Something amazing must be going on here, maybe the weather is just right or something, but there is a veritable explosion of fireflies in our front garden and parkway strip. Our neighbor next door to the east of us, also ripped up all her grass and went with natural plantings and between the two houses, the fireflies are putting on a light show tonight. The funny thing is that they are not around any of the other yards. I guess they must be happy fireflies.

I have never seen so many in my life before.

How cool. I don't think I've ever seen one.

Now, Lightning Bugs ( as we call Fireflies) are one thing I really miss about the midwest! We don't have them here in Florida.

I will enjoy them this weekend when we are at the wedding in Walnut, IL!

But you have really big flies so it makes up for it!

Aw, you're so lucky! That's good news though. If you just got yours, maybe they're still sending more out. Maybe they just ran out of them earlier and are now sending to everybody else. Well, I can hope, right? ;)

Hope is a good thing! I don't actually need it, but hearing everybody else getting it just makes me feel left out :(

We got an offer on the house yesterday that we accepted ::yes:: with just a couple of minor changes in our counter offer that do not involve money, so they likely will accept it. WOO HOO!!! :woohoo: Now the troubles....we would have to be out of the house in 3 1/2 weeks and one of those weeks we are traveling to MT and ID. Oh my!! Time to get those closets cleaned out and packed up I think! So, that means I can retire in 5 weeks and 2 days!!! :hyper: :cool1:  :woohoo:

Fantastic news! We have to get moving and get our house ready to sell too.

Oh, but you will go. How could you not go with Bubba, Me, Ken, Shannon, Susie, John and I know there will be others.

::yes:: ::yes:: Kicking and screaming if necessary.

Resistance if Futile. :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I love that attitude! Alaska here we come! (or Hawaii or Japan - I'm flexible)

Monica - sounds like you are a fantastic aunt!

You took time out from Wii to chat :scared1:

Absolutely have to head to bed. Migraine meds are making me.....but I'm sure they'll make me wide awake in about 3 hours. Crazy, but if it makes my head stop pounding, I'm OK with that. :thumbsup2

Goodnight all!

Talk to you in a few hours :lmao:

I've never seen any.:( But I bet it is a beautiful sight. I would love to see some one day.

I never knew that fireflies were a Midwestern thing.

They were truly spectacular tonight. In the 19 years we've had this house, we've never seen as many as there were tonight.

I wish I could bottle some up and send them to you.

That was the sweetest thing I've ever heard

OK - so now the firefly/lightening bug extravaganza outside our house this evening piqued my curiosity. Sukie wondered why they light up and I said that I think they're talking to each other.

It was enough to send me to the Internet to look it up. Here's what I found:
WHY DO LIGHTNING BUGS FLASH?

Flashing Lightning Bugs are trying to attract mates. Among most but not all species of North American Lightning Bugs, males fly about flashing while females perch on vegetation, usually near the ground. If the female sees a flasher and she's ready to mate she responds by flashing right after the male's last flash. A short flash dialogue takes place as the male flies closer and closer, and then, if all goes well, they mate.

Little did we know that was going on. So, it looks like the firefly spectacular outside our house this evening was some sort of wild firefly/lightning bug sex party.

I think in the morning I'm going to go out to check for and clean up lots of tiny little empty beer bottles, and itsy bitsy empty bottles of vodka and tequila, not to mention hundreds of tiny cigarette butts.

These cakes look great. :worship: to Shannon. She is a super mom. I did make a sponge bob cake for Brooke one year but it was easy because he is square!

The funky shapes are just the cake pan. When making these ones, I realized I don't have a plain regular cakepan. So I had to use the largest flower one for the 16-yr old. Once it was decorated, it didn't look so much like a flower. I love shaped cakepans. I've got 4 layer flower shape, T-shirt shaped, open book shape. They make it fun!

I know but you'll be dragging her too. She wants to be hot like me :lmao:

Don't be modest - we all want to be hot like you::yes::

:yay: Tokoyo Disneyland:yay: Tokoyo Disneyland:yay:

I would love to go there.

How about an around the world cruise? :sail: Start in Florida, take one of the NEW ships through the NEW locks of the Panama Canal, stop at LA and go to Disneyland for an excursion, on to Japan and Tokoyo Disneyland, then to Hong Kong for that Disney park, on around India, :boat:through the Suez Canal, see something famous in Egypt and Italy, go to the fancy church in Barcelona Spain, across the Atlantic and end at WDW.

