I am also 13 and I don't think anyone our age should be going on any strict diets. I think just use common sense. Get active in something physical. Even if it is just walking each day. And stay away from junk fatty foods as much as possible.

Try Weight watchers. It really works! My daughter was overweight at 16 and she lost 20 pounds on weight watchers. It did not even take that long. I also think the program allows you to eat normal foods and still loose weight. Good Luck.

You're perfectly fine, just the way you are.

1. portion control.

2. when you feel hungry, first drink some water. if you're still hungry ten minutes later, eat. sometimes your stomach needs liquid, not food.

3. exercise on a regular basis. about thirty minutes three times a week is good. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DO ANY SERIOUS WEIGHT LIFTING. (by serious I mean anything more than 10 pounds) you're not old enough, and you're not trained. you can hurt yourself trying to lift weights. you could break your growth plates.

4. drink lots and lots of water. I can promise you that you do not drink enough.

5. cut out sodas and sugar. You'll loose like ten pounds just from doing that.

6. set small, reasonable goals. like 10 pounds a month. if you don't meet your goal one month, don't be hard on yourself. its absolutely normal to hit plateaus. just keep up what you're doing. the weight will come off.

7. count calories. about 1500 a day is more than enough. Do not go under 1200, though.

8. have an overall goal. Like you want to get down to ____ weight.

9. cut out white breads and pastas. eat only wheat breads. its much healthier.

10. reward yourself. you can cheat every now and again. its okay. just don't make it a regular thing.

hope that helps. PM me if you need any help.

Just adding something...

Eat stuff with fibre in it. It'll help digest your complex carbs a lot faster.

Don't diet.
You need to remember 2 things.

1.You are still growing, and what is there now could not be there next year.
2.Muscle weighs more than fat.

If you are really overweight, need to lose weight, and are 13, you need to talk to a doctor. Do try getting some exercise, eating less junk food, and such, but don't try any dieting without going to your doctor.

to be honest i would go and see a professional. If you are that self consious about ur weight, then go see a doctor. He can advise you on how much to loose, and how, as well as checking in on ur weight to see if anything weird happens. They want you to be as fit and healthy a possible, so they will help you!

I agree Sonya.

When i was in fourth grade i was overweight and all i did was just keep dancing and energy high and if i felt like taking a rest i did. I didnt overwork myself and i continued being myself hoping that someday this will be all be gone. And eventually i dont know what happened but i lost that weight my body decided "Ok i have put enough punishment on her might as well cut her some slack":lmao: ok well..thats not really what happened but I did lose that weight
WITHOUT DIETS

If your a kind of person who cant keep away from junk food
TRY to substitute if for fruits cheeses and veggies. With a little imagination they can be very delcious after school.

If you really want to do something, do weight watchers. Find a place where they hold meetings, they have teen meetings. I used to go but I got lazy and always had something on the weekends.

If you have sports at your school definatly go and try-out. I feel so more fit from field hockey, and getting out and doing something everyday.

Good Luck to you.:thumbsup2

I agree. It's much healthier if you consult a doctor or nutritionist. And they'll help you change your eating/exercise habits for good. Sometimes if people diet alone, then once they reach their goal, they'll go back to eating the way they used to, then the weight comes back. It might be expensive, but if it's something you really want to do, talk to your parents about it.

If you're hungry, drink a cold glass of water at once. Sometimes your body doesn't know if it's hungry or thirsty, so anything will do.
I would ask your regular doctor to recommend a healthy diet for you if you really want to lose weight. It's all about moderation, what to eat, and excersise.

Excersize, eat healthy, play sports or something outside, avoid overeating, and DO NOT CUT SWEETS OUT ALTOGETHER. If you're eating alot, just don't eat them as often, and replace the amount of sweets that you cut out with fruit and stuff, but don't overeat. And remember, you are still growing (like Sonya said).

my mom lost 44 pounds on weight watchers. i am really proud of her. weight watchers really works and you get to have good food and stuff. and when your at mcdonalds or something get a salad and a small fry instead of a burger and fries. the salads at mcdonalds and wendys are actually really good.

I agree with the previous points made about how you're still growing. You do need to remember that. When you're about 12-13, your body goes through massive changes and sometimes extra weight is needed for those to happen. That's how it was for me.

Also, muscle does, indeed, weigh more than fat. I had a rigorous training regimine this past summer and I gained 10 pounds. But guess what? I lost 15 pounds of fat and dropped a pants size. I am overweight by traditional standards (I weigh 160lbs even and I'm pround of it), but a lot of my body composition is muscle.

When you exercise, start slow. Warm up well. Stretch for 30 seconds each body part. You should spend about 7-8 minutes stretching. Go for a run beforehand- it warms you muscles and makes them easier to stretch. Do some lightweight squats, jumping jacks, crunches, pilates, yoga, push ups, whatever, just keep yourself active. A diet will do you no good if you don't exercise. Don't lift more than 10 pounds (like Shelby said) if you haven't been trained. You can seriously hurt yourself and that is so not fun.

For food, cut out white bread and replace it with wheat. It doesn't necissarily have to be whole grain, just wheat is a good start. Don't eat pasta in excess, if you're planning on having a major workout/active day, eat a plate the night before/the morning of- it's good energy, but don't eat too much because it will only be stored for later. Try not to drink soda, or if you do at least keep it to diet/zero calorie sodas. This will help immensely. Try not to eat sweets, too. This will be hard with Hallow's Eve coming up, but try. Energy/protein bars will become your best friend. Luna Bars were the love of my life over the summer. Fruit Leather is also a really healthy, really yummy snack.

That's about all I've got. I will reccomend seeing a diatrician/nutritionist instead of taking the word of the TB as law, use us as guidelines, but see a professional if you're totally serious about losing weight. It will help a lot if you have a group of people to cheer you on, too.

Substitute any soda for water. I haven't had a Coke in months. I thought it would be hard....but it isn't.
