What do you miss that we "don't" have anymore?

And Boardman's; Ames; Tops; and another one that started with a "Z" that I can't remember..

Zayres. Bought my wedding dress there. $14.95. (We were married by a JP)

Ovaltine. It's the only way my son will drink milk. I used to go through about a jar a week!

Yes - Zayres!! I would have been thinking about that all night while tossing and turning, trying to go to sleep.. LOL..

dh went last month and will be going again this month to the mystery science theatre 3000 special theatre releases. i could'nt stand the show, but he's loving seeing them on the big screen (last month they did 'reefer madness', and i think this month it's 'house of wax').

That was Rifftrax, which is Not Entirely Unlike Mystery Science Theatre 3000.

Lolas. Did you have them in the States? Triangular freezies. I'm unsure if they were Canadian.

Quik.

Wigwags - these I know are Canadian. Like British Curly Wurly.

Bars in homes. I'm not a huge drinker but I loved looking in the bar. :rotfl2: It fascinated me.

Adult parties in homes. Again, fascinated me. :rotfl: I realize they still happen but not as often as they did with my parents' generation.

Parents in the neighbourhood who could give you crap whenever they thought you were rude. In an instant. Wthout hesitation. I'm sure I hated it then but so miss it now. :goodvibes

Spud. How I loved spud.

Those rolling grocery box lanes. You put your groceries in the box and they rolled it out. Another strange fascination looking down the lane because it saved no time. Laughing.

How important the SEARS catogue was - especialy the Christmas Wishbook.

How movies only came on at certain times of the year. I remember getting together with our friends to watch The Wizard of Oz.

Roller Skates. Inline kills my lower legs. Roller skates didn't. :confused3

Car windows that you crank up and down! These electronic ones cost your first-born to fix!!

What a fun thread C.Ann. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

We've had to repair two now ~ the first one cost $500. at dealer, the second one DH got the part on internet and installed himself for $60!! :thumbsup2

I miss a North American world that just ate and loved food - like many countries still do today. Just eat. (I don't think overeating is loving food). I Nutrition is very important, yes. But this food thinking all the time drives me insane. Just be quiet I say. :lmao:

I've always been a tomboy, but when I had to wear a dress or skirt (as a kid) I liked jumpers and pleated skirts..

Oh - and remember in the 60's - the "empire waist" dresses that were so popular in high school? Made everyone look like they were pregnant..

And for us "old folks" can we have a better selection of coats that at least come down to our butts so that our lower backs aren't so stiffened up from the cold that we can't even walk???????

I think someone needs to start a poll to see how many of us grew up circling items in the wishbooks!

How about patent leather Mary Janes? I wanted them sooo bad when I was little. And saddle oxfords. No one wears those anymore, not even cheerleaders.

And those white knitted ponchos.

Like another PP mentioned, The World of Disney tv show every Sunday night.

Encyclopedia Brown books! Oh, it was a special treat to get a new one. I loved those book so much.

And the books with the 45 records in them. I had quite a few of the Disney ones. You played the record and it would read the pages of the book. When the record chimed, you knew when to turn the book.

And one of my favorite all time toys were the felt people. You know, with the green backboard. I miss those.

Done!!

And wow - I had forgotten about those books, but I had tons of them! I'm sure they were great for my parents, since I could entertain myself with them.

Going way back in the thread, I had also forgotten about Units. I loved that place. (I...um...might still have a skirt and two shirts from there in my closet...:rolleyes1) but I don't miss jellies! They made my feet sweat! :rotfl2:

OMG. I actually have tears in my eyes. How could I have forgotten both of these items. Oh how I spent hours and hours with both. The chime. Oh the chime.

The felt people probably alone saved my mother's sanity. :rotfl2: Hours.

Thank you!

I loved the books with the 45s!!!!! I used to spend hours listening to them. I hated when they skipped! LOL Ah good ol Gemco! I miss that store. I refused to go to Target for the longest time when ours closed. I think I held a grudge against Target for about 5 years. :lmao:

Have you read In Defense of Food? That is more or less the topic (combined why it is healthier to eat as you describe rather than worrying about nutrition all the time). If you haven't read it, I bet you would enjoy it.
Highlights magazine. Loved it. Does it still exist?
Yes it does. My kids have outgrown it now, but we keep subscriptions going for a couple of young friends.

i remember at christmas time the stores sold "snowballs" in the ice cream section. they came in a box, and were basicly a scoop of vanilla ice cream, covered in shredded coconut with a frosting holly leaf and holly berries on the top. i have not seen these in forever.

i remember "highlights" as the magazine you could count on being in every doctor's office (along with "uncle arthurs bedtime stores").

remember the portable record players (came in like a suitcase style box)? we used to pack up our 45's and take them to a friend's house. we saw some for sale last year at cabellas and dd could'nt figure out what they were-i told her they were "old school ipods":rotfl:

colorforms-i remember that these were mom's toy of choice if we were sick in bed (also worked well for long car trips).

I could go all day with this list, I am just glad that at least some of these things are still available someplace!

For me:

Shakeys (always loved this place, some day will have to make a Shakeys pilgrimage!)

Skippers (another restaurant that only exists in a couple of places now)

Bennigans (though they are in Florida!)

Taco Bueno (there is one in Texas that is still open)

Wacky Wafers (Come on Willy Wanka, bring these back!)

The Poppe Shoppe (though they are making some sort of come back in Canada...Mmmmmm Lime Rickey and Cream Soda!)

Razzles...First its a candy...then its a gum! Havent seen this in years

Cup O' Gold...Chocolate, Marshmallo and Coconut...MMMMMM

Green River Soda (hard, hard, hard to find, not like when I was a kid and they had it at the movie theater and ballpark)

Soft Swirl Ice Cream (Loved this so, so Much!)

Vectrex...Greatest Video Game Machine Ever!

Gas for less than 1$