OK, I need to be independently wealthy.:rotfl2:

Jan :earsgirl:

Way to dream! Sounds fantastic - if I win a ridiculously large amount in a lottery, I'll buy a ship and we can all go::yes:: Of course I don't even buy lottery tickets, so its pretty unlikely, but dreaming is fun:lmao:

Glad to hear she made it home safely. And doesn't it sound wonderful to live and travel all over europe. Vacation in london and croatia. Here, we're like...going to florida and texas. Just doesn't have the same ring!:rotfl:

Its all relative - to them Florida, Texas, California etc sound cool :)

Did everyone see one of the trailers for Tink? She put pixie dust on the fireflies to make them glow.

That's how my mom was. But we used to have those orange aspirins that tasted so good you wanted to eat them even when you didn't have a fever.

I loved those children's aspirin when I was a kid. I used to sneak one occasionally when I was about 6. Now can't buy them. Not supposed to give children aspirin because of risk of Reye's Syndrome. I wish they would make the children's tylenol in that orange flavour instead of bubblegum ::yes::

The only fruit he'll eat is pineapple chunks, and the only sandwich he'll eat is hard salami & cheese. Unless we're at Subway and then he'll eat turkey & cheese for some reason. He won't eat beef or fish either, only chicken. Those pre-cooked rotisserie chickens are a big hit. The only vegetable he'll eat is green beans, and he wants those with EVERY lunch & dinner. Strange kid.

Have you tried wax beans (same as green beans, just yellow in colour)? Have you tried frozen vs canned veggies? Some people seem to like canned peas and hate frozen or vice versa? Just throwing ideas out there :)

Some of us HAD to leave early in order for others to be able to "cut loose"... Right Jon??!?:cool2:

And that's why it was on Mother's Day - so all the Mom's could go get wild ::yes:: Thank goodness it was a day at sea next, I needed a nap that day (probably more than DD3 did ;) )

I love it! I sometimes eat it with a spoon. ::yes::

Peanut butter by the spoonful - Yum! My girls love it too!

I'm not a huge fan of football but that made me cry a little. Jon makes us dress up in Browns gear so I feel for Shannon and the kids :lmao:

Don't feel sorry for us - the dressing up is part of the fun! I even have orange eyeshadow that the girls & I wear - team colours all the way! The girls like going to football - get to dress up, wear makeup, tattoos, eat junk food, yell and shout! Its great!

You took time out from Wii to chat :scared1:

Yup - and I'm finally caught up! :woohoo:

That's how we are for baseball. Not that we love it but it is a million dollars to go to the Super Bowl. Are you rich or is it different?

Now don't tell me you participated in the Summer of Love?

I was just a wee one back then... I think I participated in the summer of Sesame Street... wait... that wasn't until '69...:rotfl:

what size is your motorhome? we are looking for one for a rental to take to the track in Santa Maria.

Just invite them along Nan... I'm sure they will be looking for someplace to roam!!!

I'M FINALLY IN ONE!!! (at least my hair is... :confused3 )

Yeah, if there was ever a group of people who looked like they were having FUN, it'd be this one, fer sure!:lmao: :rotfl2:

We tried Deb... we really did...it was past my bed time...

HI MARILYN!!!
(I missed out on yesterday... was kinda busy...)

Well, here's something worse: he doesn't like peanut butter either! I've never heard of a kid who doesn't eat PB&J. Tyler's just a weirdo.

Me either... or mustard or Dill pickles... the rest I'm pretty much ok with... except tripe... YUK...

not sleeping here either. i just spent an hour or more looking at border collies on petfinder. no, we are not getting another dog. i'm just sad. missing casey:sad: this is me now so i'm going to bed.

thanks Deb & Marilyn. We have Jenny Rose, she is a 9 year old Border Collie, so we won't get another dog any time soon.

   That's a beautiful name...

Today was our company picnic. They had buses to take everyone to the park at 11:00 AM for a barbeque and games.

I ended up staying at work, because we had a crisis with a software release that is supposed to move into production on Monday night.

My boss (who was sympathetic to me) said that I had to attend the picnic. That I could eat and then come back.

