Warning! We had a theft last week!

Ok, I know people are the same everywhere and this is no reflection on Disney. I just want to remind everyone to be smarter than we were last week. Two of our credit card accounts were compromised. Since neither card is missing, we think the thief simply took the needed info off the cards. The cards were in my husband's wallet which was in a bag but not locked up. The charges were made in a town in Fla. for large sums at a Home Depot. Fortunately the fraud departments with the credit companies did their jobs and caught it quickly. So tonight is being spent canceling any cards in our wallets just to be sure. We won't make the mistake of not locking them up again.

We had that happen to us a few years ago. Someone bought gas in 2 different areas with our card. I believe it was taken from our account because after we check in, our wallets get locked up and the cards don't come out, we use cash. It had to be taken from the computer system. I am now in the habit of checking our bank account every single day....sad isn't it??:sad2:

This isn't always possible. We have teens that are usually out after we're getting ready for bed. And I get up between 4 and 5 am to go run, so the deadbolt is off then too.

I've had someone walk into our room (at ssr) in the middle of the day when I was doing laundry but everyone else was at the pool (so again, no deadbolt--I planned to take a nap). She was carrying her lunch! So I knew she was just looking for someplace to eat. She had the nerve to be grumpy at ME for being there. "why you no in the park"--no kidding, that's what she said. It was the second incident that trip. We spoke with a manager and have never stayed at ssr again.

Last october at VWL we had a similiar experience, though right after check-in. We arrived around 7PM, checked in and went to our 2BR villa. A mousekeeping cart was blocking the door which I found strange as I have never seen them out that late.

When I opened the door, a lady was sitting at the table having dinner and another one just walked in from the kitchen, also with a plate full of food. :-) The one at the table just turned, waved her arms and said "Room not ready".

I was so surprised that I just closed the door and went back to the lobby. They didn't know anything about housekeeping still being in the room. We then got assigned a different villa which had a nice view of the lake. While the first one was very close to the elevator, it was towards the bus stop so I was actually happy that they moved us.

So far our credit cards have not been compromised but last week on June 1st we were staying at POFQ and my DD's laptop was stolen out of the room. I know your first thought is why was it in the room when you weren't but I had placed a request for no one to enter the room unless we were present including no maid service. I did this because on the first night we were there my DD and DS said they thought someone had gone through their things while we were at dinner. On the first night nothing was missing but I called the front desk anyway because the kids were uncomfortable. Then the next day nobody enterd the room and everything was all good. When we came back the third night one of the 2 rooms we had was made up by the maid and the laptop was gone. I called Disney security and the Orange County Sheriff's office and filed a report. Disney moved us home to SSR and found out the maid was the only one who entered the room. She was arrested and they are looking into refunding the cost of the laptop.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. We also had mousekeeping come into our room, make the bed & refresh towels at POFQ during our last stay there, even though I called mousekeeping the minute we got to the room and declined service until after we checked-out & we kept the "do not disturb" tag on our door during our entire stay.

It was an uneasy feeling to come back to the room, see the "do not disturb" tag on our door & open the door to find that someone had been in the room.

I'm amazed at these stories of people finding mousekeeping taking lunch & dinner breaks in rooms that are assigned to guests...and then for mousekeeping to seem po'd that you're there - unreal!

I've walked in on more than one occassion and had housekeeping sitting on the couch watching tv with drinks in hand, etc...this is while we were occupying the room. I too keep the Do Not Disturb sign on now at all times until we are there when they come in.

It's not a resort thing, it's a people thing. Just because someone works at Disney doesn't mean that they aren't a thief or sex offender or that they don't take breaks in our rooms.

On check out day we were in and out of our room. When we went back for our final check, a maintenance man was sitting on the sofa, drinking a soda, watching TV. I have never seen someone move so fast, he was gone in literally a blink of an eye.

:earsboy: Bill

:scared1: Oh I would be po'd!!!!!! What do you do & what do they say or do?

the cell phone companies have contibuted to this problem. I's not hard to modify a card reader phone so that when your card is swiped the information is stored on it or transmitted to another location when the clone cards are made. we recently caught a customer using what was basically a generic card with a magnetic stripe on it to purchase large quantities of cigarettes. When the cashier asked to see the card the customer bolted from the store.

And to echo what a PP said....it's not Disney, it's the person that is dishonest. They pervade every corner of the world and business.

:flower3:, thank you op for coming forward.

note, we were there over the holidays & one night we had
a surprise/strange visitor that walked in on us. now the official
dvc response was a "turn down " offer. however, when we
called the desk , they were not aware. also we have done
several dcl cruises. we are familiar with turn down services,& this
was strange in being so late [ we were already, "ready"
to go to bed.] he tap lightly & before i could get to the door,
he was waking on in .& he had a very surprise look on his face.

now reading about your problem, makes me wonder. also there
were other things we saw going on late @ night that "caught
our attentions" for safety.

I always use the dead bolt.
