Well this month has been a total bummer so far..advice needed lol..

I swear sometimes you have to keep a sick sense of humor or you are going to go freakin insane.

So far this month I have had to go on maternity leave early so no more paychecks until I recover from my csection scheduled on 1/25...DH is out of a job since the company he worked for JUST went out of business w/ no warning...I have a crazy ex to deal with lol....Holly had severe tonsillitus last Sat and is just getting over it...we got our elec bill and while I know a 200.00 bill isn't bad with what some are paying it is bad for us lol (wth is up with Fl weather and please let our current warm front last!!)...and guess what I woke up to this morning?????

Give up?? A child covered in red spots...no fever or anything, just masses of red spots head to toe...I just got home from urgent care (my kids NEVER gets sick on days the ped is open I swear) and even though I was pleading with God that it was an allergic reaction to SOMETHING..well guess who has the CHICKEN POX? Holly of course lol...nope no allergy for us, its the dreaded pox.

Of course DH and I have had it as kids so we're good...but since I am 9mos preggo and due for my csection in EIGHT days I can't be around her...and neither can Remy since she hasn't had it. I have to call her school Tues to let them know so they can keep an eye out on the other kids..we haven't been anywhere else so I am sure its from there lol...Sigh...the doc said she SHOULD be done with it by the time I get out of the hospital...the girls were supposed to go to the hospital with my inlaws while I was in surgery on the 25th so they could see the baby but now I don't know if they should. Darn it!!!

Anyways, any advice on how to make her comfortable, etc? I had this when I was little so I don't remember much lol..

 I'm so sorry...hopefully you are getting all your bad karma sorted out now, and you will be blessed with a perfect baby who sleeps through the night from the day she gets home ;)

Sorry to hear that your little one has the chickenpox. Especially at such an inconvenient time.

No advice, except that if I were you, I'd ask my doctors how to handle the contagious issue. I really think Remy is probably already exposed, and you should expect her to get it in a few weeks. How that effects you and the baby, I don't know, so talk to your docs about it.

Good luck with everything! :)

Oh wow! When it rains, it pours! Here's hoping things settle down for you soon.

As for the chicken pox, the best you can do is treat the symptoms to make her feel more comfortable - Tylenol for fever (if she has one), Calamine lotion on the really itchy spots and Aveeno (or similar anti-itch) baths. I hope your other daughter doesn't get it too, but a lot of these illnesses are stealthy and most contagious before symptoms appear. And definitely call the school, as you said. In our state, they're required to send out an exposure notice to every child who might be affected.

Good luck and hang in there! Just think, you have a beautiful new baby to look forward to!:)

My suggestion would be to take her back to her regular doc for a 2nd opinion. Just to be 100% sure it's not scarlet fever. With the tonsilitis (Never could spell that) earlier and now a rash, that would make me wonder if her tonsil problems weren't Strep related and now it's moved on to scarlet fever.

Strep is also dangerous for you right now and I'd want that ruled of for certain.

I know scarlet fever and chicken pox look different, but keep in mind that unless you have an older Dr., MANY have not seen a full blown case of chicken pox. It's much easier to mis-diagnose now that most of our kiddos have had the vaccine. (FWIW, DS never had a fever with scarlett fever...we also didn't know he had strep until he had the rash...)

Sorry you're going through this and good luck withthe new baby. (And the 25th is a GREAT day to have aq baby. It's my DDs Birthday! Hope your delivery is as smooth as mine was for her! )

Well if it is chicken pox, your DD should be feeling better in about a week. Which would be just in time for your delivery. If you are planning on breastfeeding that should definitely help with keeping the baby immune. (My Grandfather had TB when my aunt was born and my grandmother nursed her and she stayed healthy).

As for treating symptoms, take it from someone who had Chicken Pox TWICE (yeah I'm weird)... Calamine lotion and baking soda baths. That's about all you can do. Poor kiddo.

Calamine lotion and Aveeno baths. Sorry you are going through this now!

I had chicken pox as an adult and the only thing that helped a little was Aveeno baths. It makes a mess but it's so soothing.

You poor thing, enough is enough!

no advice, with all the lol's it sounds like you are keeping your sense of humor.

When people here say Aveeno, keep in mind they are talking about the non-colloidal oatmeal baths, and not just the soap.

You'll want some neo or poly sporin around in case she scratches the top off some of the pox. It will keep down spread of infection. The last thing you need is impentigo joining the fun.

Calamine lotion is now no longer recommended. It dries on the skin, cracks and generally makes the child itchier. Check with the doctor on some sort of Benadryl type of preparation (not necessarily by mouth).

If she gets any pox in her mouth, be ready to have some very mild foods for her to eat, not cold and not hot.

My son (4 at the time) had chicken pox when my daughter was born. Both my sons couldn't visit me in the hospital. I had a c-section so I was there for 4 days. It was hugely disappointing. My husband would videotape my daughter and show it to the boys at home. Two weeks later my second son got the chicken pox and two weeks after that, my daughter got them. She didn't have many spots thankfully.

And beware, they CAN have both! My dd's were 9 and 2. They both came down with the pox. A week earlier they had an upper respitory thing and then came down with chicken pox. I kinda was thinking it was all related. They both had extremely high fevers and on the third day I took them to the emergancy room. I was 8 months pregnant with ds at the time. Sure enough, both of them had both scarlet fever and pox and spent the next 4 days in the hospital.

Just keep a good eye out and if there is any rash or sustained high fever, call the dr ASAP. My dr said it was fine for me to care for them with the Chicken Pox but I had to be way more careful with the rest.

i had chicken pox as a young infant as well. the doctor told my mom not to stress over me getting them from my 6 year old brother- "natural immunities still in-tact...breastfeeding provides additional immunities...", but at just shy of 3 months of age i came down with them. mom does say that while i was cranky i was allot easier to deal with than my brother because i did'nt have the co-ordination to be able to scratch:rotfl:

op, more than likely the other child will catch it (both my kids were immunized, one caught a light case and a week later her brother came down with it) so be prepared. one thing i would suggest is finding out if your in-laws or any older adults who might be watching the kids have ever had shingles. both my pediatrician and mom mom's md made her steer clear of my kids during their pox period b/c they said since she'd had shingles before, exposure to chicken pox could cause a new episode to flare up.

Did your girls have the vaccine? the booster? If so, maybe your other daughter won't get them. Otherwise I imagine she has already been exposed.

yup, we were told the same thing about chickenpox as we were about swine flu-by the time you start seeing the symptoms the kids have been coming down with it enough to have exposed the other family members. in both cases with us it was true-like clockwork, one showed symptoms and a few days to a week later just as that one was starting to feel on the mend the other one came down with it.

:hug:I am sorry about all that is going on in your household...be sure to ask your DD teachers for all the work so she doesn't behind....

As others have suggested, try to keep her comfortable with Aveeno and Calamine Lotion.

Also keep an eye on the others that have been around her. You're contagious 1-2 days before the rash appears so it's possible that others have been exposed.

My children were exposed to them Christmas of '94. The two oldest girls came down with them about 2 weeks later. My youngest was only 5 1/2 months old. She didn't get them from the first exposure but did end up with them the end of Jan-early Feb from being exposed to her sisters. Of course, this was before the vaccines was available.

Hang in there!

I'm so sorry you are on early bed rest. What an awful time for the girls to get chicken pox too. Hopefully things will get better. Maybe it's time to encourage your DH to go get a job bussing (or waiting on) tables, or at McDonalds, or something. I know it's not probaby what he sees himself doing for long, but you need a paycheck coming in. You need a break from some of your stress and extra income would help that a little.
