what is a good raincoat to buy?

If you wore that for more than 5 minutes in an Orlando summer, you would be sweating profusely.

Like with most things, you will have to chose what is more important to you. Do you want something that will keep you the dryest, or something that will do the trick for a 5 minute walk in a sprinkle.

I opt for something light and if rain is in the forecast I usually pack an extra t-shirt if I get drenched.

I would not recommend buying and bringing a raincoat either. To hot and sticky in one to be comfortable while touring.

We don't even bother with ponchos. We try to get into an indoor attraction if we see rain coming. Or we step inside a shop for a while. If you really feel you need something, bring a small compact umbrella instead.

We've used the Columbia light rain coats and the Bass Pro brand rain coats. They pack up pretty small and they dry out pretty quickly. They're not too cheap though.

Large garbage work as well and after you use them, throw them away.

I use a Outdoor Research Helium II

It's lightweight and breathable and worked well while I was at Disney

I can't post a link since this is my first post but it's available on Amazon. Been a lurker for over a year though!! lol

Welcome disneymonkey. I will post a link for you...

Mostly because I was fascinated by this idea for a rain jacket, I looked it up. Sure is pricey but if you use it for all kinds of things, could be worth it.

I have a similar rain jacket, except the brand is Columbia. They're okay, but your lower half gets really wet if the wind is blowing the rain or you're walking. I still recommend just having a poncho. I always buy the ones at Disney, I like to think they're souvenirs.

thank you all! always carry an umbrella for sun and rainprincess:

I absolutely adore my Frog Toggs Rain Gear. It is super lightweight so you don't sweat in it. And, it smushes into a tight little ball so it doesn't take up much room in my pack (or weigh much at all).

I got it for backpacking where every ounce matters, but it has worked fabulously for everything I've thrown at it for almost a decade.

For me, rain pants are almost more important than a rain jacket. I can deal with a wet shirt (don't wear white to a park), but I HATE when my pants are wet. I like that these have ankle zippers so I can pull them on over shoes, and they have fake pockets so I can reach into my real pants pockets.

I use an Adidas rain out designer for runners (I'm not a runner). It's very light and fits very nicely into the small-ish crossbody bag I use for the parks. It was about $80 when I bought it 4-5 years ago.

I saw this on amazon. It looks really long. any recommendations?
ponchos are such a hassle....tiaprincess:

It can be extremely hot at Disney, as it was this weekend. We usually get disposable small ponchos at the Dollar Tree that take up practically no space. This past weekend we also carried very small collapsible umbrellas with us. We used them not only for the rain, but to shield ourselves from the sun as we walked around and also when we waited for the parade. (We had a great spot for the parade with the fast pass plus, but there is no shade in that location.) Of course we put the umbrellas down when the parade started so we didn't block anyone's view. Don't forget a hat and sunscreen when you go, too.

I would think a rain coat would be more of a hassle than a poncho, and likely take up more space.

First trip, we used Dollar Store ponchos. They were sleeveless and if you have hair, they won't stay on your head. Sure they were easy to take on and off and we were fine throwing them out when we were done, but they don't keep you dry.

Second trip, we used Coleman ponchos we found at Big Lots for $5 each. Much better quality, kept us dry, and we just hassled with them for the week and didn't lug them home.

Last trip, we brought similar ponchos to the Coleman ones but had left them in the room when it started to downpour while we were at MK. We bought the Disney ones when we needed them, and surprisingly they were inexpensive and good quality. I think next trip we will wing it and if it starts to rain, we'll buy another Disney one when/if we need it.

That looks terribly uncomfortable to me---like a sweat suit in the Fl humidity and heat. I'm in the "buy a cheapie (lightweight) poncho from the Dollar Store--use it once and pitch it" camp. Lots of air flow and it keeps you reasonably dry. And has a hood.

To all the umbrella toters out their----please, please, please be mindful of my eyes when you sashay by. Umbrellas can be lethal weapons. I'm so not a fan of them in a crowd.:goodvibes

Dollar Store, Wal-Mart, etc. Don't even bother to take it back home. I haven't owned a raincoat since I was 10. :earsboy:

We carry the junk raincoats all prepackaged nice and tight and never use them lol..we simply run for cover!! We will use one to cover the stroller but once the heavy down pour is over and it is just a sprinkle we just deal with it.. It's just a little wetness :)

I wore a lightweight raincoat and rainpants when hiking in Alaska and I was sooooo hot. I can't imagine wearing that in Florida!

We use Ocean State Job Lot $1 ponchos. They have a drawstring hood wich can be helpful in a big downpour. We just toss them out when we're done.

This is what we do. We did ponchos one year. Below knees you are still wet; if it's windy your bum is wet. And they were nasty when indoors. We got some plastic bags to put them in but then the inside got wet when we folded them. We also find the cheap, throwaway kind, rip and just stick to you in the wrong places. As most have said, unless it's fall or winter you will sweat.

We will bring a small collapsable unbrella and/or run for it. If its storming, blowing we will ride it out indoors or replan. When its that bad, the shut rides down anyways. Once we were at epcot when it was constantly raining. Umbrellas worked best for us.

instead of investing in a good raincoat if that is your thing is looking into your shoes... People forget, but nothing is worse than wet shoes and socks.. this is why now, I will put us in quick drying sandles and NO socks.
Important too is having something to keep a light jacket or something dry. Even in late summer heat, we got wet and inside at our ADR we were wet and freezing. the AC killed us in our wet state.
