What a horrible parent

This is probably the worst thing I ever heard a parent do. Lock your daughter in a dungeon for 24 years, rape her and father 7 kids by her. Sick - just sick. Seriously how do you do that to your own child???

Defense lawyer Rudolf Mayer appealed to the jury to be objective. He insisted Fritzl was "not a monster" and said his client even brought a Christmas tree down to his captives.

"If you just want to have sex, you don't have children," Mayer said. "As a monster, I'd kill all of them downstairs."

So, because he had children with his own daughter through rape, that makes him a loving dad? It makes him not a monster, because a true monster would of just killed them all? WTH??? Is this lawyer for real?

I guess this story was in the news last year but today was the first Iheard of it. Speaking of the laywer how do you even defend this guy? You would need to be pretty sick too.

I just pray for that daughter and her children.

That's not really fair... If the attorney was court ordered then they didn't really have a choice. Because of the legal system someone has to defend him or he can't have a trial and face punishment. Obviously the case is cut and dry here, but the legal defense still has to do their best. If they don't, and it's proven they didn't, it could result in a mistrial.

A book called Secrets in the Cellar by John Glatt just came out that is about this case. It tells the story of how it began, during, and after. Very sick but interesting. It's amazing how some people think.

That father should be taken out and shot. They've got enough evidence, make it a quick speedy trial and then end it. It's much better than he deserves but at least we won't be paying for his butt in jail.

How does something like this even happen? Did his wife not suspect anything all those years? Did she never see him bring groceries to the downstairs "family" or what?

How do you recover from something like that? At least three of the children grew up never having seen sunlight. I can't imagine.

I just don't understand how the family could turn a blind eye to this....he and his wife raised three of these children.

If he's the one I saw on the news, at his trial he is holding a binder in front of his face so that the cameras can't get a glimpse of his face. Does he think he will get out of prison and no one will know what he looks like? He's going to jail for many years so it doesn't matter what he looks like.

This man, in my opinion, is a maniacal demon. His actions are despicable and yet I've seen pictures of him on vacation, laughing and talking to another person. Meanwhile, his daughter and grandchildren are imprisoned.

I don't understand how this happened, how old was she when he locked her up? how could her mom not know she was missing?

I know that the article said that her father told her mom that she ran off to a cult but how in the world do you hold your adult child or late teen child in a prison of sorts and convince her that she should be there? would she know that something was up?

Cheermom1, I'm not understanding the question? The mother apparently thought her daughter had run away, and probably knew she had a reason to run. I'm assuming the rest of the family was as terrified of this man as the daughter was-he probably abused them all in some way. He built the prison under the house, locked his daughter down there (I think she was even chained at 1st?????), then told the mother that she ran away. I don't know how he picked which kids got to see the sunshine, but for those 3 special ones, he took them upstairs and told his wife that their daughter had abandoned each of them on the front steps.
