we need more sit coms on tv

I can't even begin to try to think of what I would consider the "lowest common denominator" because that's just not the way my brain works. Just because I don't like something doesn't mean it's bad :confused3

:thumbsup2

There are a variety of television shows to satisfy a variety of tastes. No certain taste is superior over another.

While, again, I think labeling anyone else's preferences in that way is wrong, something a producer of Wipeout said this week does provide some fuel for that fire: Rather than making the point that the show is about rooting for someone to win (which is how I like to watch the show), the producers made it clear that the show is all about watching people wipe out. :sad2:

Hey - I like Wipeout. But yes watching people "wipe out" IS the entire point. I fully admit to laughing hysterically but it IS catering to the lowest common denominator.

i miss laughing and feeling good while watching tv.. come on enough crime show, hospital drama... im really getting sick of the drama... that is why i like my hallmark for little house and golden girls.. and tv land for roseanne ,.. im even watch married with children. and now i can watch whos the boss ... missing TGIF ..

Ooh, what channel is Who's the Boss on?

No one mentioned Raising Hope - I really got hooked on that show this year. I also LOVE Modern Family, Two and a Half Men, and How I Met Your Mother.

On occasion, I'll watch 30 Rock, Community, and Hot in Cleveland but not regularly.

(I'm a HUGE Nick at Nite/TV Land fan and watch lots of sitcoms on there - Roseanne, The Nanny, George Lopez, Home Improvement, etc. And I think Wipeout is a riot )

on at 4"00 in the afternoon for my and i live in rapid city, sd mountain time zone..

Raising Hope is the absolute best. Very offbeat humor, though, and not for everyone. That being said, my husband and I fell in love with it. Oh, and the babies (I believe they have three different babies playing Hope) are just the cutest.

More to the point, we need more comedies that are not all about sex. I am so tired watching reality TV. With a 6th grader in the house there is very little TV that we can watch because of all the sex and I am *not* a prude. The only non-"reality" TV we watch is Glee (which does have sexual content, but OK) and Castle. We used to watch "How I Met Your Mother" but that went the sex route a long time ago.

It sucks that there is no more "family hour" at 7:00 pm and even CSI can be shown. Does anyone know of any comedies that are middle-school friendly?

When I was in middle school and high school, I was a Three's Company addict. I am not sure that was entirely appropriate for somebody that age, but I sure loved that show.

Probably why I am warped today ;)

It's the writing and the delivery. Jim Parsons is so deadpan-matter-of-fact that I laugh out loud. And honestly, his character is the only one I find to be obnoxious. But he's obnoxious in such a socially stunted way that it is HILARIOUS to me. Who uses the word "coitus" in regular, everyday conversation? Hysterical.

The one episode recently had a very non-smart character trying to fit in with the guys (who knows why). He made the comment that he had watched a show about starfish and Sheldon replies, "Was the starfish wearing boxer shorts? Because you might have been watching Nickelodeon."

I have tears in my eyes just thinking about it! Soooo funny.

Yeah, it was kinda creepy. And Roger's comment about dying the way she lived was priceless.

Another good one...and, yes, that line was one of the best! I know some people don't like the characters, especially Sheldon, but my husband and I find him hysterical. Did you know that Jim Parsons won a Golden Globe tonight? Yay!

I also really enjoy the character that Mayim Bialik (remember from Blossom??) plays.

This is one sitcom that my sons relate to. My one son is bio person, my other is an engineer major and I teach AP calculus. We all know people like this.

BBT is one of the favorite shows in this house. I have been missing it this year since they moved it to Thursday. I won't miss yoga.

Sometimes I worry that those shows will be the ONLY shows on...
That'll never happen. Over-the-air broadcast television will always be the very best place to present live programming, such as sporting events, as well as news and weather. Reality and game shows will never be the only shows on. Beyond that, I think it is improbable that all scripted television will eventually be gone from over-the-air broadcast television. The extent to which that happens will depend on to what extent broadcasters and studios are able to capitalize on that broadcasting. If their hard work continues to be stripped and pirated, or if commercial avoidance becomes practically absolute, or if other changes happen that further erode the profitability of presenting comedies and dramas over-the-air, then we'll see the shift that is going on, toward more unscripted programming, continue. However, if the exploitations are reversed, then I think we can rest secure in the knowledge that there will still be a place for scripted programming over-the-air.

Do cable companies track what is being recorded on DVR? And is that reported to networks so they know that people are "DVRing" the shows even if they can't watch them due to schedules or kids with later bedtimes, etc etc? I've often wondered that...
Yes, all that is now reported. You'll see this referred to as the Live+7 ratings. However, to what end? In many cases, that number is used as a predictive indicator of how many people are skipping commercials. If a viewer skips the commercials, then that viewer is of no value to the advertiser paying for the programming to be presented.

Studios create programming that are of interest to people who buy things because they watched commercials. It is really important to remember how television programming gets paid for. It's not a government service, paid for by taxes: It's called "commercial" television because commercials is mostly how it is paid-for, and commercials are worth paying for if they mean you'll sell something that you wouldn't have sold otherwise.

I really like Raising Hope! I always just forget about it because I only watch it online.

The Middle!!!!

Yes, I so happy for him!! I think his character is hilarious.

That same episode was the one that Penny had to yell at them all for being bullies and I thought that was brilliant.

I can't begin to understand what people like about the Big Bang Theory. I have tried really hard to like it but it just isn't funny at all. The characters are so obnoxious. Ugh!

I thought I was the only one that felt this way about Big Bang Theory.

um. A lot of people watch Community...

Community, 30 Rock and Parks & Recreation(which returns this Thursday
) are 3 of the best shows on TV right now. They are so funny. But sadly these are the only sitcoms on that we find funny at all.

Yeah! Except I don't watch Community. I have a dislike of Chevy Chase that cannot be squelched.

I can't believe you have Moss in your signature. IT Crowd, woo!

We like most of the shows listed, except Two and a half Men, it has gotten icky. It's the only word I can think of to describe it :rotfl:

Community I can take or leave, but DS15 loves it.

No one has mentioned Outsourced. While it's not on the same level as some of the other shows, like 30 Rock or Modern Family, I think it's cute.
