What happened to Mickey's Wand at Epcot?

I've merged these two threads on the same topic posted at almost the same time!

Freaky!

it looks so much better in its "pure", unembellished condition - all futuristic, uncluttered with signage or oversized arms....

now all they have to do is remove those awful tombstones.... ;)

I just never "got" the giant Epcot sign. Did they think people would get confused about where they were?

Since it was still standing, It had to say SOMETHING.

It was never intended to stay past the point at which it spelled out "2000."

Then, they changed it to read, "2001."

But, as the wand continued to stand there, they changed it to read "Epcot" and that's how it stayed until they removed it.

Did it? I thought it went just to Epcot

I debated with myself about whether it did or not.

I think that it DID, but it's been awhile... so maybe not.

(Not that it matters too much. It was unattractive, regardless.) ;)

Well, I just told DD (who is 14) that the wand is gone, and she's upset! She's only known the wand...she doesn't remember the "pre-wand" days!

Can someone post a couple of nice "before and after" pictures so she can see the difference?

We're heading down there on Friday, so I need to prepare her for it!

Thanks!

I agree that it looks better without the sign, but, to be honest, it really didn't bother me as much as the granite mausoleum in front of it. I kind of liked, in fact, the tie in with the rest of the property. I mean, how many times has it been mentioned that one day they went to Epcot and the next day they went to WDW. Having Mickey's hand displayed connected that park with the others. That is why I really didn't mind. What I did hate were the sparkly stars and "pixie dust" that was randomly scattered on the top of SSE.

I am so glad that they removed that. My memories of Epcot are from before the addition of the sign, and I think that is the way it should be. I do hope someone posts a picture of SSE with the sign off it.

Here it is with the NEW LOOK.

I enjoyed the wand while it was there, but was glad to see it removed. Now if they would only find someplace else to move those granite things ... it reminds me of a cemetary!!!
