weapon detection at WDW

Someone mentioned bottlenecks and I just wanted to mention that if you don't have a bag there usually isn't one. They have special gates for those without bags and people just stroll in.

That's not to say that someone isn't watching them walk in of course.

Without a bag you are bottlenecked through one point. There is not a back up there but it is one central point that can be focused on.

I hate those things.. are they really banned from the parks? If they are, well then yeah, security needs to start enforcing that policy a little better

They are the worst! They are banned but if you were to be walking on them at through the gates they could go unnoticed for a while. Then you have the issue of, yes they are not allowed, but how do you tell a family they have to leave or buy new shoes?

There is another threat regarding security, which you may find interesting. Well, some posts are interesting, and some not so much:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2465936&highlight=security

Hopefully this link worked.

I know for a fact that they have some highly trained security that we may never see, nor should we. They are everywhere that you cannot see. Some people think that because it is not visible to the naked eye, that it does not exist. With regard to security, I am sure that everything Disney does has a reason, it may not be readily apparent to us. Bag checks are a necessary evil, whether we agree that they work or that they don't. I've been to Disney more than 15 times, and I've never stood in the bag check line for more than 5 minutes. Whether they do a good job or not, it's not a big deal to me. I've spent almost 20 years in law enforcement, and trust me, they have people up the wazoo watching us at all times for our movements and behaviors. People get stopped by "security" all the time, they just don't want you to see it. And you usually don't...;)
Oh I agree, a good under cover officer never lets his cover slip out. I just wondered about the terrorist training for the majority of those that do walk the parks.. I am sure there are those that "watch" the parks from a far.. but the majority of those walking, I would think, are there for shoplifting and intoxicated adults, fights etc... which we all know does happen there. Not spoken about much but happens...

For Disney, that is easy to "sell" them new shoes :rotfl: but on a serious side, don't most of them come with wheels that can pop out. I know at school when we would catch a student, we had them pop their wheels out and put them in their backpacks.. now I am sure, if a parent were to have to do that, once out of site of security, some will just hand the wheels back to their child..

You can sneak a bomb in very easy.. in your shoe. Just as that terrorist did with the airlines.. you can bring in chemicals in your pockets.. bio-terrorism. Where there is a will, there is a way. Look at the suicide pilots from 9/11. They took up flying lessons..here in the United States (in Florida to be exact).... so yeah, some will go to extremes if they want to carry something out. No matter what you have in place. The only thing that the bag checks may deter are those who want to bring in alcohol. It won't stop someone who has a mission to kill... the bag checks will not bother them. They have no Conscience. Those with no Conscience have no fear or feelings...
I am not saying that this is going to happen in Disney, but one cannot say never. The terrorists did have the layout plans to Disney at one point.. that was on the news...

OK, this thread is getting silly. I'm not saying the post above is silly (I quoted it for reasons I explain below), but I think we can all agree that there is a wide spread between an idiot/jerk bringing in a gun or knife to cause trouble and a coordinated attack by al Qaeda (which I'm pretty sure doesn't need to look to the Dis for ideas or tips). I don't know if Disney security is going to deter al Qaeda from attacking; I think we're going to have to rely on the CIA, FBI, U.S. Military, and many others to help us on that one. But will a bag check keep out, or deter, 99% of people? I think so. Some people feel they are window dressing, some people feel they make a difference. The challenge with this argument is that we'll never know what they prevented, if anything.

What I do know, and why I quoted the post above, is that a dedicated terrorist will always find a way. Believe it or not, crashing planes into buildings was a path of least resistance 10 years ago. Trucks and car trunks were thoroughly searched going into the WTC after al Qaeda's failed car bomb attack on the WTC in the early 1990s, so another approach had to be developed to take them down. And it wouldn't surprise me that they hate WDW with the same passion as they dd the WTC, because WDW represents America in many ways, and thus is a visible target. But if al Qaeda or another terrorist group decides to take on WDW, I think we're going to have to rely on the military, law enforcement and intelligence agencies to prevent that one.

So, in closing, I want to go on with my life and enjoy our time at WDW. That may be one of the things that can unite us all; as humans, we always rise again and move forward.

there are two reasons for the heelys ban. on the surface, it's for safety. nobody wants to see you (or others) hurt. the deeper level is legal reasons. if you do fall flat on your face and decide to sue, disney can just turn around and blame you for violating the rules.

Disney watches everything. As our Guide said on the KTTK Tour, you cant pick a bogey in Disney without them knowing about it.

My question is...why would someone ask this question to begin with?

I asked it as... I am from Australia where there is a small amount of handgun crime because they are outlawed. (lets not get into that debate) In your country every one has one !! I thought logic would dictate that every one walk thru a scanner at the entrance. But.... I am wrong. Not going to stop us going and looking forward to it.. life is full of risks.. (I jump out of airplanes on occassions. so I accept some risk in life)

But I would think walk thru metal detectors would be a no brainer Enough said... we know how strong the gun lobby is over there ( we see Michael Ms films here too)

I know people carry guns into the theme park. Why you'd think otherwise doesn't make sense to me, but for what it's worth, I've seen LEOs discuss it on other forums and knowing full well that they're supposed to check their guns at the gate, they take them in concealed anyway because they're the type that only trust themselves for protection. And those are the ones that admit to it.

