WDW says Heelys not permitted in Parks

I haven't been seeing any type of rules enforced in recent memory...smoking areas...heely's....cutting in line....dress code...

I guess the problem is that there really aren't enough CM's to enforce the rules...and even if they try (as I have seen) they have no back up and the "customers" just ignore them and do what they want anyway...

It has just become a very self centered and rude world out there....

I agree. It's very sad how people are in our society now. : :sad2:

In defense of parents whose kids have Heely's, not all of us are stupid parents. I think this thread is getting a little harsh. DD8 has a pair and I would NEVER let her wear them to school and I do control when and where she skates on them. She has worn them to the store however I do not let her roll on them if there are people around and she must stay close to me. We were actually in the grocery store last week and it had been raining outside and I told her not to even think about trying to skate in the store since her shoes were wet. If we were somewhere and my dd was told not to skate on her shoes by an employee, then she would not be doing it, period, and I don't care if she would be mad. I'm sure there are plenty of stupid parents out there but they are more than likely stupid whether their kids have on heely's or not. There are a lot of parents out there who don't pay attention to their children. Some people are going to be rude not matter what. I feel that kids wearing heelys at WDW are no worse then people who wear shirts with inappropriate sayings, people who wear way to revealing and innapropriate clothes, people who cut line, people in ECV's who run over people as well as people who cut off people in those, and more than anything people who smoke in non-smoking areas. I don't have a problem with Disney saying that they are not allowed and I will gladly refuse to let my dd wear them the next time we go. However, if they are going to enforce the rule enforce all the rules.

Sorry but I had to come to the defense that some of us are not bad parents just because our children have Heely's.

You mean like wearing high heels? I don't hear cries for banning hi-heel shoes due to injuries.

You would let a child with developing feet wear high heels? I sure as heck wouldn't! And yes, high heels are well-known to cause physical problems FAR beyond foot discomfort. I can't understand why anyone would choose to wear them, but that is just me. I mean, they look spiffy and all...but it's not worth the health cost, IMO.

Saw a few kids today at MK wearing those shoes with wheels.

I don't think the fact that someone allows their child to own a pair of Heelys makes them a stupid parent. I have a problem with a parent that will allow the child to skate/roll in an area that isn't intended for skating/rolling.

Why does a child NEED to skate/roll in a store? :confused3

If I had to choice, I'd rather see CMs enforce the Heely rule than worry about what people are wearing. A tacky shirt can't cause physical harm to anyone. However, a kid skating/rolling around can.

Kids wear them in dress-up all the time. You gonna scold all those little girls dressed up as cinderella in the park that they are ruining their future?

And yes, high heels are well-known to cause physical problems FAR beyond foot discomfort.

...yet you don't see a thread here calling for their ban based on the fact they are unhealthy.

There are tons of things we CHOOSE to do even tho they are not 100% perfect for you. Eating that burger.. leaning back in that chair.. etc. Basically there are tons of things we do which have 'risk'. But if you want to live in a bubble.. go head... the rest of us are going to live our lives.

"princess shoes" have a one inch heel--and are thick heels, I think we are talking about real high heeled shoes here--several inches and spiky.

Let me tell you, Heelys are the most fun things ever invented.

Not ONCE have I crashed into anyone. Has anyone actually crashed into you, or were you just afraid that they would? :confused3

It's very easy to stop. All you have to do is put your foot down and start walking. Some people might think some kid was about to crash into them, but they probably aren't.

Once you've practiced, it's as easy to roll as it is to walk. Seriously.

Parents who let their kids wear Heelys are NOT stupid. As long as they tell their kids when and where to do it, it's fine.

And flynnibus, thank you. You are 100% correct. We take risks all the time. I have the feeling that a lot more people are injured in car accidents than Heely accidents. Does the government ban Heelys? People fall off of bikes. They can hurt themselves pretty badly. Does the government ban bikes? Almost everything is dangerous or unhealthy in some way.

Heelys are not a safety concern IMHO. But, if Disney does not allow them, I will not wear them at Disney World. Case closed.

