WHAT DO YOU DO TO AFFORD 7+ days at DISNEY??

We save, save, save! Every week we put some money in our DISNEY envelope. We'll have a yard sale, not eat out or go to the movies, etc.

Although we aren't going to WDW this year because our DISNEY money ended up going to remodel our kitchen and DH built DS a basketball court in the side yard. Also, as our kids get older WDW is becoming more expensive with them being considered adults and the ticket prices, etc. I'm not sure if we'll be going yearly after our April 05 vacation.

I would love to be able to go at any given moment, but unfortunately if that DISNEY envelope isn't multiplying there is no way we can go. :(

Our trip last month was the first time that the kids and I had ever been and DH's first trip since 1970 something. We're both in our 40s, DD is 14 and DS is 7. We saved for several years to afford to go and enjoy it and not have to worry about $$ so much. These boards have been a great place to learn about discounts and other special deals.

We won't take the kids out of school so we have to go in the summer when the rates are higher, but we were able to use the 5+2 special. This is what allowed us to stay for a whole week instead of the 5 days we originally planned. We drove from Maryland (15 hours split over 2 days) which cost 1/4 of what flying would have cost us, even with staying overnight in Jacksonville.

While we watched what we spent, we didn't really limit ourselves. The kids had their own money to spend of souvenirs. We didn't go overboard on food. We ate breakfast in the food court most mornings, lunch was usually counter service in the park, and had a nice dinner somewhere.

I envy those of you who are able to go every year. We won't be going back to WDW until 2006 or 2007. We'd like to be able to go again before DS turns 10 and we have to pay for an adult ticket for him. However, since we have to wait so long, it will be that much more special for us.

I drive a 'paid for', beat to heck, 1995, 200K, minivan- much to the shagrin of tween children. They aren't complaining when they are hurdling down Splash Mountain, though.:D

hi

we saved $14000 (for a hol) but my dh was made redundant (out of work for 4 weeks) and we spent it. then as luck would have it i won a competition (ant and decs saturday night take away, those in the uk will know it) to the value of $16000. the lord giveth and the lord taketh away or vise versa.

I agree, I drive a 94 Camry with 97K on it that DS9 absolutely is embarassed is drive in, and DH drives 93 Caddy with 70K on it. But both cars were bought new, taken care of, and are still running great. I figure what we save in NOT having car payments every year can easily pay for a week at Disney.

We are a retired couple, living on a fixed income, but we do not owe any house, car or any other payments. We seldom eat out except for when I do a mystery shop and then we eat for free. We go to the second run movies or rent videos instead of going to first run movies. That saves money and keeps me away from the butter laden popcorn. LOL

This week I saved a bunch by painting the bathroom myself and fixing the garage door.

I have always lived thriftly and continue to do so but it is a fun thing for me, almost a game. I can easily do without some things in order to get DW more often and for longer.

BTW, we could not afford to go at all early in our marriage and are making up for lost time now. Maybe your day will come one of these days? Hopefully, very soon. Better two days than none though.

Best wishes for your next trip and hopefully it will be three or more days.

Me and DW go 2-4 times a year and barely save enought to stay at the Value resorts. And only there 2 nights.

DOUG
so you are basically going a little less than some who go for 4-8 days once a year or 1-2 wks every other year

we live so far away it makes sense to go less often( less travel expense) but longer...except this year we hope to go in Aug., went in jan and another trip "planned " for dec or Jan. at the latest thanks to aps and some business meetings hubby has had in FL this year:)
we split meals and used the vouchers for the first time last trip( got good deals)
we always stayed in fw when the kids were along but have stayed at pop and maybe pofq this time with the ap rate in value season usually.
disney can be all holds barred $$$$$$ but since we have never been in that bracket we go on a budget and still have tons of fun. it doesn't have to be a "trip of the lifetime" every time for me and i can not bring myself to spend over $80 for any hotel anywhere!also have 1996 Saturn and 2002 van as someone mentioned here, no lexus in the driveway!):) !

First of all, you need to buy Florida Residents Seasonal Passes. That will free you up from having to buy any tickets, and you can park hop to your hearts' content.

Once you have the passes, about every month or so, you and DW will look at each other and say, "Hey, hon, let's drive down to Disney!" Then you'll stay 2 nights at an inexpensive hotel and have the time of your life.

