I have spent the past two weeks speaking about very little else. I work on a nurse advice line and our call volume is off the record because of this. The whole eastern half of the country is affected and it is spreading quickly.

Please, everyone, relax. It is not that serious. West Nile is basically a virus spread by mosquitos. You may or may not have any symptoms. Most people have very mild flu like symptoms. Headache, muscle aches and fever. Some have respiratory symptoms. For those who are elderly or have prior medical conditions it can be more serious. They are at higher risk of complications. Just like any regular flu.

If your headache gets worse, your fever does not go away, you have a stiff neck (can't touch your chin to your chest without terrible pain) you feel weak, have a bad cough, vomiting, diarrhea or just plain feel terrible, go to a doctor or an emergency room. Have some health professional take a look at you. Don't wait. Most of our local serious cases are people who waited longer than they should have.

Many people are panicing at the first sign of a mosquito bite. Not all mosquitos are carrying the virus. It takes 3-10 days for the first symptoms to appear. All this information is from the CDC and local health departments.

If you are ill or just want to ask questions call the local numbers you probably have access to in your paper or on the news. Call your doctor's office and get information or referral numbers there. Be aware of the dangers and act accordingly.

We will make it through this. Watch out for each other and encourage family and friends to take care of themselves. ;)

Thanks for the info RNMom. I was at WDW this past week and we received a warning sheet in our room regarding this. Basically it offered tips on protecting oneself. I guess the Disney Lawyers wanted to cover their butts in case anyone contracts it. Apparently animals at the Animal Kingdom were all vaccinated against it recently.

I was stung by some sort of fly while at WDW this week and just came down with a bad cold. The bite has left a bullseye type of spot on my arm. At least I know it wasn't a tick. Some odd looking type of fly. Certainly did hurt though (and itched) I'm assuming I picked up the cold from the plane. If it gets worse I'll definitely see a doc.

Thanks for the info. My neices husband's uncle was just diagnosed with this a few days ago.

Good info. Thanks.

I learned something interesting about West Nile from a client who is a falconer. The current outbreak is somewhat severe now because the avian population has no resistence to the disease. The primary vector for the disease is mosquitos who fed off birds. West Nile has laid waste to several speicies of birds but the survivors will have some immunity to the disease. As the avian or bird population builds up immunity to West Nile, out breaks and human incidents will go down.

Thank you very much for the info. In Hawaii, we are trying to take a preventive approach and keep WN from getting here. I've been attending meetings on the subject and your post will be added to my file!

Thanks for the info. We have had a number of cases in fairly close proximity to us here in the Chicago area.

Thanks for the info - this is the first time I've actually seen it laid out. I wonder why the news media couldn't print something like you typed??? They keep telling us to avoid mosquitos. Avoiding mosquitos in MN is like trying to avoid dust. Especially this year. I got bit twice while filling the car with gas. Hopefully like everything else this is cyclical and we won't have nearly the problem next year.

Thanks for the info, RNMOM. I have to admit that I've been a bit nervous about it because they've found several cases in Missouri. I just make sure that I put bug spray on my kids when their outside after about 5:00pm.

an 81 year old man in the town next to mine (part of my school district, actually) died of West Nile. we're being extra careful.

This was not only great info it was comforting info. At least it was for me. Thank you so much RNMOM!

People are funny.

How many people died of West Nile virus today?

Now how many died in car accidents?

We should be more concerned with driving carefully.

just found stats for 2000... 115 people died each day in car accidents

just a little fyi, i was curious as to the #

I agree with you. I also heard some startling estimates about the number of people who die each year from the flu.

West Nile is in the news and that is why we are aware of it. We need to take precautions and keep our cool here.
