Monday, April 5: Frog-Sized Margarita
Once I finished internally debating a career change, I quickly hurried on outside through the automatic doors because I heard a sound I was hoping to hear in real life! The JAMMitors were playing! Well, they weren't the JAMMitors because it was during the Flower and Garden Festival. Instead, they were called the Jammin' Gardeners or something like that.
We actually only caught the end of their show, but I was glad to have caught them at all! They really are an entertaining bunch! I'm especially amazed at their skill because they all stay on the beat and obviously have great rhythm.
I've tried playing the drums once or twice since I've been on many different worship teams at church. One particular time was with my cousins. We would go to my grandparents' basement because they had everything set up down there (guitars, keyboard, drums). My cousin Danielle was our drummer, and she was trying to teach me a basic beat. Okay, it took a while to get my hands coordinated to hit the sticks correctly. However, once she tried having me add my feet, it was impossible! I was the most spastic person ever! Guess the actual drumming took too much concentration because I've never had a problem tapping my foot when I was in the school band playing the flute. God just did not create me to be a percussionist!
These guys, however, were definitely talented! Plus, it's not just hitting things to the beat. They each focus on a particular "instrument" to create a particular sound that just works with the other two. Oh, and on top of that, they're funny! They're just wacky and sometimes tell jokes. You can really tell that they love their jobs!
The only disappointing part of the performance was that they didn't give out stickers at the end! Haha, I know, I'm supposed to act like a 25-year old, right? I've seen on TRs that the JAMMitors give out Junior JAMMitor stickers or something like that. I wanted to get one afterwards, but obviously, being an entirely different group meant that that wasn't going to happen. Oh well, there's always next time!
We headed to the other Innoventions building because there was another thing I knew I really wanted to do. Before we headed inside, Weird got a pic of Pumbaa! Are you achin' for some bacon?
He also really loved these giraffes because the pose made it look as if they were actually moving forward!
Inside this building, there was this little model. Don't know what it was for, but as I've mentioned before, Weird went to school for architecture, so he's immediately drawn to all sorts of buildings and models!
A little conference room!
A little science lab! And the periodic table of elements too!
I wish I could have tried everything in Innoventions, but that'd require a separate day! I wasn't quite sure where I was going since we never really explored Innoventions before, at least not any time recently. Soon I started seeing signs. What I really wanted to do wasn't The Great Piggy Bank Adventure, so we kept moving on until we reached the section dedicated to velcro!
Next time, cute pig. Next time, we will partake in your adventure!
This sign was one that I just had to photograph because it said "hook and loop" on it. In preparation for the New York State verbal exam for the 8th grade, I do this practice listening session (I read a story twice, students take notes and then answer questions and write an essay) called "Hook and Loop," which is about the guy who created Velcro - George de Mestral. Yes, I have that memorized at this point, haha.
For those of you who are interested, the reason why he thought to invent it was because he went out for a walk with his dog in a woodsy area and returned to see a ton of burrs stuck to his dog's hair. He tried brushing them off, but it wasn't that easy. He took a burr into the lab to examine under a microscope and saw that it was made up of what looked like tiny hooks. He realized that nature (haha, or God!) had created the perfect fastener!
Of course, most people won't think much of it because everyone says Velcro (combination of the words velour and crochet), but a few days ago when I was at the dentist's office, I saw a commercial for Pillow Pals. You may have seen the commercials or at stores (we have a stand in the mall that sells them). It's basically a stuffed animal that unhooks to become a pillow. Well, in the commercial the guy says to undo the "hook and loop." Haha, he's talking about velcro!
Seriously, I'm just going to keep going on and on about Velcro ...
Well, we rounded the corner and I saw what I was searching for ... the area to make your own velcro frog! I think this is so cute because it's a free activity that might not be as thrilling as Test Track or Mission: Space, but it draws out the inner kid in everyone! Mom, Matt, Weird, and I all chose our frog so we could start picking accessories.
Oh, where was my dad you ask? He was sitting on one of the sofas on the other side of the building with my mom's backpack taking a nap. That worked for us! He could rest, and if he was closing his eyes, he wouldn't realize how long we were away!
There were so many pieces on the spinny rack things that I could not identify. I wonder if they were supposed to be certain things or if they purposely made them unrecognizable so that you could use your imagination and decide what to use it for! Haha, that's what I ended up doing!
I actually started off with a green frog. You have your choice of green or purple. However, as I started looking for accessories, I realized that a lot of the things I wanted were green! I started removing the few pieces I stuck on so I could switch it, but then my mom switched with me. She wasn't enjoying it that much because she felt out of place. She said she didn't think that she could/should be making one because she wasn't a kid. I told her, "Weird and I aren't kids either, but here we can be!" Okay, I most likely made that quotation up, but it was something to that effect.
The one thing I KNEW I wanted without a doubt was Mickey ears! That's really the only thing there that's distinctly Disney. Even that can probably be used in some other imaginative way as well!
Here is the one place that I remembered to look up! I loved how they showed the uses of velcro in the mobiles.
Want to know why the astronauts are up there? Astronauts have a little strip of velcro inside their helmets so that when they have an itch, they can just rub against the strip to scratch it. They obviously can't use their hands, so that provides some relief! And yes, I learned that from the story I read out loud to the kids! Can you tell it's one of my favorite informational texts? It's much more interesting than the one about the guy who fixes all the clocks in the palace at Versailles (the 8th grade listening passages are mainly informational texts, the 6th grade has the fun short story ones!).
Love how they decorated pretty much every space that could possibly be decorated.
This was also my favorite. What does it look like to you? Most of you probably see a baby with a diaper on and a bib. It took me a while to see it (and I mentioned it to Weird too!) that to me, I thought they were representing super babies! You know, a baby wearing a diaper and a cape because he/she is a superhero!
The only bad thing about this area at that time was that there were 2 CMs replenishing the spinny racks with more velcro pieces. They just seemed very unhappy with their job. It was an older man and an older woman who didn't talk to anyone or smile to anyone. Maybe they wanted to work at a different station? Maybe the frog velcro station requires a lot of organizing or clean up because people don't put the pieces back? Whatever it was, I just wanted to be like, "You work in Disney! Smile a little!" (I think that's why my mom felt a little uncomfortable.)
Finally, I present to you my frog! My frog was definitely ready to have some fun on vacation! What's in her hands? On one side, she has a cup that's holding a margarita! Virgin, of course. This little froggy knows how to have fun without alcohol. In her other hand is a tortilla chip. Feeling the vibe of the Mexico pavilion!
Woohoo for actually being able to experience something I wanted to do! I think I wrote about it in my PTR, so I was extra excited. On the tops of the spinny racks there were rolls of blue velcro so that you could attach it to the back of your frog and wear it as a bracelet or attach it to your bag. We got those and then were on our way! Hmm, there isn't a pic of the other frogs that my mom, Matt, and Weird made! I wonder if we ever took one later on. Guess we'll find out as I continue this TR!
But where were we heading next? We still wanted to do more in Innoventions; we knew we weren't done there yet!
