to work, homemade was a laughable tag. It was applied to anything, because "I was home when they made it" was used by one and all. :scared1:

Our code words were: from scratch, box mix (included pouch mixes), store bought and bakery. Bakery meant stand-alone bakery, not store bakery. Box mix included any recipe that included a box or pouch mix. From scratch meant you used no box or pouch mixes, and oddly enough, that included quick baking mixes such as bisquick.

Now that I don't work there anymore (:cool1:), I would say homemade means it's not store bought or bakery, and includes box mix and from scratch.

Scratch is homemade. Out of a box you could call semi-homemade, but definitely not really homemade.

I decorate cakes on the side for fun, and this is a HUGE debate between bakery owners! Personally, I think a cake is "homemade" if it is made from scratch; no chemicals, no artificial ingredients, nothing that grandma wouldn't have used!

Homemade- you made some sort of transformation to ingredients in your house
Scratch- no box

Homemade is scratch!
If someone put two cakes in front of you, one scratch and one box, you would probably be able to tell the difference (and I doubt I need to say which one would taste better).

If it's made at home, it's homemade.

If it's of your own mixture (i.e. not out of the box) then it's made from scratch.

I have noticed that a person's preference for cake depends on which type of cake they were raised on. People who are used to scratch cakes tend to prefer scratch while those who eat boxed mixes more often think that scratch cakes are dry. Personally, I'm just happy someone made cake!!!

NO BOX MIX...has to be made from scratch to be homemade.

As a fairly good home baker I would say out of the box is semi-homade and from sctach is homemade. Semi homemade is fine in a pinch or if your are not a good baker but what to give something from your heart. Homemade is for those of us that like to go all out and know there is no ingredients with funny sounding names in the thngs they make. I make most everthing dinners/baking from sratch. I see nothing wrong with brining box cup cakes to a bake sale, pot luck etc. Its the thought that counts. ;)

If we are taking a poll I was raised on box. My DM can't boil water LOL. I still like scratch :thumbsup2
