We loved Deluxe Dining so much..we did it again! Dining review with pics! UPDATE 3/23

We're also staying at the Poly in Sept, also on the DxDP, also debating whether to do CRT or not (even though we too can have enough credits).

Thanks for taking the time to post your reviews and looking forward to the rest :thumbsup2

Day 2:

Biergarten dinner

After a full morning in the MK and a break back at the hotel, we put on our warm clothes (it was quite cool in the evenings) and headed over to Epcot for dinner at Biergarten and Illuminations!

Epcot was super busy, we trekked all the way back to Germany from the front entrance which is quite a walk, although we did stop to ride Gran Fiesta Tour and grab Maelstrom FP on the way. Our ADR was for 6:20 pm and we checked in about 6:15. After a very short wait we were seated with a family of 3 from Texas. I know some people don't like sitting with strangers, but we love meeting new people on vacation so this was right up our alley. Plus, DH is a big time beer lover, and since Germany is known for its beer.....well lets just say I didn't hear any complaints about my restaurant selection!

DH started off his meal with this baby...

100_6810.jpg

This is the hefeweisen (did I spell that correctly)? It's a lighter beer, and DH said it was good, although there was another beer he tried later that he liked MUCH better (more on that to come).

The rest of us opted for the included non-alcoholic drinks and hit the buffet!

This was Bashful's plate. Clockwise from the bottom left we're got a roll (with a healthy smear of butter), chicken schnitzel, potato dumpling and mac and cheese.

100_6808.jpg

Of course she loved the Mac and Cheese, the child has never met a plate of Mac and Cheese she didn't like. The chicken schnitzel she liked too. I left off the sauce and cut it up, so she thought it was just chicken nuggets. I told her the potato dumpling was a dumpling (I left out the potato part), since she loves chicken and dumplings. I knew she would never eat it if I told her about the potato, but needless to say she took one bite, made a nasty face, and told me there was NO way that was a dumpling. :rotfl: Oh well, I tried! She ate all the roll and went back for more of that.

Superstar had mac and cheese, applesauce and a salad.

100_6809.jpg

Superstar LOVES her a tossed salad with ranch dressing (well, really ANYTHING with ranch dressing), and although this was actually a creamy herb dressing, it tasted close enough to ranch that she liked it.

DH's plate consisted of clockwise from top: Potato Leek Soup, pretzel bread, salad with creamy herb dressing, cold potato salad, spaetzle and pickles.

100_6811.jpg

He cleaned his plate and said it was all very good, especially the soup!

My plate consisted of (clockwise from top): chicken schnitzel with red wine sauce, spaetzle, roasted potatoes with fresh herbs, a variety of cold and warm sausages, cold german potato salad, cucumber-dill salad, salmon in dill sauce, pickles and warm German potato salad.

100_6812.jpg

Everything here was quite tasty. A couple of the cold sausages were a little too "hot dog/bologna-ish" to my taste, but the hot sausages were great! I even tried a bite of sauerkraut. Not half bad! Of course then DH and I had to go back and try a few more things for good measure.

I forgot to take a pic of DH's second plate, but here is mine. Clockwise from the top left we've got a potato dumpling, pork roast with mushroom sauce, pretzel bread with German mustard, and sauerbraten.

100_6814.jpg

I loved dipping the prezel bread in the mustard! The potato dumpling was bland, though, with a gummy consistency. And the pork roast tasted like liver to me. ICK!!! I think it was probably the mushroom sauce. You know how much I LOVE mushrooms (not). I meant to put on the red wine sauce but accidentally grabbed the wrong kind. As for the sauerbraten, I was really wary of it but it was DELICIOUS! I do believe it's my new favorite German food!

Next up: dessert! I got a sampling of things. L to R we've got fresh pineapple, Bavarian cheesecake, red berry compote with vanilla sauce, pear tart and apple strudel.

100_6815.jpg

First let me mention the pineapple. I am a pineapple junkie. I love the stuff. I could eat my weight in it. If there is fresh pineapple on a buffet, you are guaranteed I will put it on my plate. If it is part of a fruit salad, you are guaranteed I will pick out all the pineapple and eat it for myself. It's THAT good.

As for the other desserts, they were all good, but the berry compote with vanilla sauce was SUPERB. This definitely ranks up there as one of the top 5 desserts in all of WDW, in my opinion. It was tart and crisp and light, and with the sweet vanilla sauce on top it created the perfect balance of sweet and tart. Not too rich, not too filling....just right.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Biergarten. We had a great time meeting new people, and the girls LOVED dancing to the oompa band!

