What do you typically pay for a purebred puppy?

It does depend on the breed. My dogs parents both are from Ireland. AKC papers show his breed line . This is sometimes important to be able to trace certain breeds which have problems, heart etc....I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He was $1500 and worth every cent! :cool1:

I would go through a rescue organization -- you can find fairly young pups and slightly older dogs that need a home for nothing or low cost. We got our lab purebred at the pound at 11 mos. old. We love him.

He was free. The invisible fence so I wouldn't go insane was $1,000.

Paid $475 for my Aussie because het was considered pet quality.. a show Aussie was $1200.

Mickey2000, your dog is one handsome little fellow. He is certainly worth what you paid and more! :)

Australian Shepherd? Those are handsome dogs.

There's lots of handsome dogs on this thread alone! Cats are so much simpler to choose. ;)

We have had two purebred goldens. Our first, Butchie, cost $500 in 1990. We lost him to cancer about 4 years ago. We just got our newest golden, Seamus, on June 1st. He is "pet quality" and was $700. Pick of the males in the litter (mostly for hunting trials, his parents are both champions) went for about $2000, females went for $2500. We have to neuter him, can't show him (except obedience), and he came with a 30 month guarrantee for hips/eyes (refund, replacement if you want, but they figured you'd keep the dog and the refund would go for health care). Wonderful breeder in southern Illinois. He's got the greatest disposition- even when he's naughty it's hard to stay mad at him. And, he smiles just like Winn Dixie!

We also have a rescue hound and an old, old lab/pointer cross. The lab/pointer cross was a "birth accident" - their champion lab got into the pen with their champion hunter. Merri Puppy (okay, she was a little hyper as pup) cost a whopping $25! She is 10, has a thyroid condition, diabetes, canine cognitive dysfunction (doggie alzheimer's), is blind and deaf. I'm afraid she's not much longer for this world. The rescue hound, Lilly, came from the humane society- she blew her knee (it came badly broken, she was a horrid abuse case). She has cost us $3000 in medical bills so far- so no real bargain (but we love her and she is so pathetic and needy we just couldn't bear to lose her!)

Here is Seamus (at 14 weeks old and 20 lbs!) with my DS9 (my other "golden") wearing his 4th of July outfit! The smaller picture is Merri on the left and Lilly on the right.

I have been told by greyhound owners that they are LAZY dogs! They just lay around all day and enjoy their new life of luxury =)

They also shed very little. We looked into adopting one, actually!

I've found a hobby breeder near us that sells their pet quality Goldens for $500-600. The parents have all of their health clearances (hip, eye, heart) plus they note the lack of allergy or thyroid problems in their breeding stock. Our 10 yr. old Golden has had allergy problems so this is a biggie for me! This breeder only breeds a few litters a year which also impressed me. We will probably put our name on their list within the next several months.

I have looked into the Golden Rescue organization for our area but they do not adopt dogs to families with children under 5 years of age (we have an almost 3 yr. old). I really think they should adopt dogs out on a case by case basis. Instead I will now go to a breeder for our next Golden which is probably exactly what they don't want people to do :confused3

Val, that pup looks kind of like a Teddy Bear. He's precious.

Greyhounds are lazy?! Yes, I need to do more research. ;)

mickey2000, love the ears! Rusty is just too cute.

txaggiemomof3, I'm surprised that they're so rigid about their ages. We only have a 12 year old child but we do have cats and I wonder if that matters?

Thanks everyone for your input. I have a lot to consider and hopefully we will finally get our much planned dog this year!

My husband paid $1500 for a pure-bred ultra-blonde. Desert Rose is the breeder to the stars and many commercial companies use their dogs as well.
She is a beauty!

Myself, I paid $800 for my cross-breed...a yorkiepoo  She's the best dog I've ever owned (and yes she is SO spoiled :rotfl2: )

Hugs,

RonnieJo :flower: :mickeybar

That's exactly why we got Winston from the shelter instead of a purebred rescue. I really wanted another Shih Tzu, but we are planning to have children in the next 5 years and they won't even consider us.

Planogirl, I don't think all rescues are as strict with that. It irks me though because of all breeds, the Golden is especially suited for families with young children. I can understand not adopting out a dog with an abusive past to a family with younger children but why not adopt out a puppy to a family with a 3 year old?

Feel free to PM me if you want info. on the breeder I found in Louisiana. BTW, I used to live in Richardson and my dh lived in Plano. We haven't been back in ages but we miss it! Take care and good luck on finding your new dog :flower:

In Ontario, Canada most purebreeds are selling for over $1000.

Yep, I have the black Tri color... like a Bernese Mountain dog.

Mickey2000,

too funny, we named our Sheltie puppy Rusty also. Doesn't really go well with Duncan(our first) but my kids find it funny because there are two trains on Thomas that are named Duncan and Rusty. :)

My shi-tzu cost $1,200 two years ago.

And he was worth every penny.

I love that little guy.

I was going to say the same thing about our experience trying to get a rescue German Shepherd with kids in our home. I had my heart set on a 5yr old female with a seizure disorder last year after I lost my own female GSD. But because my children weren't old enough they refused to adopt to us. I practically begged them but they wouldn't budge, despite my lifelong experience with the breed and the fact that my children had lived with 2 GSDs their whole lives. :( We otherwise met all of their requirements and even had our home inspected and passed with flying colors.

Instead we got the pup in my siggie (for $600).

I've offered several times to be a foster family for GS Rescue but again my kids aren't old enough yet. I realize they're being cautious and I respect that, but it seems they're losing out on some good homes with these strict requirements from which they won't budge. It's also something I really want to do so it saddens me that I can't.

Good luck finding your dog. :wizard:
