What exactly is school bread?

I've seen different pictures posted and heard the rave reviews and addictions, but I'm still not sure what it is. I will probably try it no matter what's in it though! Is there filling? Is that coconut on top? My DD is allergic to coconut, can you get it without, and is it still good?
TIA

It is like a vanilla custard-filled doughnut. It's really yummy. I was skeptical about the name "school bread" at first, until I went there and realized how familiar it looked.

It does have some coconut shavings on top on its caramel coating/frosting, but you can try asking for one without it. I bet a schoolbread expert here knows. ;)

I am SURE it would still taste good without the coconut topping. IMHO, I think they do that to make it seem more "Norwegian."

it's pure YUMMINESS!!:rotfl: a sweet roll, with coconut and pudding / cream sooo good!

It is yummmy!! It's a round pastry, filled with vanilla custard, dipped in icing/glaze with coconut on top. At the bakery in Norway, with the grass on the roof!!!! :cool1: :cool1:

wow!!! we replied all at the same time...must be craving one of these for dinner!!

Didn't I read on the DIS that the custard is no longer vanilla but caramel? Blech....why ruin a good thing!

oh gosh, I hope it's not caramel... It was superb the way it was!!! Mmmm.... can't wait to get another! :lovestruc

The topping is now caramel under the coconut shavings... the custard is still vanilla inside. In other words, I think it's still yummy!

DW and I tried one of these on our last trip. We didn't like it at all. I have no idea what the fuss was all about. :confused3

I also tried it on my last trip and didn't like it. I had purchased two and couldn't get anyone else in my family to eat it. It got thrown out.

I thought it was like a Boston Cream Doughnut, but instead of chocolate glaze topping, it has caramel glaze with coconut bits topping.

I thought it was boring and too sweet. I much prefer the French pasteries.

I read about the school bread here as well and I had to try. I am probably in the minority here. I did not like it at all. I don't like coconut and I especially did not like the filling.

I'm also quite disappointed that they replace one of the dessert at the Princess Storybook Dining with school bread.

We used to love it but the last 4 trips there is a spice like nutmeg or something in the dough and I dont like it anymore

The school bread was fantastic, but it is a meal !! It is so filling. If you try to make it at home, the recipe does not work the one from Disney. It is laced with problems. Too much yeast, too wet, the custard is too thin, etc. I think someone just posted a bogus recipe for it. I've found another recipe tastes just like it. I made it and the one ingredient Cardamom makes the bread, but can be left out if it's not your thing. have trouble with filling the thing with custard, but normally just make them half the size, serve them in a bowl of custard with the icing/coconut on top. Tastes great. Feel really bad if they now use caramel.
Very much like a donut but baked not fried.
Cardamom has very unique tast, much like a All Spice, which probably be a good substitute if you don't have cardamo.