100_6828.jpg

The theming of this restaurant is fabulous too. If you're looking for a tasty meal in Epcot, this is definitely a good choice. Will we eat here again? Hopefully one day. There are just so many WS restaurants we want to try!

After our meal and a quick ride on Maelstrom we headed back to Germany to meet up with friends and watch Illuminations. Naturally, it being only 30 minutes after our meal the girls were hungry again (told you they were grazers) and how convenient there was a beer and pretzel cart right there! The kids split a pretzel (1 snack credit) and graciously shared ONE bite with us, lol!

100_6842.jpg

I don't know if you can tell but that baby is HUGE! Warm and buttery with just the right amount of salt. One of the better pretzels I have had. The only thing missing was some spicy mustard for dipping.

DH decided to try the Oktoberfest beer.

100_6844.jpg

He loved this beer! He said it was much better than the beer he had with dinner. And it went very well with the pretzel. I had some Jasmine tea from the China tea cart for 1 snack credit because I needed to warm up. We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening in Germany and viewing Illuminations for the first time ever!

Up next...breakfast at Chef Mickey's. Will it be as wonderful as our last time? Stay tuned!

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 great reviews!! We will live vicariously through you untill we get to Poly with our Deluxe Dining!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Day 3:

Chef Mickey's breakfast

On our first family trip to the world back in July 2008 Chef Mickey's was by far our favorite breakfast, especially the kids, so it was a given that we would do it again this time. In fact, we hadn't been at our hotel more than half an hour before my kids started begging to go to Chef Mickey's. They love it THAT MUCH.

I decided to start off our Epcot morning with a 7:00 am ADR at Chef Mickey's in hopes we could still make rope drop at 9:00 at Epcot. Which we did by 10 slim minutes, no thanks to the monorail service (they had problems with them ALL week - slow trains, no trains, and on Thursday the entire system was shut down).

Anyway, the resort monorails don't start running until 7:00 am and since we had to ride all the way from the Poly to CR, we didn't get there until about 7:10. No problems, we checked in, had our picture taken and were seated very quickly. After drink orders were taken we all hit the buffet.

Grumpy had quite the interesting plate. We have a bowl of syrup, hard boiled egg, scrambled eggs, grapes, biscuit, Mickey Waffle, sausage and some butter. Whatever works! She liked it, that's what counts.

100_6891.jpg

Bashful decided to carbo load for breakfast. Here we have a sweet roll, tater tots, a donut hole, a brownie (or perhaps that is chocolate cake??), Mickey Waffle and a pancake smothered in butter and syrup. Of course she liked it...I mean really, how can you go wrong with all that bread and sugar?

100_6892.jpg

I am a big fan of scrambled eggs. However, the eggs were a big runny mess. I mean, it almost looked like egg soup. So I skipped the eggs and decided on the only things that actually looked somewhat edible to me: a biscuit with sausage gravy, potato casserole, and cheese blintzes with cherry and blueberry sauce.

100_6893.jpg

The biscuit with gravy was not bad, just different. I have lived in Tennessee my whole life so I know good Southern food. Which this was not. The gravy tasted weird to me. Not bad, just weird. Still, I ate it all. The potato casserole was just plain nasty no matter how you look at it. I took one bite and decided the rest was inedible. I ate a couple of bites of the blintzes and they were okay, but nothing special.

Next time I hit the cold bar, which offered a much more appetizing selection of food, when I struck the jackpot. I found my beloved apple/yogurt/raisin mix from last time! I prepared and enormous bowl.

100_6894.jpg

This stuff was just as good as I remembered -- vanilla yogurt, fresh crisp apples, grapes, cinnamon granola and chewy raisins. I love this stuff! I polished off the whole bowl. Then I hit the cold bar again to get a Mickey Waffle, which I love, and some strawberry bananas, which were very yummy! I also grabbed a rice krispie treat for Superstar.

100_6900.jpg

DH, btw, was not impressed AT ALL by the hot offerings either. On the whole we were VERY disappointed this time. Thank goodness for the cold bar, which saved us. You can never go wrong with cereal, fruit and muffins. Still, that's a lot of money to pay for what amounts to, basically, a continental-style breakfast. But our kids LOVE it there, we're guaranteed to see Minnie, which is a must-do for Bashful, and we're able to get a super early ADR to ensure we make rope drop, so I supposed Chef Mickey's will remain on our list. Ah, the things we do for our kids!