Actually...my sis was crashed into and had her foot stepped on by the dad who (beer in one hand) stepped over to jerk the kid up by the arm. At the time, my 5 y.o. daughter was walking with her, on the other side of her thankfully!

OK, I'm very sorry. But, anyone else? This is obviously a stupid parent, who lets his child crash into other people, and steps on people's feet. Not everyone is like that.

Um, okay. Thanks. I pointed out a few things you seem to have overlooked, and you get snarky with me? :sad2:

FWIW, I am a vegetarian, so I never eat burgers. :rotfl: I don't live in a bubble. I don't wear high heels and I would NEVER (addressing another poster) allow a child of mine to wear "Princess shoes" with heels. They aren't safe, IMO. Yes, we all take risks. Some fewer than others. If I see anyone wearing Heelys in the parks, I will report them, and hope they are kicked out (unless they remove the wheels). Period! :wizard:
If my son were old enough, sure I'd let him have Heelys. But he'd wear a helmet, elbow and knee protection, and use them in an appropriate area. Cars? Seatbelt/car seat. Bikes? Helmets and other protection. I really don't know what's so wrong about saying Heelys are not safe. THEY'RE NOT WITHOUT RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY. If you choose to take that risk, GREAT! But people (not you, just people in general) getting upset because others point out the dangers...what?!?!?! :bitelip:

We were at Disney in late Dec/early Jan. We were walking to the buses outside of MGM after eating at Mama's. A large group with a number of kids in heelys were spread out taking the whole sidewalk so I stepped to the right of the tree (bus side) , my kids followed me and then DH. One of the group in heelys, a girl around 10/11 yrs old, grabbed the tree and swung around it into me. She ended up on the ground wearing my no longer delious diiner. I certainly did not want to lose my dinner, as those were my carbs for the marathon the next day.

I teach fifth grade and can honestly say that I 100% DETEST Heelys. They are not permitted in my school and should not be allowed at WDW parks or other public places such as malls, etc. Unfortunately, parents don't follow the guidelines set and allow their children to wear them.

I was at WDW last week and was appalled at the number of children wearing these wretched shoes. While I have not read all of the replies to this thread, I stand my ground that they are dangerous especially in public places. In my classroom, if they are seen, I pop the wheels out and WDW should be doing the same.

Where were the parents? If there's an adult enforcing the rules, it's fine.

We know that. And that's what the Heelys boxes say. That's what the tags on the shoes say say. That's what the sticker on the shoes say. We know. That's why we wear helmets and elbow and knee pads.

Heelys are fine, as long as they are used at the right place, time, with supervision and rules, and protection. I don't get why you guys are just assuming that all Heelys users are horrible because one idiot crashed into you. Heelys are great, just when they are used properly.

Oh look, I'll be there at the same time as you!

I'll be happy to ask a cast member to insist you remove the wheels if I see you. *snarls* it is against the law in Florida for those things to be worn in theme parks, and if you are putting my family's safety in jeopardy, I'm not taking any chances you'll ruin my trip.

Huh? I offered to buy the guy a drink who is going to knock the kid with wheels into the nearest lake. You will never ever catch me or any of my traveling group with those horrible things.

You know, I read posts like this and wonder how I ever survived.. I rode my bike with no helmet with my best friend on the handle bars! *gasp* I roller skated on uneven pavement with no guard pads and fell and got scrapes and broke my leg! *gasp* I rode in the front seat of the car before I was 13 and learned to pump gas at 8!! *faints*

Anyway, I digress... I'm really less concerned about heelies (a 8 year old slamming into me is going to do more damage to them than me when they fall backwards) then getting my eye poked out by wayward umbrellas....

I have to say Im glad thats WDW policy although I have encountered a few rude kids on those things in the parks. My own DD wants a pair but as far as Im concerned there is a place to wear skates and thats at home around your neighborhood streets or a skating rink, not just randomly anywhere when you dont feel like walking. Kids today have become lazy with the motorized scooters and video games.
I have been shoved out of the way and almost run over by kids with those darn things on but Im sure WDW has that rule because of the liability as well as everyones safety within the park.

Uh... you do realize that skating is excercise? And DO NOT get me started with the "kids today" stuff.