Do this once or twice, and the importance of everything else will fade into the background. You'll realize you'd rather go to Disney than, say, buy a new sofa, or pay someone to do your lawn care, or eat out for lunch at work, or whatever.

Don't forget to save your money in a change jar. At the end of each day, throw all your change into it and, for good measure, throw a 10-dollar bill into it (or a 20, or a 5, or whatever you can afford). You'll hardly miss the money, and you'll be able to pay for a frugal hotel and food in Orlando with your savings.

Hi
DH and I go once a year we don't plan to far in advance maybe two months or so. We have always gotten a discounted room at WDW 1st year recieved a postcard went in May stayed at CSR. Last year General Discount went in May All Stars my husband dind't like the value resort I didn't mind it personally I think he missed the slide. This year General Discount and than we got a post card so we saved 100.00 for the seven nights at WL. We have no children and we never pay more than 200.00 a ticket for airfare this year we paid 230.00 for two round trip tickets threw SW. We bought a pass the has 5 day hooper with 4 options we will have tickets left over for next year. We may have to buy one ticket next year just to end up ok. We will probably use 4 days and 2 optioins this stay. This trip cost us 1,715.00 with hoopers and airfare and staying at WL. We will also spend about 1,000.00 while we are there we only eat two meals a day one counter service one sit down or buffet. Some things I don't count into the budget are the pre-paid meals I have I recieved at GC to RFC we have vouchers for 4 meals and have 50.00 visa rewards dollars to use towards meals. We each have 50.00 in DD we are staying at a hotel the night before are flight that was 137.00 a night and we have to get a town car around 110.00. So If I add everything up it is probably around 3,000.00 for a seven nights. If you go do an all enclusive vacation on an Island you would probably spend that and than some of the things aren't actually included.

Like SlightlyGoofy I was unable to go to WDW for many, many years and I am making up for lost time.

With an annual pass and the ability to drive there, the other big expense is lodging. When I want to make a quick, inexpensive trip I use Hotwire or Priceline. I've stayed at the DTD hotels for $35-40 a night and once at the Clarion Maingate for $25. All of the hotels were just fine and were very close to Disney.

I've stayed onsite many, many times and now own DVC, but I'd rather be at an inexpensive offsite hotel than have to stay at home.

Keep reading these threads and you will get a lot of great ideas!
We do a garage sale once a year and all of that $ goes to the "Disney Fund"
I recently opened an ING acct and it's fun to watch that grow (DH says it just goes from one acct to another since I dep $10.00 a wk) but it's a little mind game for me.
We are using the Disney Visa and getting double rewards right now. Will go back to the airline card when that's over and save for free tickets.

What # of stars were you bidding on to get that price? Are those 4 star hotels?

I have $$$ taken out of every paycheck and put in to the credit union for my vacations. I have a very high-stress job and travelling makes it bearable so I don't feel bad about using that money for vacations. I go to Disney in the off season and always manage to book at a discount. I feel that I have earned every little luxury right down to the valet parking!!

The DTD hotels were 3 and 3.5 star hotels - a Doubletree and Sheraton Safari, etc. Can't remember the other one right now. They were very nice - more like a moderate at Disney. So I decided to try a 2.5 star hotel. That's when I got the Clarion Maingate for $25 a night.

I shared that $25 room with a friend so it only cost us $12.50 each. Of course that's the trip that I had to have an emergency appendectomy so I did end up spending a lot of time in the room. The room was huge and very, very clean. The location was good too. We had two queen beds, and we joked that there was room for another two beds.

I haven't read through the thread, so if I repeat any of the answers, I'm sorry!

BF and I are going for 8 nights. Here's the breakdown (all prices are rounded):

Round-trip airline tickets, Chicago to Orlando $200 for one, the second free (free one due to being a travel agent).

Towncar transfers $100. Groceries purchased at free stop on the way to WDW: estimated $50 for water, fruit, pop, snacks.

8 nights Poly lagoon view $1700 (I got a discount for being a TA)

Two 5 day Park Hopper Passes: $500

Meals for whole stay estimated at $1000

Grand total: $3500

Now, I got a great rate due to being a TA at the Polly, but if you purchase Annual Passes, you'd get about the same rate yourself once the AP rates were released. You can also get the 45% off AP rate at the Moderate resorts too, and save even more. The savings on the hotel usually pay for (and then some!) the higher cost of the passes, plus this also takes care of your park admission for this trip, and if you go again within 12 months, your next trip as well. Meals vary depending on how often, how much, and what kind of meals you eat. BF and I like dinning out so a lot of our budget is due to character meals, the Hoop De Doo review, and nice sit down places at the parks. We could do meals for half as much if we really put our minds to it. We could also save money by taking Mears instead of a towncar, but we'd rather pay a bit more for the convienance of not stoping at other hotels on the way, and we get the gorcery stop, which helps save on buying water and pop/snacks in the park.