Up next...Les Chefs de France. Will Remy make an appearance? Stay tuned!

Joining in,popcorn:: , so far so good! We went to Chef Mickey's for breakfast 2 years ago and I remember thinking, meh . My kids and DH liked it, though. We went to Ohana's for the first time in September and we loved it:love:

Also joining in and looking forward to the rest of your reviews!! I am in hopes to head back during the end of 2011 and would like to try some different places..

Day 3:

Les Chefs de France lunch

Spent the morning in FW at Epcot, then headed over to WS for lunch in France. As some of you may have seen, crowds were HUGE this week, in fact touringplans.com ranked it as a crowd level of 10. This was very apparent in WS, there were TONS of people walking around, especially hanging out in France! Our ADR was for 1pm, we checked in right at 1:00 then we sat and waited...and waited....and waited. As we sat there waiting to be seated, the front podium was turning away walkups left and right saying they were booked for the rest of the day. Finally, we were seated around 1:30 and they quickly brought us some bread and butter.

100_6920.jpg

This bread was crusty on the outside, chewy on the outside and truly delicious! Perfect in the way only French bread can be.

We were seated by the window so we were able to watch some of the floor show outside as we waited...and waited...and waited....to order.

100_6928.jpg

The French move at a different pace than we do, and that was pretty evident by our waiting times to be seated, waited on, and served at Les Chefs de France. Everyone was wonderfully nice, just very lah-di-dah about the slow service. There were SEVERAL diners getting frustrated around us. But anyway, on with the show.

The kids all had the cheese puff pastry for an appetizer.

100_6929.jpg

Superstar wanted the salad, but they did not have ranch as a dressing, only vinaigrette or blue cheese, so she settled for this. She didn't touch it though, and the other 2 declared it nasty and only picked pieces of the bread off the top. Looked good to me, though. :confused3

DH had some kind of blue cheese salad for his appetizer, which he said was very tasty.

100_6934.jpg

I am big time soup lover, so I knew exactly what I was going for: the French onion soup.

100_6930.jpg

It was delicious, perhaps slightly less flavorful than I would have liked, but very good nonetheless. If you were paying OOP, this with the crusty bread and a small salad would make a PERFECT lunch!

Next thing you knew our entrees were arriving. Superstar chose the breaded chicken strips served over pasta.

100_6935.jpg

She ate all the chicken, dipped in ketchup. The noodles had no sauce on them so she wasn't really thrilled with them. They were basic penne noodles from what I could tell.

Bashful chose the hamburger and french fries.

100_6937.jpg

She liked the burger a lot, so I took a bite. Just as I suspected...a premium bun! We all know Bashful loves her carbs, and this bun was REALLY tasty and slightly sweet. It somehow improved the whole burger overall.

Grumpy, my adventurous eater, chose the fish. When given an option, Grumpy will almost ALWAYS choose fish, shrimp, lobster or crab. I think she must have been a sea creature in a previous life.

100_6938.jpg

I was salivating when I saw her plate. I love fish too, and this fish was very tender and tasty! The green beans were delicious too and very fresh tasting. Honestly, it was HUGE and looked like an adult plate to me. Grumpy literally shoveled the fish in with her hands, she liked it so much. However, she was not a fan of the green beans, preferring the nasty canned version. (Where did I go wrong???).

DH ordered the hamburger and fries. Actually, he asked the server which was better, the croque monsieur (ham and cheese) or the burger and without skipping a beat she said the burger, so that's what he chose. He also commented on the yummy bun, but said otherwise it was your standard burger and fries.

100_6939.jpg

I decided on the mac and cheese.

100_6936.jpg

This was fabulously good and had a hint of sweetness...nutmeg, perhaps? It was so rich, though, I could only manage a few bites. Especially knowing that dessert was coming up.

Speaking of dessert, Superstar and Bashful had the sorbet of the day, which was strawberry. It was tasty although they didn't care for it, I think they were expecting strawberry ice cream.

100_6940.jpg

Grumpy went with your basic chocolate chip cookie.

100_6942.jpg

I urged DH to order the profiteroles so I could try them (I had my eye on something else), but he went with a chocolate mousse cake, which was tasty but rich.

100_6941.jpg

I chose the apple cinnamon crepes which were divine!

100_6943.jpg

And at one point during the meal the chef himself did stop by to say hello!

100_6931.jpg

The girls were very excited to know that Remy himself prepared their meal, hehe.

We enjoyed our meal here enough, but felt that it just took too long to dine. It was over 2 hours from the time we checked in until we left, which really was unacceptable for lunch. We had planned on doing a Kim Possible mission after lunch, but the kids were SO tired after that ordeal that I headed back to the hotel with the little ones while DH stayed and did one little mission with Superstar before coming back to the hotel. I don't think we'll be doing this one again.

Up next...Boma dinner. What will my picky husband think? Stay tuned!

great reviews, youre doing a fab job.
I really want to try Biergarten, i might even try a beer ;)
Can you remember how much the large beers are?

keep up the great work.xxx:goodvibes

Wow!! great reviews so far. I totally agree about CRT being not worth the price..we prefer to to Crystal Palace to get to the MK before park opening.

I don't think we would ever do Deluxe with our kids...too many sit down meals for the kids to handle I think. Hubby and I did it for a 3 night anniversary trip in Oct 08 and we LOVED it!!

curious is CRT still all you can eat? I think, I liked the the other preplated version better. So, I'm a little bummed with your CRT review. I can't wait to read more.

Up next...Boma dinner. What will my picky husband think? Stay tuned!

Just found your reviews today....great review of Chefs de France....it helped me decide to keep our ressies (lunch too) for our July trip. I was worried that DH wouldn't have anything that he would pick from..he can be picky! ;)

Just did a HUGE review of Boma with lots of pics and my dang IE crashed and I lost it all!!!:sad::sad:

As soon as I calm down I will try and put together a new review. Sorry for the delay!

Oh that is so frustrating when that happens. But your reviews and pics are great! I am subscribing.

curious is CRT still all you can eat? I think, I liked the the other preplated version better. So, I'm a little bummed with your CRT review. I can't wait to read more.

You know, I honestly don't know the answer to that. I don't recall the server telling us it was all you can eat, but then again he may have said it and I just didn't hear. Honestly, that french toast was so filling, especially when you add on the fruit and sweet rolls at the beginning, that I could not imagine asking for more.

Thank you, thank you everyone for the kind comments!!! Dining reviews are actually quite a bit of work with all the writing, uploading pics, identifying the stuff on your plate (sometimes not so easy :rotfl:) and whatnot, but they help me SO much and I enjoy reading them so much, that it's the least I can do to create my own reviews.

Boma, attempt #2....(keep your fingers crossed)

Day 3:

Boma dinner

Our ADR for Boma was at 7:05 pm, but since hubby had never seen AKL before we decided to head over early to check it out. We arrived around 6:30, checked out the lobby a bit then headed outside to see the animals. There were plenty to see and the girls, especially my animal lover Grumpy, were excited. After a few pics I decided to check in a bit early, at 6:45. The hostess told me their computer system was down so they were running a bit behind, but we would be seated by 7:15. No problem! Well 7:15 came and went...then 7:30...and by 7:45 I had a full out mutiny on my hands with my kids. After a few visits to the podium to ask what was going on I had gotten nothing but very vague replies and no help whatsoever. Might I mention it was PACKED, they were turning away walkups and almost all the waiting patrons were getting testy.

Well it turns out after all that they had LOST our handwritten ticket to be seated, but rather than apologize and explain what happened, we continued to get vague "we promise you'll be seated shortly" answers. Finally I think the hostess could tell I was ready to blow...it was 1 hour after our check-in time, 40 minutes after our ADR time, and my kids were STARVING, so they quickly bused a table and seated us.

The good news is, we had Dilly!!! :lovestruc He is one of my favorite servers at WDW, we had him when we ate breakfast at Boma back in 2008, and he put us at ease right away.

First up were drinks! DH went with a Yuengling, I had Diet Coke and the girls decided on the Tinkerbell light up cup w/ Lemonade Punch.

100_6955.jpg

This is not on the dining plan and at $7 a pop is not cheap, so they are only allowed this drink ONCE during our trip. It actually saves me money in the long run because they like to take the Tink to Wishes so it saves me spending $30 buying a cheap light-up toy from a pushcart.

We quickly hit the buffet and filled out plates. First up is Grumpy's plate. She chose plain penne pasta, a chicken nugget, mac and cheese and a meatball (cut up) all from the kids buffet, along with salmon, a Durban roasted chicken leg (she is a chicken leg afficionado) and some corn muffins from the regular buffet.

100_6952.jpg

She ate almost everything, which is saying something because she usually pecks like a bird. She cleaned the chicken leg and actually tried to suck the meat off the bones. I guess it's safe to say she liked it. :rotfl:

Superstar was a little less adventurous. She pretty much stuck with the kids buffet. We have mac and cheese, a meatball and some fresh fruit.

100_6953.jpg

She really liked the meatball because she went back for more. A LOT more. And she scarfed the fruit too, which was of excellent quality, I might add. All of it was ripe, juicy and free of blemishes...probably the best we saw all week on a buffet.

Now my DH, who I have dubbed Mr. Picky, was not too thrilled when I told him we were eating here. His exact words, if I recall, were "African food? Are you crazy?" But I had heard such great things about Boma, plus I loved breakfast here last time (which he had missed) that I knew we had to try it.

He played it safe at first, going for some kind of potato soup and a salad.

100_6959.jpg

He said it was very good. Shock of all shocks...he liked something African! :faint:

I was definitely the most adventurous of the group. I decided I would sample a little bit of as much as I could just to get a taste for it. Plate #1 consisted of fresh strawberries and pineapple, falafel with yogurt sauce, a cold pasta salad (sorry forgot the name), pita wedges, Kool Slai and Watermelon Rind Salad.

100_6960.jpg

The fruit, of course was excellent. The pasta salad was tasty but nothing special. The pita was...well...pita. LOL The Kool Slai was great! I love cole slaw, and this had a nice creamy yet very light dressing, was nice and crunchy with big slices of red cabbage, and slightly sweet. The falafel I was not quite as thrilled with. It seemed overcooked and a bit dry, but the flavor was good. The watermelon rind salad was pretty icky to me. It tasted almost exactly like that pickled ginger you get with sushi. Blech. Oh well, at least I tried it! :thumbsup2

DH's plate #2 was pretty much full of the carved beef loin, which he couldn't stop raving about, so I decided I would have to try some too. My plate #2 also contained some Boma mustard to go with said meat, Durban roasted chicken, peanut rice, some other kind of rice (saffron, maybe??), Fufu and corn muffins.

100_6961.jpg

Everything on this plate was DIVINE!!! With the exception of the saffron rice, which was very dry. Loved the meat with Boma mustard, the chicken was tender and subtly spiced, the peanut rice was moist and sticky and very flavorful, the Fufu tasted like my favorite sweet potato casserole, and the corn muffins were sweet and just moist enough.

Oh, and lest I forget, I had also picked a plate of dips with crispy flatbread for us to try, although no one else in the family would touch it with a 10 foot pole. Fine..more for me! Here we've got 3 types of hummus -- sun-dried tomato, black olive, and one other kind (so sorry I forgot the name).

100_6962.jpg

They were all super tasty!!!

Finally it was time for....dessert. And you know right where I was headed..to the zebra domes! After hearing raves about them on this board for years, I just had to try one. I also sampled a few other goodies. L to R we have bread pudding with vanilla sauce, Kenyan coffee tart, Peanut Butter Mousse, Zebra Dome and Apple Cobbler.

100_6964.jpg

You will find bread pudding with vanilla sauce on almost every buffet at WDW. This was pretty much your run of the mill bread pudding. Nothing special. A little too gooey for me, actually. The coffee tart had a wonderful coffee flavor without being too overpowering. I liked it. The peanut butter mousse....OH MY. It was set on a bed of peanut brittle. Can I tell you how amazing this was? It's one of my new favorites in all of WDW! :lovestruc  :lovestruc  The Zebra Dome ranked a close second. VERY yummy!!! Now I know what all the hype is about! The cobbler I wasn't crazy about. The apples were way too tart for me, and the spices were weird.

The girls decided to split a dessert plate. They chose L to R: caramel cheesecake, passion fruit tarts???, brownie, chocolate mousse and a peanut butter mousse.

100_6963.jpg

They liked all of it with the exception of the fruit tarts. Superstar made a horrible face so of course I had to try it. NASTY! The fruit was very bitter and the consistency was a little too gelatinous. Definitely not our cup of tea.

This meal cost us 5 dining credits (1 credit each). We paid OOP for the Tink drinks and DH's beer. I have to say we will DEFINITELY be back at Boma next trip!!! This is probably my favorite buffet in all of Disney. We all found stuff we liked, and the AKL is such a nice place to visit. Hopefully next time we go it won't be so crowded and the host podium will be fully functional!

Up next...'Ohana breakfast. Will we make it to rope drop at DHS?
