Wasn't there a thread on Odd Neighbors? Have I got a story!

I can't wait for an update!!! I had something similiar happen a few years ago, but it had involved my clothes. I confronted her on several occasions, but never got closure. I hope she does.

I would get the police or a lawyer involved.

Perhaps I'm missing something or have simply misunderstood, but......being that taking another person's mail is a FEDERAL OFFENSE, why not simply report what has transpired to the Postmaster and allow him to handle the situation?

Another one patiently (ok, maybe not so patiently :hyper: ) waiting for an update.

Everyone keeps asking for an update. I can tell you from my past experience with this type of person, that the letter will have NO effect. She will stick to her original story.

ok--i'm freaking out about the federal offense of opening someone else's mail part. i was going through my stack of mail opening without thought. after i opened one, i realized it wasn't mine.

of course it had to be something personal coming from a bank with financial info on it. i didn't read any of it, just stuck the letter back in the envelope and wrote a note of apology on the envelope.

i'm planning on putting it back in my mail box so my postal carrier will take it back.

am i going to go to jail for this?! seriously, can this person get angry enough about me opening up her mail that she could cause trouble?

Maps, not sure about your situation. Why don't you call your local post office and find out. If it was delivered to your address, then maybe you are fine?????

I dunno but i'd imagine that as it was a genuine mistake and you've re-posted off the letter if there were any repercussions it would be pretty obvious that you weren't trying to hide your actions and that you haven't used the information to benefit yourself or commit fraud or anything.

So although TECHNICALLY you may have broken the law- i doubt anything will come of it as there was no malicious intent, it's quite different to deliberately opening someone elses mail and stealing the contents!

You'll be fine!

That is exactly what I thought upon reading the last post about the letter. She is in too deep to come clean. You should get a lawyer to write a letter, but she will ignore that until threat of court. You can at least know she is squirming about the letter!

I did the same with a letter for a previous owner of my house, and there was bad blood (they tried to sue me for different reasons) but I just wrote a note on the envelope stating my apologies for opening by mistake. A funny sideline is the letter threatening to sue for a playset they abandoned came two weeks later and I thought I was in trouble for the mail thing!

OK, Microcell,
You've got me curious now...what was the "bad blood" about?

Whoa...what a nut case! Where's the update, I kept reading the posts hoping I'd see an update?!

Last Sat. I was at the diner by our house and the mailman came in to drop off some mail to the owner, he saw DH and I and said "oh I have a package for you, I didn't want to leave it on your porch, I'll bring it in for you." So DH and I said Thank you, when he gave us the pkg and we continued eating our breakfast. As we were leaving, we almost forgot the pkg and when DH went back to get it, he saw that it WASN'T even addressed to me...it was the wrong address, the wrong name. The mailman thought I was someone else! I know we should have looked at the pkg before he left, but we were in the mist of talkin bout our upcoming trip, we were so into it, we just said THANK YOU and he was in a rush!

We tried looking for him but we couldn't find him, and it was a pkg from Amazon.Com w/ a delivery confirmation. So we drove up to our post office and dropped it off w/ the clerk behind the counter. I hope it reached the proper person!!!
