What brand of dog food do you feed your dog?

I have a shih tzu/bichon mix. She has a sensitive stomach although her issue was typically vomiting, but she did have some diarrhea at times. Our vet recommended Royal Canin special which is for sensitive stomachs and that helped a lot. Not a cure-all, but definitely helped.

That's funny, because the dog I'm referring to is our shih tzu/bichin mix too, and our vet had also recommended Royal Canin. Unfortunately her stomach couldn't handle that one at all (and we did follow all the rules for transitioning a food slowly). I did notice this food was specifically recommended for shih tzu a though. Glad it at least worked for yours

OP, out of curiosity, what brand do you currently feed your dog that is causing this issue? My Pomeranian has a sensitive stomach, but we've fed him Eukanuba small bite since he was a puppy. Just within the last few months, he's had small, brief bouts with diarrhea seemingly out of nowhere. Not sure if its from the food but we don't feed him many treats or people food. Also considering changing his brand, but will have to ease him into it.

We feed her Diamond Naturals. Our history with it was that she did excellent on it as a puppy. When she was ready for adult dog food, I asked our vet what he'd recommend for an adult dog food, and he said Royal Canin. We slowly transitioned to that, and she had terrible diarrhea and terrible bad breath that got progressively worse. So we just went with Diamond Naturals adult food at that time, and she was fine, other than intermittent tummy upsets we had attributed to other things (eating rocks in the yard, getting into some food in the kids' room). We adopted a second dog, and put her on the Diamond Naturals too. No issues. Now this spring, we sent them to a lady to board with for five days while on vacation, with a new bag of Diamond Naturals, and they both came home ill (diarrhea and vomiting). We weren't sure if it was stress, the flea and tick/heart worm treatment they'd just had, something they got into there, or what (they both went to the vet, had tests and stool samples, and both were treated but they never really pinpointed a cause).

They both were healthy again after a week, but I swear, ever since that boarding or since that new bag of their regular dog food, neither one of them really formed firm stools again. My one dog isn't having diarrhea, like I said, it's just a bit loose, but the shih tzu mix definitely is, I was up three times last night taking her out in the night. So I feel like maybe they changed the recipe of that dog food (we've bought several new bags of it since that boarding). They both did great on the wet food the vet gave them (Hill's Science diet canned weight control or something like that), but that is prescription only (I just checked at the pet store last night), and plus with wet food they don't get the teeth cleaning they do with dry.

I hope you're able to figure out something for your Pomeranian too!

I totally get what you're saying. It can be confusing. And challenging to find a food your dog(s) like and stay healthy on. There are so many recalls, sometimes from even the "best rated" foods, and lots of stories out there about dogs getting sick. We now have to worry about germs (including in raw), melamine with ingredients from China (especially in treats), pentobarbital (the euthanasia drug), and the latest concern - claims that some of the "grain free" ingredients may be causing cardiomyopathy in dogs. So its a challenge to keep up.

I follow this site as a resource, and get emails when there are product recalls.

Yes, exactly, even the top of the line most expensive food has had recalls! I will check the list to see if the one my dogs are on has had any trouble, thank you

Interesting connection after boarding. Is there mucous in the stool?

Wellness Chicken Weight Control. My golden retriever has had tummy issues from the get go. This seems to really agree with him. Just be careful when switching food. Do it slowly!!! Add a bit of the new to his old food, increasing the amount of new food, lessening the old food, over a week to 10 days.
When he has active tummy issues, he gets canned pumpkin..just plain!!! A scoop of that on top of his food and it really helps.

Thank you, I'm going to give her some canned pumpkin today. I'm also going to try some cooked ground turkey. I had been giving her just rice yesterday to see if that would settle things down, but I just read that the rice goes right through them and the turkey and pumpkin mix is better when they have this situation

I feed our dogs Fromm's. It's made by a local company, but sold in some pet stores and online.
The bichon/shih tsu mix eats their small breed formula.
Our white lab eats the chicken au fromage grain-free formula.

Ours is a shih tzu/bichin mix too, great dogs

I’ll usually feed my pup Blue Buffalo dry food but she gets bored with it after a while. Wet food is Eukanuba and sometimes I’ll get Blue Buffalo.

Orijen and I’ll crumble a quarter of a Primal nugget on top of it.

If my dog gets any table scraps, she’ll throw up or get diarrhea so you may want to look at eliminating people food.

Yes, we are pretty good about not giving her table scraps, but we do occasionally mix in a small amount of plain rice or tiny bites of apple or banana with her food. That's about it for table scraps and it's not all the time, hasn't been recently. She's horrible about eating gross stuff in the yard though. I keep her on leash in the fenced yard but DH recently had both dogs in the fenced yard playing fetch. Our healthy dog was getting the ball, and our ill one was foraging in the grass :/ So that could have caused it too (and yes I think DH will not let her off leash in the yard again, but it's sad she can't even run freely outside, she's not too choosy about what she picks up off the ground)

We fed our Sheltie pumpkin along with his regular food which helped with loose stool. My vet-student daughter (4th year) says regular Alpo has all the nutrition a dog needs.

Our dog has been eating Primal brand raw nuggets for about 5 years. It's pasturized raw meat with fruits and vegetables. He loves it and his coat is so shiny and silky.

Our vet supports this choice and it gets high ratings.

I'm editing to add that we tried boarding our dog twice and both times he came back with intestinal issues. I attributed it to stress but both times we made a visit to the vet just in case.

We now have a vet tech stay at our house when we're away. The dog is happy and it's actually cheaper.

We initially used the shih tzu specific Royal Canin as well, but she didn’t do very well with that so the vet had us switch to one called “Special” but it is made by Royal Canin also. It is supposed to be for small dogs with sensitivities and fussy appetites. I woukdn’t say her appetite is fussy, but definitely sensitive food wise. She has done much better on that, although still does have occasional issues. As others have mentioned, a spoonful of pumpkin mixed in to her food also helps when she has problems. Otherwise we give her no people food. Sometimes the kids try, but I put a stop to that. Oldest DD actually gave her ice cream once. Worst diarrhea ever. Fortunately we were out for the day and DD got stuck cleaning up the mess. She now cautions her sister’s not to share food with the dog.

I buy the “special” on amazon. My local pet stores only carry small bags and I prefer the larger bags as it’s cheaper in the long run.

Also, my dog frequently has issues when we are away. We were gone last week and she came home with diarrhea. It was gone in less than a day. She stays at my sister’s when we travel and seems to love it there so I don’t think it’s nervousness, but who knows? I have usually attributed it to her getting into my sister’s dog’s food. Neither one of the dogs seems to care much about food—both of them are free fed (except when they are together and they are fed separately) and can sometimes go a day or two inbetween meals despite food always being available—but they will go crazy trying to get into one another’s food

Ol' Roy Soft and Moist. Walmart's knockoff of Purina Moist & Meaty. The dog loves it.

DW also feeds the dog some kind of dry food every two or three days, but I'm not sure what it is.

Both dogs get Wellness...Atlas (in my avatar) has a sensitive stomach, so he gets the limited ingredient adult line. He used to eat everything under the sun, but about six months ago, started puking about a half hour after eating, or waking up early in the morning to eat grass and puke. He’s had no reactions since I switched, thankfully.

My other dog ate the adult large breed but he was gaining weight, so I switched him to the adult weight control version. I order from Chewy so it’s a tiny bit cheaper. I used to feed them Blue Buffalo, but Atlas had a reaction (scratching and turning his nose up at it!) so I ended up trying Wellness. So far, so good!
