Disney worker deported to Haiti for massacre
Friday, January 16, 2004 Posted: 5:32 PM EST (2232 GMT)

MIAMI, Florida (Reuters) -- A former Haitian military chief who worked on tourist boats at Florida's Disney World for five years was arrested for deportation to Haiti, where he is wanted for murder, U.S. authorities said Thursday.

Jean-Claude Duperval was assistant commander in chief of the Haitian army during the bloody military dictatorship of the early 1990s.

He was convicted in absentia of murder in November 2000 and sentenced to life in prison for his role in one of Haiti's most notorious massacres.

"The arrest is a historic victory for those fighting for justice in Haiti and for the effort to ensure that the U.S. is not a safe haven for human rights violators," said Brian Concannon, a U.S. lawyer who prosecuted those accused in the massacre for the Haitian government.

The U.S. Immigration Board of Appeals denied Duperval's final appeal on January 7, allowing immigration officials to deport him. He was arrested at his Orlando home Wednesday and was being held in the Orange County Jail.

"He will probably be deported immediately," said Pam McCullough, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Tampa.

Concannon said Duperval is the highest ranking of four high command members arrested in Florida in the last few years. Two have been returned to Haiti.

Duperval was convicted in an April 1994 rampage by soldiers and paramilitaries through the seaside slum of Raboteau in the city of Gonaives. About 25 men, women and children were killed.

Human rights groups estimate that 3,000 people were killed in the three years the military ruled Haiti, from the ouster of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1991 to his restoration by a U.S.-led military intervention force in 1994.

Duperval worked in the watercraft division at Disney World in central Florida from 1997 to 2002, said Rena Langley, a spokeswoman for the tourist attraction.

"He was considered a good employee," she said. "We had no knowledge of his background while he was here."

She declined to say if Duperval resigned or was dismissed.

"So you just brutally killed 3000 people in Haiti, now what are you going to do"?

"I'm going to work for Disney World"!

I'd like to have seen this guys interview:

"I worked as the assistant commander in chief of the Haitian army, now I'd like to boat around tourists. I PROMISE I won't kill anyone."

Mr. Crickett, you're bad.....but I'm still laughing!;)

Hmmm. So that's why that one time my JC skipper pulled out a real gun and starting shooting at the natives!

I remember the criticism Disney received a while back for not screening employees. This takes the cake.

But at least now Michael Eisner can honestly claim is his not the worst person employeed by The Walt Disney Company.

Watercraft division?

What were they thinking?

This guy obviously belonged over at Alien Encounter.

3,000!!:earseek:

I thought it was only 999 Haunts!

I'm sorry. In my post I was making fun of my school (IS51). They always have fights and really bazare things happen everyday. Sory I didn't mean like killing anyone.

I guess that's why Eisner kept him around.
Heck, if I'm Eisner and being threatened with a coup d'etat, I'd want the Haitian army behind me too to hold off the angry cast members.

It really is despicable that a cat as bad as this one managed to get through the screening process.

Assistant CIC of the Haitian army AND a mass murderer? I realize the guy left it off of his resume, but that's a damn big thing to miss!

Not that it's even remotely similar, but it is an example of the screening and organization and such at the parks...
I worked for the College Program but left early, and when I decided to quit I was told that I would be blacklisted from Disney, that I never be able to get an entertainment related job anywhere ever again, etc. Lots of very angry, definite sounding threats from both the CP representatives and my managers ( I guess they wouldn't have anyone left to cook the french fries?) However, after quitting officially on December 14th, I got a letter after what would have been my graduation date (January 11th) informing me that they were going to have to terminate me for not showing up to work for the last month. Hm, I thought most people stopped showing up for work after quitting? My mistake.
The very next day after recieving the "you're fired" letter, I started getting letters etc asking me to come to the College Program recruitment events to share my, "Magical Memories" and to interview for an advanced internship. Hmmm...I have some realllly magical memories to share with those poor unsuspecting kids...*lol*

Casey,

Could you please explain the College Program? I'm not familiar with it. I'd like to understand more why they threatened you for leaving. Thanks.
