Just out of curiosity, I checked to see what a purebred Golden Retriever would cost at a supposedly reputable breeder and was told $1095. I'm just curious as to whether this is typical?

This sounds to be a bit over the top. If you are just buying a "pet" quality dog, I would expect to spend around $300 - $500. The price that you stated, I would expect to be a "show" quality pup!!!!

About 13 years ago, we bought a Doberman from a breeder for $700. I thought even that was a bit much.

We paid $500 for our Golden, but that was 10 yrs. ago. We recently got a miniature long haired dachsund, I think we paid $400 for him.

Are you looking for a puppy? What about a golden retriever rescue?

I was wondering the same thing, cynsaun. Why not a rescue?

Typical can range a great deal.

For example, a good friend who lives in Seattle bought a purbread mini schnauzer from a local Backyard Breeder (As far as I can tell) and paid around 400 (maybe 500)

The very reputable breeder right near my house charges 1000 a puppy (but unfortunatly didn't have any littlers planned when we were looking)

We got Indy from a breeder about 1.5 away who has raised the #1 mini in the country, who happens to be Indy's dad, and we paid 1200.

Well, my friend says she wishes she had done a bit more research, as her guy, while adorible, has some issues she felt would not be the case if she had gone somewhere more reputable.

Another family I know just bought a Malti-Poo from a person who collects litters from BYB and sells them--sort of a puppy store in a private home, but they spent over 1000 bucks. That seemed a little outrageous, as there was no way to verify the puppy's background or how it was raised, but it seems to be working out.

Hopefully no one will flame me for spending so much on an animal, but he was truly worth every penny. He is not only one of the cutest little guys (in my own, obviously, very humble opinion) but his temperment and trainability are a huge factor too!

You can get a purebred Greyhound for next to nothing; they just give them away.

And look at that face:

I think it depends on what breed you are interested in, what their bloodline is, and in what area of the country you are buying from. I'd suspect that a dam and sire that has a long list of accomplishments (trophies/blue ribbons, titles, etc.) would rake in more money.

Here in Virginia I've seen Weimaraners go for as low as $400 and as high as $1,200.

I'll also recommend a rescue league, but you have to be willing to accept a dog that may come with lots of baggage (abuse, separation anxiety, might not do well in a house with kids, other animals or the elderly) and be prepared to deal with it accordingly.

I paid $500 for Tucker in April 2005. He is an Australian Cattle Dog. He is considered 'pet' quality, but on the other hand he is momma's baby. ;)

There are quite a few Golden Retriever rescues in your area. Do a search on google and you can find them.

Somtimes rescues have very young dogs and/or puppies or can put you in contact with someone that does. Rescue dogs are usually fostered and kept in homes--especially pregnant females or pups so it's really best to contact them directly.

We have two goldens that came from a rescue shelter when they were pups. They are the BEST dogs and we didn't have to pay a fortune for them.

Our golden that died last year cost $600 when we got him in 1999. We had to neuter him and not show him. He had clearances on hips, eyes, and heart. Unfortunately I found out that goldens have a much higher rate of cancers than other breeds and he died at age 5. When I contacted his breeder her cost was up to $800. We got a lab mix puppy at a rescue instead. I love goldens, but not enough to pay that kind of money.

We got our golden retriever puppy at Christmas from a breeder - for about $600. I remember the range being from around $300-600. Your quote does seem high to me.

No flames here. I have spent larger sums of money on dogs. But then again, I showed them in conformation and obedience(mostly obedience). I bred, raised, and sold some very nice dogs.

Here was my fav, Luke. In the first pic, he is going over a high jump with a dumbbell. In the second pic he is just hamming it up. He earned his CD, CDX, herding instinct certification, temperment test certification, and was a certified Therapy Dog. May he rest in peace.

We paid $800 for our Toy Fox Terrier. But in the end it was 1,346 for everything! This included crate, food, vitamins, bowl, toys, and first shots.

Xander, our AKC german shepherd is "pet quality" and cost 350. His parents were champions though (he's just mental).

We got our little Cavalier King Charles puppy, Barclay, for half price - $900. They typically sell $1500-2000. :earseek:

I paid $450 for my Bichon. He is pet quality, but I've seen them go as high as $1500. :flower:

As previously stated it depends on the breed. Bulldogs run about $2000.00 in this area, and that is for pet quality. I know of a show quality King Charles that cost $5000.00. Keep in mind these are reputable breeders, not backyard breeders or puppymillers. For a pet quality pug that is from a reputable breeder, in this area, you are looking at around $1500 and higher.

Guilty also...my pomeranian Peaches cost $1200.00..perfect temperment and beautiful. Our lab mix Max came from a shelter..$40.00 donation wonderful dog, also. Both worth every penny! :flower:
