Had some great advice so far - many thanks to all who replied to my other thread!

Just wondered what parents of babies (ours will be 8 months) found absolutely invaluable when they went.

Do we need to pack everything including the kitchen sink, or can we get away with buying stuff out there?

We have never made a trip with children as young as yours but I would feel pretty confident that you would be able to buy all your needs out there.
Walmart, Walgreens and Publix are extremely well stocked with almost everything under the sun.
If your anything like us you will end up coming back with things you never even knew you needed :goodvibes

We took nappies - DON'T! They sell Pampers exactly like ours and Huggies swim nappies. Just take a few for the first couple of days. If you do end up deciding to formula feed - take your own as they don't have our brands.

if you are staying in a hotel then I would recommend taking some sterilising tablets to clean out bottles (if still using) cups etc as we did not seem to be able to get them clean and could not find sterilising tablets anywhere in US when I asked for them they looked at me as if I was mad!!!! I still use them to help clean DS swim drink bottles, normally wash them and then leave in soak with a tablet overnight.

This is because they don't sterilise in the USA like we do, they sterilise using dishwashers. If you are staying somewhere with a microwave in the room - microwave sterilising bags are good, but also you don't need to sterilise after 6 months - DD was fine.

Hi,

we took our DD to LA last year when she was 9 months, dispite all of our concerns she was an absolute dream. Its surprising that she adapted quicker to the time, weather etc, than we did.
The best thing we purchased from Walmart was a mid size stubby thermos flask that we filled with boiling water each day (we had a kettle from a previous trip), so we could put her jar of food into, to heat up, so we didnt have to find a coffee shop or restaurant to ask for food to be heated. that way we could give it to her when she wanted it!

oh and we took some cold water sterilizing tablets, just because we didnt have the same kind of washing facilities as at home as we stayed in a hotel.

Have fun and enjoy every minute of it.

We took DD at 13 months and although we weren't sterilising at home we did take a travel kettle to be sure that we could give her cups a good clean after her milk each morning/evening.
We did make a trip to Walmart and could easily have found everything we ever needed but actually decided this time (taking our second DD at a similar age) it's proabably not necessary - but being a year old is different and at 8 months you might still need formula/baby friendly food?

I did take enough nappies (and a few to spare!) for the fortnight and will do the same again - because it leaves me plenty of space for souveniers on the journey home :rotfl:

Other essentials? Our own stroller (v.lightweight), BabyBjorn carrier (not used much in the parks but very handy at the airport/on buses and boats), DDs Grobag (other bedding was provided, with cute Mickeys on the sheet :)

Things we economised on to save space/weight? Books (we took two for the plane and then bought two more as souveniers), toys (about 5 unfamiliar small toys for the plane and then bought a Mickey shape sorter very early on in the stay which was a great souvenier and kept DD busy the whole trip in our room, along with a helium balloon bought on the first day and lasted 2 weeks!), clothes (yes, again, more souveniers!!)

Yes to all this - nappies outbound means more room to bring home goodies :goodvibes

We bought DD jars of food out there and she found some biscuits she loved too - we shop in Publix and they have a great range of baby food.

DD loved her stacking cups and they were very easy to carry on the plane - and she played with them in the room.

I bought some dish soap out there for washing DD cups and bowls as we tooj her baby cereal with us and fed her in the room each morning.

Buy the spray on no rub sunscreen once you get there as it is so much easier with the little ones.

I will post if I think of anything else - I know we took too much stuff first time but I was happy I had it as it made me less worried :goodvibes

You don't say how old DD is now or if you have started weaning. Just to let you know, we did something called baby led weaning (awesome!) which meant DD never had purees or jars just real food from 6 months on, therefore we didnt have to worry about heating purees etc.