:goodvibes Before you wrote that, I was going to make the comment that off-duty LEOs were probably the biggest offenders of carrying concealed firearms at Disney. Kind of ironic. ;) Makes you kind of wonder about OP, and what the PSO in his user-name stands for?

I do understand the differences in the laws. But to say everyone here has a hand gun is a gross overstatement. I would say the majority of people do not own a gun at all, never mind a hand gun. And do you really think some thug is going to buy a ticket to WDW to rob a few people or shops? I wont even get in to the Michael Moore comment. The DIS is not the place for that conversation.

and I agree with much of what you have said.. will the thought of this happening stop me from going to Disney, no it will not.. the only point I was trying to make is that bag checks are a false sense of security when given the entire picture.. and to me.. my opinion, a waste of time. Which I'm entitled to my opinion...as we all are.
What I find ironic about the bag checks....they started right after 9/11

I know where you're coming from, it was the same way when me & ex was stationed in Germany...didn't hear of very many shootings there. I was really wary when we first came back to the states, seemed like there were shootings on the news every day. I apologize for the comment of your user-name...that is an acronym for Private Security Officer. :goodvibes

Don't let it worry you.....not everyone that owns firearms here are "bad guys"... :goodvibes

P.S. Why in the world would you jump out of a perfectly save plane!! :scared1:

I realizing you were probably intentionally exaggerating, but just so you know, in case you really think we're all packing a gun, not every American owns a gun (much less a handgun).

I've only fired a gun once in my life (and certainly don't own one), and my wife has never fired a gun. I think about 40% of Americans own a gun (including rifles, hunting guns, etc.), and the vastly overwhelming majority of those owners are highly responsible and would never dream of taking one into WDW.

But you are correct, guns are a big part of the culture in this country, and they have a strong and dedicated lobby!

Don't know where you are from, but yes many people in the USA like there guns, Myself being one of them, Not like I would have my 45 in my back as I went though the gate. Some people seem to think just because you own a gun, you run around shooting it just for fun. Anyone that would even slightly consider carrying a weapon into a Disney park is not a person that is thinking correctly and someone who should not own a weapon at all.

I am sure 99 per cent of gun owners over there do the right thing (you people are the politessed nicest folks I have ever met.. (I have been to WDW befoe) but what about the whackos (John lennon incident etc) I actually work in Govt security in Australia and I carry a gun (after mental health checks etc) No normal citizen can own a hand gun here unless licensed for Police Miltary etc. In 25 years of doing this I have never come across a crook carrying a handgun (knifes yes but not handguns)

You are correct they should not own a weapon but they can easily get one over there.

Anyway enough said my question was answered I just thought after 9 11 things would have tightened up. Still coming in Sept and looking forward to seing you wonderful nice folks at WDW (seriously) I like the USA

In 25 years of doing this I have never come across a crook carrying a handgun (knifes yes but not handguns)

That's amazing!! (Seriously) Me & DH are both in law enforcement too, I honestly just can't imagine! Brings a whole new light to the phase "You don't bring a knife to a gun fight" :goodvibes

Not taking about robbers or terrorists just you average whacko hot head who could pull a firearm out because someone pushed in front of them. All right everyone might not own a hand gun there but alot do. When I was in Vegas 15 years at a show I was on a table of 8.. yep I asked and they all owned hand guns. On a flight to and from Houston i asked four people ONLY 1 SAID HE DOES NOT OWN ONE Some parts of the country its a law that a house holder own a gun . Lets not talk about the Supreme Crt now allowing folk to buy assault rifles. I can understand a householder owning a gun for protection but not a M 16 or UZI. Must be a nightmare being a cop in the USA.. with the firepower the crooks have!!

Anyway its your country not mine and I love visiting there and love the people.. we Aussies have different views of gun ownership. I have to accept that whilst in WDW some people will be carrying.. I am never rude or anything so I am not worried .. I just thought in this day and age there would be airport style walk thrus at each theme park entrance. Obviously NOT !! (I know there would be convert security):confused3

I have had the full gun debate thing on the skydive forum dropzone.com. We know the USA will never agree with us on gun ownership The NRA has enormus political power any politician that ever dares to introduce gun control laws gets thrown out on their **** or *** as you say.

If you're a person who likes to carry a gun when your at home why would you feel the need to bring it into the Disney parks? Do you think Mickey is going to attack you?

Countries have laws that ban all personally owned guns and then wackos grab a machette and run through a school instead. You can only try to control them with security.

I think many people come to WDW with weapons and bad intentions and then they walk through the gate and the Disney Magic takes over. No more bad people.:lmao:

The bag check is a joke. It is a pain and not really effective.

You're absolutely right!!! I would like to bring in my glass bottle of cold capuchinno(sp) to drink as soon as I get in the park or maybe a glass bottle of beer in the afternoon to drink while watching a parade. If I get a littled excited and drop it & the glass shatters....oh well....maybe no one will step on it & get cut.....or if they do maybe they can get something free from Disney.....yeah those bag checks are a joke.......

Well, there's also that little thing called our "Constitution" which has what we call the "Bill of Rights", of which weapon ownership is guaranteed under the "Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights"...which is just below the "First Amendment" (Freedom of Speech), and above the "Fourth Amendment" which protects from Search and Seizure....oh, and uh, our Supreme Court which has UPHELD the "Second Amendment"...

Really, this was a question about "detection", not "ownership".
