Florida's numbers this week are now officially worse than ours ever were in New York. Great job. :(

The population in Florida is about 2.5 times that of New York, so it's still fewer cases per capita. Not that it's at all good, I worry that the hospitalizations will shoot up and cause all sorts of problems.

Though I am for WDW opening, I think it's less risky than opening bars back up and everything is ultimately a risk-reward balance on a bunch of scales including public health and economy. But I think the people who choose to go should do so carefully, taking into account their own risk factors and those of the people they plan to interact with immediately once back home. I mean, I wouldn't go to WDW and then go back home and visit grandma in the nursing home right away. I wouldn't go if I was in a risk group -- on immunosuppressants, over 60 years old, obese, diabetic, etc.

The thought of wearing a mask all day for multiple days in the Florida heat and humidity alone is enough to make me, personally, not want to go. I went to the zoo here in Atlanta for a couple of hours and got sick of the cloth mask, it was stifling, I wouldn't have wanted to wear it outside for another 8 hours. If anyone is planning to go, my advice is to take some lighter-weight surgical masks in addition to reusable cloth masks, as I suspect the surgical masks will be less annoying to wear in humidity.

No company is too big to fail. Has happened before. Didn’t Disney take on tons of debt last year buying Fox? Sudden stop of revenues will hurt any healthy corporation. Look at the airlines. Many were healthy and has billions in reserves , low debt and now need bailouts items they fail.

If WDW fails, they'll take out a good chunk of Orlando's economy. There are businesses surrounding these parks that also depend on them. It's like Iceland losing WOW airlines. It put them into a recession. You'll have a FL based recession if WDW goes under.

The population of New York is roughly 19.4 million as of 2020, Florida is 21.4 million. That’s not 2.5 times

Oh wow, you're right on further digging. I Googled and it claimed 8.399 million, and graphed it compared to New Jersey which made me think it meant the state, but I guess it meant the city. Bad Google!

8.4 million is NYC.

The NYC area saw terrible numbers, much worse than the rest of the state.

Florida's hotspot is the Miami area, but cases are more evenly distributed throughout the state.

The counties in the WDW area also are seeing a big spike.

Let's say WDW fails. You wipe out most of Orlando's economy. People panic sell their homes and flee. Home prices tank. And folks try find new jobs. This would be a mess. Do you really think this would be allowed to happen?

And over 1100 cases here in Orange County alone.

Yeah, they shouldn't open. Disney is getting ready to export COVID-19 to the rest of the country. Here in NJ, Hoboken reported that they saw a two day spike in cases, which was a two day total of 13 new cases. Here in NJ, we have little virus, and so if contact tracers get on it, like they did in Hoboken, then can figure out what's going on. Well, all 13 cases were due to those 13 individuals traveling to states with a higher level of community transmission.

So, I hope Disney is prepared for that kind of news.

Reopening New Jersey: Hoboken sees 2-day spike in COVID-19 cases; patients traveled to hot spots

Hoboken officials announced the rise in cases Saturday during a press conference.
NEW JERSEY (WABC) -- Hoboken officials announced Saturday a two-day spike in cases, the highest since mid-May.

Six cases were confirmed on Thursday and seven on Friday.

Mayor Ravinder Bhalla said all 13 cases were those who traveled to states with alarming COVID-19 rates. 12 of the 13 went to states on New Jersey's travel advisory quarantine list, including Florida, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina.

"What the Hoboken Health Department has observed with the recent two-day spike of 13 cases on Thursday and Friday, thanks to their quick and diligent contact tracing, is that all 13 of the new cases traveled for work or pleasure outside of Hoboken to states with rising COVID-19 rates," Bhalla said.

He said those states included Florida, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Yea Disney World closing permanently would be utterly disastrous to Florida’s economy especially Orlando and the surrounding area. My wife and I don’t work for Disney or any related business, but so many of my daughters classmates parents work at either the parks, Disney Springs restaurants, Disney Corporate, a surrounding Disney dependent business or a travel agency. Some work at similar places near Universal as well. I can’t imagine would this area would look like if those parks disappeared.

I agree.

Today they're reporting 11,458 additional cases.

And the newspaper this morning said more than 7,000 kids in the state have tested positive and two have died. This state has been so irresponsible that it's beyond belief.

Disney has plenty of money. They tapped their ginormous credit line when this all started. They obviously aren't going to close indefinitely. But opening up now, as Florida's cases are exploding, seems to me to be very dangerous. If you go to Florida right now and take off your mask indoors....anywhere where there are other people, you are risking getting this virus. .

I think, you'll have a young demographic going to FL, so I think, they will still show up baring travel restrictions. They need to leave the grandparents at home.

I feel the same exact way!

Not only are cases skyrocketing here in Florida, but anywhere that hosts gatherings for people from all over is just ridiculous! Purely a financial decision and putting so many people at risk.

On the other side, as a Florida resident, it makes me almost physically sick to drive around see cars with tags from all over the country! Go home, for goodness sake! WHY ARE YOU HERE? Please just go home. Florida will be here when this is all over.

Our retail workers and gas stations are at enough risk without dragging all these travelers here. So completely selfish. We are not even traveling within the state and are still only grocery shopping once a month. If things get any worse than they are, I will limit that to pick up only and not go in stores at all.

Sorry for getting off topic ..... But this is just such a train wreck waiting to happen. I'm so sad for all the people that WILL die and their families.
As a fellow Floridian in Palm Beach county I totally second your opinion! We see the car movers dropping out of state cars off daily! People in ny are buying homes here at an unprecedented rate! It is crazy! I have DVc and passes and would not travel to Disney or anywhere else in this state!

In California the Governor says you can open or must close but local/county officials can be more restrictive.

yup. our public health officer is getting push back from city and county officials in our region b/c he's trying to do his job and keep people safe health wise while they are really only focusing on the economic impact but he's got the power. he recently had the first person in the region jailed for openly defying the self quarantine orders w/an active diagnosis.

it's been allowed to happen before when primary/major industries and employers have been purposely closed in other places. the closures of military bases in the 90's devastated areas that had become overly reliant on them for their economic stability. at least one california city has only claimed to have turned the corner in the last 2 years to a semblance of economic stability after over 20 years of financial hardship and 2 trips to bankruptcy court b/c of the impact of losing their military base.

i don't think the state of florida will let wdw go under but i think it's foolish for any region to become singularly reliant on one or two employers/industries to drive or DIVE their entire economy.

Disney has to be watching in horror. 11,400 cases in Florida.

You would think that Disney is looking in horror but it does appear that its a go to open, unles the Gov. of Florida puts a hold on the opening. It's almost too late to stop the opening now. I just hope Disney will not regret this decision.

I can't imagine the pressure isn't going to mount on the governor of Florida. He's presiding over a raging outbreak. Listen, it's great to be pro-business, but they're going to start having serious problems in Florida. But if he won't shut it down, Disney should do the responsible thing and not invite guests into the middle of a dumpster fire.

I'm honestly just so incredibly bummed out at how horrible we've done here in the U.S.
