We all felt sick after Mission Space

Like the other posters, I'm sorry Mission Space left you feeling so ill. I have a tendency toward motion sickness myself, but I followed their instructions exactly - kept looking at the screen, never closed my eyes or looked away - and I came out of it with only a slight light-headed feeling. And there are many signs on the way into the ride warning about the potential for motion sickness, and the video clips that you watch on the way in also caution about this several times. I'm not sure how you managed to miss those!!

In March this year my 4 yo daughter and I went on it for the first time. I told her to keep her head back, look straght ahead, and keep her eyes open. We both loved it and went on it two more times.

In November me and my now 5 you daughter went on it 5 more times. I think it's her favorite ride now and she is so happy she can reach the buttons now :)

However, my wife went on it once with our daughter in November and came off of it feeling a little light headed and said that she wouldn't go on it again. So I guess it really just depends on the person...

This is what I was afraid of, and we all chickened out. My 7 year old was crying because she wanted to go on it! LOL We then took the girls on Test TRack, and that quickly calmed them down.. we all loved Test Track! Sorry you didn't like it!

My DH rode that ride and he didn't feel so well for a while afterwards.

I don't like close spaces, so there is no way I would ride it.

My sister, 12, hates rides and I had to practically lie to her to get her on MS. She loved it, however, and I like anything so of course I liked this. Also, if your family gets a bit sick on Star Tours, then I don't think MS would have been the best idea since both are simulator rides, and MS being much, much more intense. Everyone is affected differently with rides, though. I'm sorry MS ruined you and your family's day. :(

I HATED this ride too! I am a ride-aholic and can take any rollercoaster or thrill ride. I got seriously concerned when I got into MS and saw barf bags in front of the seats, when I rode this with my 69 year old father-in-law.
From the minute this ride started I felt extremely sick. The takeoff made my cheeks and jaw feel like they were falling off. I just stared straight ahead and prayed for it to end. I felt sick for a good hour or two.
I will never ride this again!!! BUT - I should mention FIL loved it. Go figure!

I enjoyed it,but I didnt think it was the big thrill ride it was made out to be.

Yeh I'm with you, I didn't think it was all that great either. Maybe it was too much build up or something but I was really disappointed in it, the blast off was the only thing that lived up to my expectations.

I generally hate thrill rides. Splash is the only mountain I've done, and even the drop in Pirates give me that feeling in my stomach I hate.

I LOVE Mission Space. The first time, I felt absolutely no spinning. The second time, i was more relxed and looked around a bit more - then I could sense the spinning. Even then, I got much more a spinning sensation leaning my head back on the teacups.

A CM friend of mine told me that about 80-90% of those reporting sickness from Mission Space had histories of motion sickness.

I think a lot of people are curious about this ride, but very autious since reports vary so much. It isn't for clausterophobes, for sure. Aside from that, I think if you can lean you head back outside the teacups at full tilt without feeling ill, you can handle Mission Space. if not, maybe yes, maybe no - so try it on an empty stomach!

For someone like me who has always been fascinated with spae travel, it is an amazing time.

I got on this ride, which was not in my best interest. I should have listened to the warnings. I sat there and stared at the ceiling the whole time. I could not do anything. I had a barf bag just incase. I told my DH it was awful and he did not believe me. (we did child swap) Anyway, we both felt sick for the rest of the day. Never again!! My advice is if you get a little motion sick stay off this ride.

Never to become an astronaut!!

Though nobody in our group felt ill, 3 of the 4 people didn't feel as well getting off MS as they did getting on. There is an area as you exit the ride where people who aren't up to walking can recuperate for a bit. The problem is you can't predict how MS will affect you. It's NOT at all like the teacups, so being able to handle that or not doesn't tell you anything about your chances on MS. Also, it doesn't matter if 6 year old Jeffrey or 90 year old Grandpa rode and felt great, that's no guarantee you will. I think any ride with motion sickness bags and a dedicated recovery area tells you that the engineers didn't expect everyone would hop off the ride chortling and guffawing. Many people ride with no problems, but it's more than just a few who feel anywhere from "weird" to "downright sick" when they emerge from their Mission to Mars. As for me, I've flown my last mission and am now retired from the astronaut program. I'll leave it to the next group of adventurers to carry on as my vacation time is too valuable to waste feeling "weird".

This is precisely why I am very nervous about M:S. I don't have a history of "motion sickness" exactly, but I can't read in a moving car. DS has thrown up in the past from looking down at a toy in his lap while the car was moving, but this summer when we drove to see relatives he read and played his Game Boy in the car with no problems. I just don't know what to do. I almost think we should skip it because I don't want to feel sick all day. I guess we could ride it last and hope we get back to the hotel OK! Thanks to all for sharing your experiences!

But the fact is, there are signs ALL OVER THE PLACE saying the ride can make you sick. I've never seen so many warnings for any ride as Mission:Space.

True and I read somewhere that when testing this ride there were no warnings and real sickness from the ride was rare. Disney was then advised to put the warnings in and many more people reported sickness.

