"Stiff" was great! Interesting and well-written, with a very lightly humorous touch. I've moved on now to "Cold Comfort Farm" by Stella Gibbons.

Right now I'm reading "Bed of Roses" by Nora Roberts. After reading the first book in this series, I was so excited to read this one. I'm enjoying it, but not absolutely loving it like I did the first. Maybe it was my expectations. I just came back from the book store with 5 books, none of them were authors I've read before, but they were all recommended here in this post-Nancy Thayer, Fannie Flagg, E. Hildebrand, etc.

Recently I finished Craig Ferguson's American On Purpose. As a Craig fan, I give it a thumbs up. Not so much about his becomming American, however. Mostly just a good autobiography. Typical celebrity stuff, but written with the CF voice, heart, and intelligence that I so admire.

Also discoved Dennis Lehane. :thumbsup2 I hadn't seen Shutter Island, so I grabbed the book. Plowed through it in a week (which is good for me). So....since I also have never seen Mystic River, I am now reading that. I love that he creates these wonderful, suspensful mysteries and also writes well. I'm not literary genius, but I am kind of snobby about good writing.

I'm reading, Shadow of Your Smile, by Mary Higgins Clark. I like it! :)

I too zipped through the first two books of the Bride Quartet by Nora Roberts. I also liked Vision in White better than Bed of Roses but then I like Mac's character better than Emma's. I would have loved to have a photographer like Mac and even a florist like Emma to have done my wedding 29 years ago. The basics for the next two books set in Bed of Roses. Can't wait to read the next two!

I started The Gathering Storm by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. I didn't even know that Robert Jordan died was dead until I read the Foreword.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with The Gathering Storm. While it might seem like sacrilege, I feel that it is really clear that Sanderson writes better Wheel of Time novels than Jordan ever did.

I'm reading (and listening to) High on Arrival by Mackenzie Phillips. It's a sad tale, but interesting. At work I can listen for a bit, then later pick up the book at home. Mackenzie reads her book and gives a good performance. Probably a good "scared straight" kind of read for tweens & teens that think drug use is cool.

I just put a bunch of books on hold at the library today. Many of these are pre-release, but it's always good to get a head start on that hold list. popcorn::
  • Lost Empire: A Fargo Adventure by Clive Cussler
  • Bad Blood: A Virgil Flowers Novel by John Sanford
  • The Reversal: A Bosch and Haller by Michael Connelly
  • Wicked Appetite: A Diesel Story by Janet Evanovich
  • Painted Ladies: A Spenser Novel by Robert B. Parker
  • Enter Spenser: Early Spenser Trilogy by Robert B. Parker
  • Santa Fe Edge: Ed Eagle by Stuart Woods
  • Strategic Moves: Stone Barrington by Stuart Woods

I finished The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer. I figured that I'd read all the other Twilight books, so I may as well read this one. It's a novella, so it's short. It held my interest, but it's as well written as the Twilight books. ;) My DD is going to read it next before it has to go back to the library.

That's good to hear!

Should finish up Winter Garden by Kristen Hannah today or tomorrow.

Thank you to the person that recommended it. I've really enjoyed it & can't wait to get to the end of the "tale".

For those that enhoyed The Help. I read it when it first came out over a year ago. Recently I bought the CDs and have been listening to them during my commute. They are even more powerful and riveting than the book. Highly recommend them, and I don't usually do books on CD.

I loved The Help.

Probably not too exciting for most here, but I just finished a book called Soccernomics which I really enjoyed.

Now I'm starting on the original, non-fiction, book Gangs of New York that the movie was based on. It was written in the '20s and so far I'm really enjoying learning the truth that the movie glossed over.

Dr. Tatania's Sex Advice to All Creation, by Olivia Judson

It's an absolutely hilarious book, and very educational, too! Here's a sample...

Dear Dr. Tatania,

I'm a queen bee, and I'm worried. All my lovers leave their genitals inside me and then drop dead. Is this normal?

Perplexed in Cloverhill

For your lovers, this is the way the world ends - with a bang, not a whimper. When a male honeybee reaches his climax, he explodes, his genitals ripped from his body with a loud snap. I can see why you find it unnerving.

I'll never look at bees, or dolphins (rapists of the sea), or harlequin-beetle-riding-pseudoscorpions, the same way again. :lmao:

Integrating Differentiated Learning and Understanding by Design: Connecting Content and Kids and Educational Psychology:Reflection for Action. I don't have time to read for enjoyment these days, so I'm reading a few things that are helping me in my college courses.

It is back to reading for Ph.D. courses so right now I am reading The Holocaust: The Fate of European Jewry by Leni Yahil.
One of my classes is an independent study I designed called Ethics in the Holocaust so this is the introductory material for that course.

I don't know if it was my post or not, but I mentioned Winter Garden in this thread. :) I absolutely loved that book! Did you cry? Oh my gosh, I cried and cried.

Edited to not give away anything. Let us know what you think of the ending!

Just finished The Help...loved it! Picked up The Island by Elin Hilderbrand. Just need something light to start off the school year. Won't have much time to concentrate.
