Actually both butt cheeks! So DIS doctors (or wanna-be doctors), is it probably sciatica? A few inches above the center of the butt cheeks, my spine really hurts. And my hips (where my legs meet my pelvis). And my legs get kinda numb and tingly. And I have trouble going down stairs (not so much of a problem up stairs, for some reason). Or does the hip involvement probably point to arthritis or a hip replacement? This has been an increasing irritation/pain for about 4 years, off and on (increasingly "on" over the last year). We leave for vacation in 3 days, then when we get back I've promised DH I'll see a doctor. But we don't have a doctor, since our GP moved last year. So where should I go? An orthepedic doctor? Neurosurgeon? Either heat or ice helps a little, and sometimes those icy-hot back patches make me almost pain free for a week or two. But I'm finally looking for more permanent relief. Any advice?

Go see a neurosurgeon. I have the same thing. I injured it doing lunges last yr. Thanks Jillian Micheals.:sad2:

Basically you need to go to physical therapy and a neurosurgeon, since you sound pretty bad. A cortison shot might help with the inflammation.

Then you have to do faithful daily back stretching and exercise to strengthen your back. It TAKES FOREVER to heal. Like a couple of yrs, to get fully healed.

hum, I have lived with this for well over 20 years! No one has been able to help me. You cannot even touch my right backside, it hurts!
But when I am doing better, it is due to a lot of exercise to try to maintain it. and I also do a lot of massage therapy, even thou extremely painful.

I have and do go to a Neurologist and a ortho doctor, for other things also not just this.
so I say try to work with it, do a lot of core strengthening ,and stretching.
I also have been doing some swimming.

I go to a chiropractor for my sciatica. its has helped a ton. Another thing that helps is bending over and touching my toes, it hurts at the time but it seems to relieve the pressure from the pinched spot and it goes away quicker. I also do the ice/heat thing too!

also when I get the pain, I can usually find a spot on my lower back that is warm and sore. I will ice that spot and the pain subsides. I asked my doctor and he said back pain causes weakness in the muscles which can bring on the sciatica.