I think that, for some people, they work themselves into a frenzy worrying about the motion sickness that they are more likely to get sick. I know that the sickness is real (so no flaming me lol), but some people can convince themselves that they are likely to get sick, just like the ginger that my DH took could have convinced him that he wouldn't be sick, ie, placebo effect.

I do want to ride sometime and actively look around to see how I feel (am I asking for trouble it what?). I do push the buttons and helped my 5yo with his buttons (as if the ride won't work if the buttons aren't pushed :) ) so I wasn't looking straight ahead.

As far as people riding it with all the warnings, since a person doesn't know how they will feel on this particular ride and the fact that this ride is so different than any other, I sure wouldn't have any less sympathy for a person for riding the ride, even with all the warnings.

If you are able to tolerate Bonine (after trying it out at home) take that the night before riding. Or go with my favorite, the ginger capsules.

My DD(16) and I took dramamine before going on MS. My DH didn't take any, he didn't need to. I got very sick on the ride (well after it) one of those people that had a bag in hand if I needed it. My DD didn't feel well but after awhile was fine. I had to go to the first aid station to rest. Then back to the hotel. I did everything they said to do, but it didn't work :guilty: I will not go on that ride again. DH and DD can I will wait for them. Also, sorry to hear you had a bad time too. I know how you felt.

I avoided this ride, as I get motion sickness easily. My dh, however, has never had it in his life, followed the rules, and was sick for hours after the ride. It really interfered with our day, since he's not much fun when he's sick...........we ended up going back to the hotel early and back out later..........he didn't feel better until after resting. I really doubt it had anything to do with the signs or warnings, as it took him completely by surprise since he's never had that trouble before. He says he'll never ride it again.......and I told him I wouldn't let him if he wanted to!

It truly sounds as though this ride just reacts differently on everyone. People who've never had motion sickness - got sick. :guilty: And people who often get motion sickness - had a great time. :cool1: So it sounds to me, after reading all the others' stories, that how this ride affects you is just a toss up.
You know, I probably did read the warning signs about sickness. I probably just didn't pay much attention because not much has bothered me before. It's been a week now, and I probably just have forgotten about the signs. I do remember lots of warnings about small cramped spaces though. I do have a bit of trouble with claustrophobia, so I probably paid more attention to those signs.
You know, when something new comes out at Disney, it's really hard not to go on it. I would suggest, if possible, to go on it last, so if you get sick, you can go home to bed.

Thanks everyone for discussing this. It has really helped me understand that some enjoy this ride. As for me, if it wasn't illegal, I'd take a hammer to it. :badpc: :badpc:
Just kidding :earboy2:

Hi PomCoach ~ You're never upside down, and I'm sorry you had such a terrible time. I have chronic sinus and cluster migraines and I was able to ride M:S and didn't have any effect (except for my ulcer that got 'excited' then I popped a pill and was fine....) so I hope you feel better now (trying to make you laugh a bit) and maybe if you take a motion sickness pill/patch you might enjoy it better next time.....

I disagree. If you get the teacups spinning full blast and lean your head way back, you'll feel much more of the forces that induce sickness in M:S than on M:S. If you can handle that without sickness (albeit with dizziness), I think you would probably handle M:S without sickness as well.

Note this is quite different then keeping your head more or less over the steering wheel on the teacups. In that case, your head (specifically your inner ears) are much closer to the center of the cup, which is hardly spinning at all.

But if you can take your head outside the edge of the cup without feeling ill, I very much doubt M:S would make you sick.

Now it's also possible that if you feel sick doing that on the teacups you may NOT feel sick in M:S, it's just a bit more likely that M:S will give the same sensation.

M:S does lack the orbital motion of the cups (the movement of the cups around), which can produce some disorienting lurches when coupled with the spinning.

The best test for M:S wuld probably be the ride where you are in a spinning cylinder and then the floor drops out. Aside from the psychological threat of no floor, the forces on you body are similar, if different magnitudes.

Still, the teacup test is a good one. I don't think you could find anyone who could lean their head out of a fast spinning teacup who could not also handle M:S without quease.

We all had different reactions.

My Dad thought the ride was neat, but didn't dig the claustrophobic conditions, his fiancee on the other hand lost her HOB Gospel Brunch shortly after getting off.

My sis, boyfriend (who can't take spinny rides) and I (big chicken) all loved it. In fact, when we left my sister alone in Epcot while we went to the waterpark, she went back on the ride 5 times in a row!

I was super nervous to go on this ride in October because I too get Motion Sickness. I can not read in the car or ride Star Tours without getting sick. I went on Back to the Future at USF and felt awful. I took dramamine 30 min before and also obeyed all the warnings very strictly and did fine. I was terrified that I was going to throw up, but I just felt a little funny like everyone else. I think that you can not compare this ride to anything else. I also do not think that Tower or RNRC are actual hardcore thrill rides, really only be Disney standards. M:S is the only true intense thrill ride they have.
