What do you pay for a babysitter?

We recently had need to get a babysitter for the last three weeks before school starts. We have three children, 11, 9 & 5, with all of them being pretty self-sufficient.

We have a 15-year-old daughter of a friend watching them at our house. Her mother brings her in the morning, and we take her home in the afternoon. Just curious to what others are paying their teenage babysitters.

10 yrs ago (when I was 14) I got a $100 a day for 2 kids. (One was like 8ish and the other maybe 4). I would go over at 8 and stay until 5:30, one day a week for a summer.

It got real old after a while, but it was a great way to save for my WDW trip that we took at the end of that summer

When we have babysitters for an evening out, we pay between $10 and $15 per hour, for two kids.

Our school charges $20 a week for after school care which I think is very reasonable. They get a snack and help with their homework.

I believe all day everyday is about $50-$60 around here.

We paid a lady who worked at our daycare $7 an hour. She seemed happy with it. We're told the going rate in our area is around $7 an hour - from friends who have 2 kids. I figured that since our lady was an actual trained daycare worker with CPR training, etc., that she deserved more than the average.

YIKES glad we live where we do. We pay a base of $3./hour.
If theyve cleaned up after themselves or really done a good job I pay more, usually $5./hour but if theyve left a mess ( food left out from dinner  , toys around the house etc) forget they get $3/hour.

I have one set of sitters that get quite a bit more though. They tag team and one of the cleans ( even MY mess!! :)) and one watches the kids. Theyre a great team! I consider that housekeeping though LOL

Yikes $3????? When I last babysat 10 years ago I made $10/hour for two pretty self-sufficient kids.

I got $3 an hour for two brat kids. It was $4 prior to the parents' divorce...before I quit it was whatever he had in his pocket! I worked for 6 hours and got all of $9. $1.50 an hour!! Not enough...

My boys are 5 and 7. We pay the younger baby-sitters $6 an hour. We pay baby-sitters who can drive $8 an hour.

Ahem.... We pay $10 an hour and we did that before the baby. :teeth:

ok like I said $3 is the base. LOL

Usually I pay more like $5- 6.

My kids are pretty self sufficient though. All the sitters come back so I must be doing ok.

It seems as though everyone is giving an hourly rate yet really you're talking aout a "daycare" situation. Rather than hrly, I'd suggest a flat weekly fee. I'd probably offer $150 per week and include lunch, snacks, and drinks. Regular daycare would probably run you that on just the 5 yr old but it's enough money that most 15 yr olds would be thrilled ($450 for 3 wks is pretty impressive).

If someone is getting $150 per wk to babysit for 40 hours, that is $3.75 per hour. Double that (because you want them on Friday and Saturday nights when they would rather be doing something else) and that is $7.50 per hour.
A kid making $30-$45 a night for keeping an eye on children and watching tv is some decent bank. :)
