What is a homemade cake?

They're both right! If it's out of a box, it's homemade. Because it's not from the store bakery. However, if it's made from scratch then I'd call it homemade from scratch. A very important distinction!:laughing:

That's how I always refere to a homemade cake - "homemade from scratch"

because I am allergic to eggs, We make everything from scratch (cookies, cakes, brownies, cupcakes, etc)
It tastes so much better than the boxed stuff anyways.

I always has chemical adn preservative allergies so we make our own icing as well...OMG....after eating homemade icing you can never go back to canned icing again

If I made it myself at home - whether the ingredients were already in a box or compiled separately by me - I consider it homemade.

My grandmother would come back to haunt me if I ever described a cake mix as "homemade." She had VERY strong opinions about cake mixes. :snooty:

I don't mind mixes, but from scratch tastes better and will always be the gold standard of homemade to me.

Scratch. Yellow cake from scratch is only a few measurements away from being as simple as from a box, and you don't get creepy ingredients!

"homemade" to me, means as close to scratch as one can get. So you don't have to grind your own wheat to make flour--but you would start pretty basic and mix the ingredients yourself.

I hate when restaurants call things homemade--if they aren't. The implication behind that phrase indicates you did most everything to create the dish yourself without the use of "instant" anything.

I just wish I could get a good frosting going. I like the canned frostings--but can never get a homemade frosting to the right consistency. I have a friend who is a part-time baker and her frostings are all made from shortening.

I wish i could get similar texture without that ingredient.

Homemade- you made some sort of transformation to ingredients in your house
Scratch- no box

If it's made at home, it's homemade.

If it's of your own mixture (i.e. not out of the box) then it's made from scratch.

I agree with these, and have never heard that if someone used a box then it wasn't homemade until today on the DIS.

Scratch! No box. :)

homemade=made at home
made from scratch=recipe
homebaked=premade, but baked at home
