This was posted onto another board by someone else. I won't tell you who, but I will tell you what they said. It looks like an interesting topic and I thought I'd like to see what you all thought of it.

Someone said:
A mentally disabled woman, who is high functioning enough to live with moderate assistance is captured and raped. She becomes pregnant. She does not have an abortion, because she doesn’t tell her care giver what happened, because that man told her not to. Four-six months later, she is showing. They think its just weight gain. 3.5 months later she breaks water and starts labor. Her caregiver rushes her to the hospital, and she gives birth.

No one knew she was pregnant, no one knew she’d been raped. Yet she still gave birth. Now, all of this could have easily been stopped if her tubes had been tied. She would be sterile, and she would not have became pregnant from the rape.

The mentally disabled are rape material. They have been for years. Its sad, but true. They’re raped by strangers and molested by family members. Its a sad, sad, truth, that most never realize.

Here we come to my point. The severely mentally disabled (suffering from incurable/uncontrollable diseases) should be made sterile. For their own good. They can not defend themselves from such attacks. Then some would never tell their caregivers that they were attacked/hurt.

Some of you may think of me as cruel, but I think I’m a realist. This way, they wouldn’t have to undergo an abortion, which may be as emotionally upsetting as the rape itself.
I look forward to the day where these things are unheard of. I look forward to the world where “rape” isn’t a part of our vocabulary, because “rape” never happens. I look forward to this not being an issue, because no one would do these things. But we don’t live there yet. We live here. And in living here, we must take our precautions.

My view:

I can sorta see what this person is saying, but I believe that that everyone has the right to have (and therefore NOT to have) this sort of treatment. We aren't in the sort of world where everyone absolutly everyone has to take up arms and fight against robbers, theives and rapists just to get on with life. We do have some goodness in the world.

Perhaps the better thing would to give better care. I mean, the care can't be that good if she is able to get pregant without anyone knowing!!!

Unfortunately being made sterile would not stop rape/abuse happening. No one hard and fast rule can be made against all mentally disabled people, they all have individual problems/needs/understanding. It should be the rapists/abusers who should suffer.

Oh wow, i can see this causing many pages of flaming on the other board:confused3 A very tricky situation this, and just because someone is sterile does not prevent them being raped. i agree that better care for the very dependant would be a better solution.

reiterate wow
this will set the cat amonst the pigeons.
i think a lot of people are going to think along the lines of what Wendy and Claire have previously stated. Unfortunately this will not stop rape/abuse

A bit of a catch 22 situation, your damned if you do and your damned if you do'nt

in this day and age I soppose you can tell in early staages of pregnancy when you test the fluids wether or not the babyis going to be ddisabled or not. I take it at this staage the mother would be given the option to abort the feotus. Thus you have killed two birds with one stone. The baby will no longer have to be sterilised and the system will not be as over stretched looking after her.

My opinion is to live and let live. i am great believer that good will overcome evil. On the flip side when people are evil lets not be mamby-pamby and if it is rape of any sort just cut his BITS off. Yes lets whip them off at the root. Just to remind others that we will not tolerate this abuse of our Women

I don't agree with this at all. Far better to put effort and energy into stopping the sex crimes happening in the first place. It doesn't have to be 'sad but true' Better quality care of mentally ill people is desperately needed. Case in point: Bf works for a cab firm and a driver was sent to Whiston hospital to pick up an 88 year old woman who had a severe mental disability and could barely walk and communicate. They expected the driver to take her to the car, drive her home and be paid. He refused the job on the grounds that she very obviously could not cope on her own and from a practical point of view (it is his job after all) he could not see himself getting paid. The receptionist didn't give two hoots and i'm not sure what happened to the woman afterwards, very sad indeed.. This poor woman needed protecting not thrown out into the world like a piece of rubbish.
There is no mention of the fact that pregnancy is not the only risk from rape, STDs are too. There is also the mental scarring which I think would run deep whether the victim became pregnant or not.

I think it's ridculous. If the only reason anybody knows this woman was raped is because of the baby then how is sterilising her going to help her long term? It just means that rape and abuse can continue to go on even longer without the carer's or family been aware.

I'm with Harry in prefering the other method to help prevent anything like this.

I think that's an appalling point of view to have. It's punishing the victim, and not just after they've become the victim, but before, just in case.

No-one would dream of suggesting other vulnerable women who might be "rape fodder" should be sterilised in case they are raped. So why should someone need to be sterilised because they are "mentally disabled"?

I agree with other posters, that we should be putting our efforts into making these people less vulnerable. Sterilisation might stop them getting pregnant but it won't stop them getting attacked. If there is no consequence for the rapist, such as the possibility of a child being born that shares his DNA, then it's hardly likely to discourage him, now is it?

Pokemon Master, I wish I could find the original thread so I could go and post ;)

Abortion is certainly not the answer..the chances are that child is not mentaly disabled, and has been adopted by folk who will give the child all the love and care it deserves....and of course steralisation would not stop the attack happening in the first place.
There is no real answer.

The mentally disabled are rape material. They have been for years. Its sad, but true. They’re raped by strangers and molested by family members. Its a sad, sad, truth, that most never realize.

If this is the truth then as a nation we should be mortified. If these poor individuals are "rape material" (horrid expression!) we should provide a secure safe environment 24/7.

I agree with Harry - well said!
