What age would you let yourself "go gray"

I am 38, and underneath the Clairol I am 90% gray. I've been dying my hair since age 25 because of gray.

I was mentioning another need to go to the salon to my 70yo dad, and he said, why don't you just let it go gray???

I'm not ready for that. I know that. But I do tire of going to the salon, and I am lousy at doing it myself. I don't think I'm vain, but I still care about my looks. Just sick of the hair coloring all.the.time.

What age would you/did you allow yourself to go gray? Does it matter if you were a blonde vs brunette? (I was brunette)

I don't know. I am 41 now, 100% grey under the dye, and have been coloring my hair since my 20s, like you.

I am not ready to let it go yet, or likely any time soon. I also don't think it would look at all good growing out, so who knows when I might be (if ever).

I dye my own though--so it is relatively cheap and easy.

I think gray can look great on some people!

There isn't anything wrong with showing your age IMO.

Have you considered just getting highlights?

I am 39 and am going gray at the temples/bangs, as well as other silver hair sprinkled throughout my head (I have very dark hair). I quit coloring a couple years ago.

It isn't worth the time, hassle or money, plus, the color only lasts for a few weeks.

DH thinks it is sexy. ;) Most days I don't, but I don't want to deal with the upkeep, so it stays gray. :)

Been there, done that. But I guess guys don't care as much about grey hairs than women. :)

Probably never. Maybe one day when I'm 70 I'll get one of those lavender rinses.

I will stop coloring my hair shortly after they close the casket lid. My sister has made me promise that she will die "gray-free" even if it means I have to climb into her casket with a bottle of shoe polish. :rotfl:

I have managed to look about a decade younger than I really am, but if my hair went gray I'd age 10-15 years in an instant. I don't dye all my hair, just the roots where my hair parts and by my face. Most of the gray that shows just looks like I have highlighted my hair, due to me being blonde.

I'm a dark brunette who got my first grays at 26. Thirty years later I'm about 1/2 gray. About 10 years ago I dyed my hair for a couple years. I hated the way it made my hair feel and decided for me it wasn't worth it.

My hair started turning grey when I was 16, and by the time I was 22 it would have been completely grey if I didn't dye it. I'm 52 now and I'm still dyeing it, though I recently lightened the shade b/c I'm also losing my hair, so I need to match my skin tone to camoflage it . (Thanks for those genes, Mom & Dad.)

What a lot of people who don't grey young tend not to think about is what kind of grey you naturally have. Some people luck out and get a lovely silver, or even shock-white, but a lot of us are not that lucky. My grey is a rusty gunmetal colour, and it's really awful-looking. If I let it go, I'd still need to color it to a more attractive shade of grey, because the one that I have makes me look like death warmed over.

I went completely white a few years ago and just last month went back to coloring my hair. I am almost 55 and got tired of looking at that old lady every morning. Since I went back to coloring my hair, I can't believe the number of people who have told me I look 10 years younger. Glad I did it!

I am "lucky" in that my grays are silver, not yellowish. It seems the darker the hair, the whiter the grays.

When they pry the Clairol out of my cold, dead, hands.

Actually, I get it professionally done now but you never know what the future holds. I do know it does not hold gray hair for me. :p

I am 40 and don't color my hair and don't really plan to. I have brown hair...or had, but it's going gray pretty quickly. I wanted to go blonde about 4 years ado and went to salon who just did minimal blonde highlights and I didn't like it (was very skunky or zebra-ish). So, that grew out and I am just letting it go au naturale.

I have dyed my hair since I have been 16.

I have a lot of gray but I plan to dye until I am 110.

I will be the old lady with bright red hair!!

I have two friends who are completely gray under their color and another who's beautifully gone gray. If I had her color gray, I would too. Currently, at age 60, I am having mine woven with 3 colors and I do have gray showing at the temples. My hairdresser says I have enough gray to go down to 2 colors now and match the gray with some pretty blondes. I may never go totally gray. My mom did it in her late 50's. I didn't particulary like it. She immediately looked older and sallow.
