What Happened to EPCOT?

I dont know that I agree with you or if you are channeling HS about the closures, but I will support your comment as far as when they (sorry gang soap box time) TURNED NORWAY INTO A FANTASY ELSA AND WHOEVER MEET AND GREET, (off soap box now) they did lower the whole theme of the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow into meh'ville.
Long live the Maelstrom!

The Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow idea died before they even decided to make EPCOT Center a theme park.

We were just there on Thursday night ...we did witness a couple in France Who clearly had been drinking too much and was becoming too friendly shall we say. My husband pointed them out to store cast members and they did call a manager. Two castmembers came over and started a friendly conversation with them and that got them apart. Quite clever and no scene was created.
The drink around the world game is probably a huge factor. That said ....my son and son in law did that on Thursday....but we were with them and they didn't get foolish.....

Food and wine and other drinking events should be done at Disney Springs and not at the parks.. there's to many families there and it not nice to see a bunch of drunks tossing their cookies at the theme parks, just not the place!!! There will more of these type of events as Disney makes a ton of money so why not give it home where there's less kids and doesn't ruin the magic. :headache::headache:

Well sure, except F&W at Disney Springs doesn't help sell boatloads of annual passes. Nor does it make people a captive audience for the night.

I'm sure stressed out parents at the parks are so grateful to be able to order a glass of wine or a pint. Lol

Unfortunately I have experienced this in all its glory. It's not just you and it doesn't seem isolated.

Two years ago, I believe I posted something on this. It bugs me now just like it did then. When we were there two years ago, my hubby's company had their national sales mtg at BC, and we stayed there with him. Our last night there, which happened to be the last wkd of F&W, the drunks-corporate and college aged-were out in full force. It was my first experience seeing it, and I was extremely unhappy. So much so that I have purposefully avoided F&W or Epcot on weekends at that time. In fact, we are going in November and it ends the weekend we arrive. I have planned our day for Epcot after its over. Kind of sad, and it should be handled by Disney. WDW is a place for families, not a bunch of lushes who can't control themselves.

I would have to say I think with about 99% certainty, Walt would not be happy with it. I have no issue with people responsibly having a nice cold drink. I had a lovely Peach Bellini during the F&G in May. But there should be CM training in place and it should be known that Disney does not put up with overindulging. Until they let it be known it will continue. If that's what they want to attract, then I have no words. :sad2:

The profit on alcohol is huge particularly at Disney's prices. I can't imagine that they'd want to do anything to disrupt that revenue stream.

I haven't quite read through the whole thread, but I worry about how many people are driving home from Epcot....

I've been to many Food and Wine Festivals and have never seen "a bunch of drunks tossing their cookies". In fact I can only recall one person who had had too much to drink. One, out of more trips to F&W than I can count. People seem to be making much ado out of not much. And as far as what Walt would have wanted, can we never let that man rest in peace? Walt liked a good drink, so much that he had his own place in Disney Land where he could have an adult beverage. So many people pretend to know what he would want, it is ridiculous. None of us do.

I think you would have more to worry about with drunk drivers if the festival was at Disney Springs. I know for me one of the best things about staying at a Disney resort is not having to worry if I want a glass of wine or two. It is so easy to hop on a bus or boat or monorail. Or even walk back to the resort if you are staying in the Boardwalk area.

Note in the newspaper article quoted that all the statements were the man was "apparently" drunk. He could just as easily have been off his meds, or on some other sort of job. They were guessing it was alcohol, but no blood alcohol content is listed.

Maybe they had other reasons to believe it was alcohol like they asked him if he had been drinking and he said yes.

I don't see a point in denying that alcohol is a big problem in the behavior for some folks in Epcot. They advertise it as one of their long term attractions. If you can imbibe and know your limits then great. If you cant (and many don't) then Disney will eventually be held responsible for serving an obviously inebriated person who ends up running their car into a bus/building/person. Making excuses for a young squid who attacked folks because maybe he was off his medications is silly. He was blind drunk. You cant be on meds that can do that if you are in aviator classes.

I always thought people who complain about alcohol were a bunch of fun suckers. I thought this yesterday as I followed the thread. I apologize.

Last night, I booked Rose and Crown to see Illuminations. I walked out at 845 after they comped my dinner. Thank goodness my kids weren't with me but there were 6 or 7 eight to twelve years old watching what I watched. Several girls In the pub were doing Miley Cryus proud. When a drunk boyfriend admonished them, they began to fondle each other's breasts.

I had drunk five, yes five, drinks over several hours, lest you think I am offended by drink.

The manager who comped our meal made clear nothing would be done about it.

Yes, glad you kids weren't with you. I really don't understand while people would go to Epcot if they wanted to act like that.
