what do you do when you call the wrong number

I say "I'm sorry, I must have dialed the wrong number" then I call it again to see if I made a mistake in my dialing and if the same person answers I just hang up. Rude, I know.

I am afraid they have caller ID and will know it was me. I usually say (after a long pause) "Sorry, wrong number" and quickly disconnect.

I say "Mom, sorry, I meant to call David", then I hang up on her.

I apologize and say I have the wrong number. Around here if you hang up the person calls back with "You called my number? " so you have to say something.

I always apologize and say I have the wrong number. I know I get annoyed when people just hang up, so I figure I owe it to the person who I mistakenly disturbed to at least give them an apology for bugging them. I guess I'm just over polite.

This is off topic, but I have a funny hangup story. A while back, I was getting a call from a telemarketing company every week or so. It was the one where they tell you they would be sending you about eight magazines for free, but they just ask that you pay x number of dollars for shipping each week (which ends up being more than the cost of the magazines subscription rates). I must have got this call a dozen times, and I was really annoyed by it.

So, one night, I get this call for what seemed like the millionth time, and I start jotting down the costs that are involved in getting all of these "free" magazines. So, I sit there patiently waiting while the guy goes on his 10 minute spiel about the great deal I am getting to get all of these magazines free.

When he finishes, I say, "I just want to make sure I got this right. For $5.40 a week, about $60 a month, $720 a year, I can get all of these magazines for free." I just kept on rambling on and on about the "deal" for several minutes until he finally hung up on me. I never got that call again.

Frankly I'm feeling very judgemental right now about all the people who say they just hang up. Even if it was an accident, you have disturbed these people in their home and owe them an apology. What is this world coming to?

I apologize and then hang up. I've been known to call the wrong family member or friend, though rather than calling the person I meant to call and then I just say "OOps....I didn't mean to call you....I meant to call _______(Fill in the Blank)" and we usually end up talking for a while then.

I'm one of those really apologetic people, I usually say something like, "I'm so sorry, I must have dialed the wrong number. Sorry to disturb you."

I hate it when the caller just hangs up. A quote I heard once says it all "The decline of civilization follows quickly behind the loss of good manners."
