I have found a couple of models of Kenmore washing machines, one Magtag, and a Samsung which are all vying for the coveted role of being Green Tea's Washing Machine. Do you have any dirt on any of the contestants? Love them, hate them, have to call the doctor for all the annoying little problems, been together for 20 years with never a fight?

(All are high efficiency front loaders)

I have the Kenmore Elite He4T set and I love them. Have had them for almost 2 years - never a problem.

I used to love Maytag, but the last two Maytag appliances (dryer and dishwasher) we purchased left much to be desired. Our next purchase will definitely not be Maytag.

This is exactly the info I want to know!! I have had Kenmore for 17 years and they have been very good. The notes about Maytag make me think I might lean toward the Kenmore units. I have found over time brands I trusted have failed me also. I was a big Frigidare fan, because that is what my mother had. Bought new stuff for my kitchen recently and the Frigidare has not been good. Many service calls.

I had the old maytag neptune. One of the first wave of the newer front loaders.
Boy was it crummy.
So many people had problems with it there was a class action law suit.
Now I have an LG
I like it.

Yep, Maytag - NOT what it used to be!!!

I have a Whirlpool duet-sport (the small duet frontloaders)
I do NOT recommend!!!

I believe Kenmore's are the Whirlpool washer and dryer.
I have heard good reviews...
Maybe the full sized models are much better than my 'sport' washer and dryer???

I would give anything if I had followed my first choice and purchased the Bosch washer and dryer I had wanted!!!!

One thing you might look for....
You might want a dryer-drum that is a full rotating drum...
On many models, it is not a full rotating drum... just the walls turn...
Mine is like this and it sucks...
Doesn't tumble as well...
Constant friction between the stationary front and back faces causes both wear on the clothes, and wear on the drum 'finish'.

A FULL rotating drum... especially stainless, might be well worth the additional cost!!!

That's the washer I currently have, the Neptune. Avoid it at all costs! I've been lucky so far but I know the time is coming when it dies. I found out about the lawsuit too late to join, but I would have if I'd known about it!

I'm leaning towards an LG or Samsung next time. There's an LG that, if you stack them, you can move the controls down on the dryer right above the controls for the washer.

Maytag, your line has been DIScontinued. You will be forced to leave the appliance showroom immediately.

The Bosch-I went in today thinking that would be the best, but the appliance man said the others are "just as good....no difference...... Humm. Now, maybe I need to look at those again. I did see the Fiske & Paykel. They may be high end, but boy the model I saw looked and felt cheap. Have you ever felt them?

I also thought LG would be great, but I looked at a few reviews and they all said, across the lines, that water starts to smell inside and the clothes get a moldy smell. Have you LG folks ever noticed or heard of that?

The Maytag front loader definitely had the mildewy thing going on. Big time.
So when it was time to shop for a new washer -I was very leery about getting a front loader and was shopping for top loaders.

But I found out the top loader that I was used to really no longer exists. The energy saving laws have changed all washers.
I needed the big capacity and liked the idea of a front loader for washing comforters ect... so I decided on the LG.
I did some reading about them and yes if you do not leave the door open they do mildew. I think ALL front loaders to this. So I leave the door open and occasionally make sure I do a load with bleach.
I also clean the rubber gasket periodically. With the front loaders you also need to make sure it is level (if not they are really noisy) and use the HE detergent -always.
So far I have had the LG for a year. Ocassionally I get the smell -but not the visable mold and strong smell I got with the Maytag Neptune.

Good luck!!
Hope this helps:)

I just bought the LG Steam Washer & Dryer and am in love with them both. Both have steel drums and rated number one by Consumer Reports! I got the Cherry Red! I would not trade them for anything. I did do my homework for several months prior to purchasing them and am very pleased! :thumbsup2

Do you still have the consumer reports info. Was LG rated highly for all models? The reviews on Sears own website for their steam washer were abysmal. thinking LG or Bosch now.

I had to chime in of this. We bought a Maytag washer and dryer. HORRIBLE! We had the repair man (no he is not relaxing like on the ad, ha ha) out 3-4 times. They never worked right. We then got so sick of it that we went to Sears and bought a Kenmore washer and dryer and have never had any problems (knock on wood!). Sorry, Maytag, but I would never buy another one.

I have a Bosch front loader and I love it.

Consumer Reports rates the LG Tromm steam washer as the best front load washer.
Next in line are:
LG WM0642H[W]
Whirlpool Duet steam
Miele
Kenmore elite HE5t
Frigidaire Gallery
LG WM2016C[W]
Samsung
Maytag Epic
Whirpool Duet HT
then the Bosch

the bottom of the barrel is:
Speed Queen
Whirpool Duet sport
Kenmore HE2 plus

For dryers:
LG DLE5977[W]
Kenmore Elite HE5 steam
Ge profile harmony
GE DBVH512EF[WW]
Kenmore Elite Oasis
LG Tromm DLE8377[W]

the bottom of the barrel is:
miele touchtronic
Whirlpool WED5500S[Q]
Staber (never heard of it)

Generally Bosch seems to be in the middle of the ratings, but the price is kinda high compared to some of the higher rated....

We are in the market for a washer and dryer as well so I am interested to hear people's opinions.

I just ordered the LG WM0642H, the second one in the rating.:thumbsup2 I started yesterday thinking I wanted LG, then shied away after my first reading of the smelly problem, then in the end all the others seemed to have bad reviews, so back to the LG. I can use bleach on smells a lot easier than I can rebuild an electronic panel.:)

Thank you all so much for your help! I am excited. Of course, this is the ONE model I have never actually seen. I liked the other LG's I saw. This is a little different because it has controls in the traditional place which makes it a non stackable front loader.

Home Depot is delivering it in a little over a week. And I went through Upromise so in addition to the store's 10% off sale, I also get 3% back as cash in the college account. (I joined Upromise thanks to recommendations here. The DIS is the best!)
