And that my concern is for my senior mom who will be joining us next week.
Get your Mom an ECV and have her run the heely kids over.

Thank goodness! I remember being there in May and was astounded by the number of kids we saw wearing them...in the parks, around the hotels, etc. I was just waiting for some kid to lose control on the bridge at AK and go toppling! :guilty: What a scary thought!

Some of my kids have a hard enough time walking in normal sneakers, I wouldn't dare stick those things on their feet and set them loose in WDW or anywhere else there would be unsuspecting victims in their path, surely there would be trouble :scared1:

More than once I've seen kids in Heelys end up flat on their backs at WDW because they've lost their footing. I don't think they should be allowed and wish CM's could confiscate the wheels and have parents pick them up at Guest Services upon leaving the park.

Next they need to do something about the scooters and strollers. I am tired of having my heels rammed into by them or they just stop right in front of you and you end up falling into them.

About 150 LD's. :thumbsup2
But they are upstairs in a storage cabinet.
I was just "scanning" the basement.

Of course, NOW the new "HD" DVD's are starting to be produced.

I don't look at the audio/video technologies as "FADS" (some are, I suppose) but a new WAY to enjoy the entertainment.
LD's were superior in quality to VHS/Beta.
DVD's are "better" than LD's.

HD DVD's will have higher resolution than "regular" (SD) DVDs.

The state-of-the-art changes so fast I hardly have time to make a "too high" investment in one technology before the newer ones come along.

Back to mp3's and iPods... they, in fact, do NOT have as high a quality as CD's... but their portablility of THOUSANDS of songs in a tiny package make them an amazing method of personal listening.

I agree.

HD-DVD is nice, especially for the price. The new $1,000 Sammy Blue Ray players don't have the same quality, at least with the initial batch of BRD transfers. The Sammy also has had issues outputting 1080p via HDMI to several TV's. Nice to meet another home theater and tech enthusiast around here. Do you frequent AVSFORUM? :thumbsup2

Regarding the Heelys, I definitely don't think they are as safe as normal walking, and I definitely worry about my daughter getting run into. The surface area of the contact patch on Heelys can in no way be as large as a normal shoe, and the added instability isn't going to help either. Bottom line: There's a time and place for everything, and Heely's are not appropriate for WDW.

Yes BUT, what are the odds of slipping on a marble in the mall? Pretty slim I would guess! I agree, they are probably no more dangerous than roller skates, but I for one have NEVER seen anyone roller skating in the mall or grocery store!

My point is the theory they are 'dangerous' or cause injury is bogus. MISUSE of them (by riding them in crowds, or generally being stupid) is what makes them annoying to people.

Just like skateboarding down the mall hall would be disruptive and shouldn't be allowed.. you can say the same for these things. But to go as far as to say they will cause long term injury.. I could say the same for breast implants.. but you don't see me calling for a ban on them :)

No, but I guess I should... see you over there some day soon.

I'm a video producer, shooter, editor, writer, and techie who still loves the "gear"... and the music... and the movies... and GOOD TV.

I do spend a lot of time on the audio and video production Q&A bulletin boards (creativecow.net and 2-pop.com).

And I need my DIS-time as well!

Very interesting post. I would be surprised if any thinking parent would allow his or her child to use those things anywhere at WDW. They are a hazzard for us walking adults, as well as the children using them.

Common decency, as well as common sense should keep them away from the resort.

Enjoy (and be safe too).

I don't know...I have definitely read posts from DISboard members about their kids' heelies. Using them at the mall is every bit as inappropriate as using them at WDW, and I have seen that posted on the DISboards also. Those parents were probably thinking, but were not considering the same aspects we are, I guess.

Putting on flameproof suit....

The freedom of wearing heelys ends at the beginning of my personal safety....ie....the length of the arm I am going to use to clothesline the first kid that goes zipping past me...at WDW or anywhere....just sick to death of children without limits....which seem to be just about all children.

Okay....everyone zap me!

In case any of you were following the other Heelys thread but were daunted by the 90+ posts, I thought I'd start a new thread about the e-mail I sent to WDW yesterday and the response I just received (I also posted this on the original thread).

I e-mailed WDW yesterday to ask about Heelys. Below is the response they sent me [I made it red], which included the text of my e-mail to them [I made it blue] (so you can all see that my letter was not "slanted" against Heelys). So here is the official response:

Dear Eric,

Thank you for contacting the Walt Disney World Resort.

While we appreciate your interest, please note due to safety concerns, shoes with wheels are not permitted inside any Walt Disney World Theme Park.

If you have questions or need further assistance, feel free to contact us.

Please include your full name, E-Mail address, and reservation number if applicable on all correspondence.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Gail Williams

Message:

I will be staying at POFQ in November with my family. I have read conflicting anecdotal information about whether or not shoes with wheels in them ("Heelys") are permitted inside the WDW theme parks.
I would like to know before we go, so I can prepare my kids in case they are not permitted to wear them inside the theme parks.

So, please answer my question: Are shoes with wheels ("Heelys") permitted insode WDW theme parks?

THANKS SO MUCH!

Debate solved. The official WDW stance on Heelys is now known, at least to DISers.

I am so glad to hear this, now if they would just do away with strollers!!! :dance3:

I'm sure you'll get flamed for this, but many of us feel the same way.

If someone in my family is knocked down, pushed or harmed in anyway by someone ROLLING around in a pair of Heely's, that person (and his/her parents) will get an earful from me. :scared1:

IF YOU WANT TO SKATE, GO TO A RINK NOT A THEME PARK!!!

I won't zap you but if I run into you in the parks I'll be happy to buy you a drink. (or a Mickey Bar)

Oh look, I'll be there at the same time as you!

I'll be happy to ask a cast member to insist you remove the wheels if I see you. *snarls* it is against the law in Florida for those things to be worn in theme parks, and if you are putting my family's safety in jeopardy, I'm not taking any chances you'll ruin my trip.

I am so glad that they aren't allowed at the parks BUT exactly what are they doing to make SURE that the Heely offending families are abiding by the 'laws'? If I see a kid wearing Heely's and a CM is notified and witnesses the kid using them, will anything be done? I've read on other threads about CMs not really doing anything when people are breaking the park rules. I understand that it can be daunting to approach some people and ask them to follow the posted rules. God knows how they may react! But still, a rule is a rule is a rule and if it's going to be in place then they need to back it up!!
I say take the shoes away from them, they can get it back at the end of their visit, and then they have to go into a gift shop and buy shoes! Way to make more money! :rotfl:

As far as getting rid of strollers, please know that not all of us stroller pushing people are so rude as to use our childs stroller as a battering ram! We will have two strollers with us and we try to be conscientious when using them. If I accidentally knock into someone, or need to get through a crowd to get to a washroom or something I always say sorry or excuse me. HOWEVER, there are times when people are walking and just stop short in front of me and they get a little nicked in the heels. I've had several people almost knock over my stroller in their rush and not looking. Those people I give the 'look' to...I save any angry outbursts for when they knock into my baby's stroller (he's 5 months), to me that is just being obnoxious and could hurt or scare the baby. And Mommy doesn't put up with that!!

So cut us stroller crowds a break, don't let a few bad apples ruin the bunch!

Strollers and ECV's are necessary; Heely's are not.

If they put up a sign stating that anyone observed using skates or skate shoes will be removed from the park, I imagine that would calm things down a bit. WDW probably needs to enforce this strongly for a few months to make it a non-issue.

I'm sure there is a time and place for Heely's, but at WDW is definitely not a good idea.

Marsha