I said that I wouldn't get back until after 2PM and I'd lose valuable time. I also told her that I refused to work on the weekend and give up time where I had plans, because I had to waste time going to a picnic I could care less about.

The choice was either I be allowed to stay and get work done, or I attend the picnic and we miss our deadline.

She really was on my side. I spoke to her boss the CIO and told him I would not be at the picnic and why. It was thus up to the executives as to whether the picnic was a higher priority than our customers.

So, I stayed at my desk which was fine. I'm not a fan of forced fun and have an extremely difficult time being sociable with people I don't feel sociable about.

(I know it must be a shock to think of me as not being sociable).

I do have a team that reports to me, but they are all young guys and were really looking forward to the picnic, games and softball game. I could have made one or more of them stay, but I couldn't see taking away from them something that they were clearly excited about, and I wasn't.

One of my guys felt really bad and was hovering over me fretting about my ability to test something. He turned 24 this week and I am the same age as his father (well, his father is technically 5 months older than me).

I finally said, "Ed, leave me alone. I was testing software before you were born and before PC's were born."

Actually, I had a nice, productive time by myself.

I used to do that too... I temped at one company one summer and they used to go in early to have part of Friday off - because of traffic, I used to come in later and I didn't mind staying on Friday afternoon when the place was very quiet and I had it all to myself.

That's a great story! I would have done the same thing! I'd much rather get done with something important than eat BBQ!

Have a nice week.

We are leaving tomorrow morning to fly to Moline and attend Chuck's nephew's wedding....I am really looking forward to it! It will be outdoors, in his sister's new hosta garden which has lots of lovely trees and shade, and she's been working so hard to make it beautiful. The wedding will be in the evening and they are getting bales of hay to sit on.......It's going to be very fancy! They are even getting fabric to cover the bales of hay! Now that's FIRST CLASS at an outdoor wedding.....also there will be a big tent with a DJ and music and ......Chuck's favorite.....a keg of beer! OH BOY:banana:

I hope the weather cooperates.....we will go to Angelo's Pizza on Sunday and then come home on Monday....a real whirwind trip!

Today I was supposed to work from 7:30am to 12 noon, but at 5am, my mom called from her house in Ellenton, FL. She had called the parametics because she thought she was having a heart attack......her blood pressure was SO HIGH yesterday at the DR.'s office, and I think she just fussed and fumed about it all night until she got herself all worked up.

I called off of work, packed a weekend bag, and tore off to see her. I didn't know how long I would have to stay, or anything......Luckily, they pumped her full of something to lower her blood pressure, and she was asleep and ready to go home by the time I got there.

She's ok, but she's finally going to move over here to live closer to me so I don't have to drive so far in an emergency.

:yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay:

  Connie... I had to yell at Mom because she decided to stop taking her meds before the cruise and then wondered why she was practically cripled when we got to CA... I won that argument when she couldn't move very well anymore...

Wow it sure is weird reading the quotes and then the original post!!!

I would blame it on the alcohol but I can't because I haven't had any yet. Just sat down to watch the football game. Haven't even cracked the beer open yet. I'm so glad football season has started!! :thumbsup2 :cool1: :thumbsup2
footballsmiley.gif

So Ken... is that Football or FOOTBALL????

OK...I just have to post to see where it shows up! :lmao:

I was experience the twilight zone time warp over on the Planky trip report thread....very bizarre.

.

& that surprises you???

I can't stand baseball. Much to the disappointment of my grandfather. Although I keep telling him he obviously doesn't like baseball either because he is a BlueJays fan.

Yesterday was opening night for the Canadian Football League. And I'm a HUGE CFL fan. My team (the BC Lions) was on the field last night. I can't say they played because it was a pretty sad performance and a losing cause. But at least the season is now underway!

The CFL unveiled their new ad campaign for the season and this is the awesome video for it: (I know most of you don't care, but bear with me as I am a HUGE CFL fan - it brought tears to my eyes!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BS1jCfg7Qxc

And realistically, my passion for the CFL has been spread down to my wife and girls and I'm damn proud of it! :cool1:

This pic was at the Grey Cup (the Canadian Football Superbowl) last year

I love the outfits... especially the tiaras... but hey... I am a queen!!!

Oh, and I've been 'dropped' off the boards (needed to re login that is) three times in the last 90 minutes).

.

That happened to Planky alot today too... he's trying to not take it too personal...
