Surely since 9/ 11 there is airport style weapons scanning at each entry to the Theme parks. I would be amazed if there ws not. Given the gun culture in the USA suely guests cannot enter the theme parks armed.... can they ??????

I believe it is against Disney policy to bring a gun into any of the parks. They do have security which quickly looks through bags but they don't do body pat downs or in-depth searches. They usually don't search peoples' bodies.

In May I was wearing my cellphone in a holder on my pants with my t-shirt covering it. I did this all day long in and out of parks for 10 days straight. One (and only one) security guard once asked me what was on my waist. The way the cell phone holder looks under my shirt it could be perceived to be a gun holster. I pulled up the edge of my shirt and showed him it was my cell phone and he waived me on. But the rest of the time I could have very easily been carrying a gun and no one would have said anything.

there are people in the parks once past security that also watch for suspicious persons and there are cameras located all over including inside the rides themselves. Disney does take security very seriously.pirate:

No detection devices--other than the Human Kind.

No you cannot carry a weapon (firearm) into the park.

Some small knives get through...I imagine a Ka Bar would attract attention..

The security we see at the gates in only part of what is going on at the bag check. Disney is also watching then to see if anyone looks a little suspicious or out of place.

You are pretty much on candid camera the whole time you are in the parks.

Pretty much. I just added that they watch you while your bags are being searched too. They don't just search your bags, they scope you out.:)

And Disney has more Security people in costume as Tourists than they have Security people in costume as Security Officers.

We were coming into Epcot via the IG last Sunday, and right by the ticket gates was a SWAT dressed Disney security officer with his dog, a black lab, laying at his feet. I'm sure they were there watching for contraban of some sort trying to enter the park.

It would be very easy to carry a small weapon into the parks. It surprises me a little.

and the thought of a guest bringing in a weapon really makes me see how much of a joke the bag check is. The bag check has been in place since just after 9/11. If someone was really going to bring in a weapon, or God forbid a bomb, they aren't going to keep it in their backpacks!!! :confused3

 They will be kept on their person.... where they aren't searched. I honestly think that the theme parks (all of them, not just Disney) & sports complexes need to ditch the bag checks..

Six Flags has had metal detectors for about 10 years in St. Louis and longer in Atlanta. You go through them much faster than the bag check at Disney which I think is a waste of time.
We were at the waterparks a week in October 2001--right after 9/11 and the week the war in Afghanstan started and shocked that they always patted the top towel in our bag. We joked that if you wanted to bring a weapon to TL, make sure to hide it in the second towel. I cannot say I felt safer from this procedure.

if someone wants to randomly start shooting people up, there are cheaper ways than buying a theme park pass to do it.

do people carry concealed weapons into the park? all the time. is it allowed? no. but that would be part of the reason for the weapons being concealed.

the insect zoos and the beach at the end of the street can rest a little easier tonight.

I'm glad we get to carry in what we want except for weapons at WDW, though. I don't think you can at Six Flags. I may be wrong though. I wouldn't be opposed to metal detectors/wands at WDW, though.

Thanks, CF for the information. It makes me a little uncomfortable for people to read on public sites how security is bad and how easy it would be to sneak something in. I guess I'm one of those that think the news shouldn't tell the entire world where our weak spots in security are since the "bad people" read and listen to the news also.

I feel the point of the bag check area and the bottlenecking of people with out bags is so people can be "checked out", so they can gauge peoples reactions and behaviors. If a person had something on their body this is the area they would most likely be acting nervous. I am under the impression the actual bag check really is to look for things like glass containers and alcohol, etc. Of course things get through. I think manly thinks like a utility knife or pepper spray type item people carry everyday that they don't even think about.

For all of those people who think Disney World's bag checks are a joke, what would you like for them to do? Scanners and/or body searches? Or do nothing and let people bring in whatever they want? For everyone who criticizes Disney World for bag searches, do you actually know for a fact that they don't work at all? That the policy is there only to search bags and it serves absolutely no other purpose despite Disney Cast Members on this board saying over and over and over again that there is a lot more to security than the bag checks?

I feel safer with bag checks because I know Disney is doing something and not just letting people go by 100% unchecked. If they went to metal detectors, can you imagine the outcry for that? Every single person who went to Disney World would have to seriously think about what they carried with them. Belt buckles set off the detectors. You really want someone to be in their Disney resort room and have to think about what they wear every single day of their vacation? That they can't wear something because it might set off the metal detector? Or have even longer lines while people who do set off the detectors have to be pulled aside further a further search?

Or do you want Disney to do nothing? Let everyone bring in whatever they want?

It's a Catch 22 situation. Too little security and they get criticized. Too much and they would get the same. Have nothing and they will get criticized even more.
The tale would be told if someone actually did bring in a gun concealed on their person and started shooting. Procedures might change then.
Let's hope it never happens....

The bag check is a joke. It is a pain and not really effective.
