What book were you required to read in school that you actually ending up liking?

To Kill a Mockingbird, A Separate Peace, Farenheit 451, and Ray Bradbury short stories were my favs. It is interesting how many have mentioned Mockingbird--it is a wonderful book and a great movie too.

I hated to read. That is until I read Jane Eyre. Then I was hooked on historic romances. However, my favorite book that was not required was Gone With the Wind.

You need to read the "Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman" trilogy by Pamela Aidan. It's the story of Pride & Prejudice as seen through Mr. Darcy's point of view and it is wonderful! The first one ends just after the ball at Netherfield, the second one is about Mr. Darcy's time in London (the "lost" time in P & P), and the third one begins with his failed proposal to Elizabeth at Rosings Park and goes to the end. The story is so much better than any other P & P "sequel" I've read since it is basically the same story, just from a different point of view.

And just to clarify....the movie was good, just not AS good as the book.

Try renting the old A&E miniseries with Colin Firth. Very faithful to the book (at 6 hours long!) and an excellent show!

I do want to see this one! Gonna go see if I can find it online right now. Might have to join Netflix or something. lol

Oh, I just remembered....Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury...loved that book!

I just finished the first book in this series and I really enjoyed it. I was thinking if skipping the second book and going right for the third book. Is the second one worth the read?

BTW, if you haven't guessed, Pride and Prejudice was the book I had to read in H.S. that I really did not enjoy at the time but is now one of my all time favorites!

In H.S. I could never understand why Elizabeth Bennett kept being called Eliza then Elizabeth and then sometimes Miss Bennett! LOL! I couldn't follow which character she was talking about!

I haven't read the second one yet, but my mother has. She was worried that she wouldn't like the second one either, because it wasn't exactly from the original story, and it wouldn't have Elizabeth in it. But, she thought it was great. The storyline of what happens to Darcy in London was very good, and of course the whole time he is struggling with his feelings for Elizabeth. She loved it, and now that she's finished with it, I can read it!!!

Ah, I don't want to READ about Mr. Darcy...I want to gaze at him (Colin Firth) in the BBC version!

Well, of course, that would be better!!! But, it's REAL easy to picture him in your head while reading this book!!! Even though I enjoyed the movie, nothing will ever come close to the BBC version. Colin Firth IS and ALWAYS WILL BE Mr. Darcy!!!!

Some of those already mentioned - To Kill a Mockingbird, A Separate Peace, a Ray Bradbury- collection of short stories - can't remember the title, Catcher in the Rye, and one I don't think was mentioned - East of Eden. A great story about two brothers. I remember having to read that over winter break in high school, and I actually couldn't put it down. So many years ago.....

to kill a mockingbird, a separate peace...it looks like we pretty much read the same things. I never knew the power of 'of mice and men' until I saw it onstage in college. the same thing with a streetcar named desire.

I don't read enough anymore.

The absolute best book I have ever read in my life was A Tale of Two Cities I got everyone else in my family to read it after I finished and they love it too! Actually my whole class got really into it and I remember us all trying to guess what would happen next!

I also loved Gone With the Wind, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and Rebecca.