We pay for this in cash (no putting vacations on credit!) with BF's overtime pay and my bonus money. We make a point never to "live" on extra money like overtime and bonuses, since they can never be counted on for sure. If you can't get overtime at your job, and/or you don't get bonuses, consider getting a second part-time job to pay for the trip, if you schedule permits. Just working weekends at a book store for a few months could either pay for the trip out-right or at least cover a good chunk of it. You can ask for Disney Dollars for X-Mas and birthdays instead of gifts, and cut back in other areas in you daily lives (skip eating out, going to movies, little stuff like that) and put what you save in a "vacation only" savings account or envolope at home.

We also only take 1 week long trip and 1 weekend trip per year, so all of our vacation savings pays for two trips per year.

Edited to add:

Since you live in FL, you can get resident rates. Also consider camping! A one-time investment in camping equipment can give you years of cheap trips (and not just to Disney, either)! Also, consider that your trips are so short, that you are most likely paying for single day admisions to the parks, even if you don't get the FL rates, you could pay for a 4 day PHP for what 3 days single admision would cost!

Yes, there is such a thing as being addicted to WDW! I think everyone here on the boards are. But what I'd do, if I were you, is to cut back to two trips per year, one short and one long. You'll get the maximum use out of annual passes, and you are only six months or less away from a "fix" at any given time (assuming your two trips are evenly spaced). And once a year, you get to play for a week!

Three words --- SAVE SAVE SAVE...

Without preaching too much, it's mostly about wants and needs. We figure out beforehand how much we are going to need for our trip first. Then we save each month, just like paying a bill, and put away $XXX dollars, and do this each and every month, period. Also what make saving money easier is that we try not to spend money foolishly. That is, I drive an older car (1995 w/over 95k miles) not because I have to but because I want to. When friends and family stop by and show me their new cars every few years, and wonder why I haven't purchased a new car like them, I just smile and say 'Why, it still runs, etc". All the while smiling that I don't have a hefty new car payment.

We only have one income in our family, but we always budget and rarely use credit cards. I always try to pay myself first, 401K gets put away each paycheck, and any budgeting $$ necessary to buy certain items gets saved, and then we put away $$ if/when we are going on vacation. Alsways look for bargains, and try not to pay full price...normally discounts for everything can be found you just have to look.

Because of some of the tips from above above, we are fortunate to take a few vacations each and every year (min 2-3 days), and that does not include WDW. Lastly we finally, just became DVC owners so that helps.

If you have not already doing the ING account thing, where they give you money for opening an account and then more money for others that you refer to them, you might want to check it out. It is a great place to stash money that you are saving for a future trip. You could probably pay for your Park tickets for your next trip with your ING earnings.

We're going on our first WDW trip in 7 years. We're going on the 5+2 package and staying at the All Stars. We're flying at no cost, since my DH travels so much for work, we have ff miles. We're fortunate that my paycheck (part time job only) pays the house payment, and whatever's left goes towards whatever; right now it's the Disney trip. I can work more hours as I need/want to, so I can get extra $$ for the trip if need be. We aren't renting a car, no grocery stops, just Disney all the way.

After this trip, I'd like to go every other year for the next several years, if we can afford it. If not, we'll survive.

Now it is a little easier than a few years ago. When we had 4 teenagers it was difficult but we have done many things to be able to go:

1) Twin DS's had a paper route and the whole family helped.

2) Whole family ran a fireworks stand and the profit went to our vacations.

3) DH and I worked at the speedway parking cars for Nascar and other races.

4) We drove, pulled a pop-up camper and camped (Ft. Wilderness is great). That allowed us to take our own food and eat more cheaply.

5) We always carried our own snacks and water bottles in fanny packs or backpacks. We think food sucks in the most money!

6) I worked part time as a CM for Disney Catalog for a couple of years. I loved it and the money went to our Disney trips.

Our whole family thinks it is worth every penny we spend and all of the effort it takes to get there.
