Warning! We had a theft last week!

Can this issue be partially addressed by online checkin where you don't give a CC to the front desk? After that we put all CCs in the safe and never use them in Disney. Only the room key is needed.

Unless there is some proof, that someone was in the room, there is no way to know whether it happend there or elsewhere.

As myself and others have stated, your card does not have to be seen to be stolen.

:flower3:, thank you op for coming forward.

note, we were there over the holidays & one night we had
a surprise/strange visitor that walked in on us. now the official
dvc response was a "turn down " offer. however, when we
called the desk , they were not aware. also we have done
several dcl cruises. we are familiar with turn down services,& this
was strange in being so late [ we were already, "ready"
to go to bed.] he tap lightly & before i could get to the door,
he was waking on in .& he had a very surprise look on his face.

now reading about your problem, makes me wonder. also there
were other things we saw going on late @ night that "caught
our attentions" for safety.

you are worried about saftey and yet you are ready for bed and your door latch and deadbolt is not on. :confused3

On 2 different occasions we have had our CC skimmed by a CM working at the Front Desk at WDW. Once at BWV and once at BCV. Last year a CM was caught skimming who worked at SSR and OKW.

Skimming is when your card is read by a device and the info is captured. The thief will either sell the info or use it to clone a card and use the card at gas stations and other stores who have a liberal security policy which doesn't require a signature. Home Depot doesn't require signatures on purchases below $50.

The CC company isn't out any money, they make the merchant pay the fraudulent charges by issuing them a charge back.

If the thief did enter your room, Disney will have the access info in their card reader system.

boy~ oh boy! you sounded like my wife.

yes, i heard it from her too. but after all day @ the park , and
getting ready for the fireworks, it was forgotten.

I am so glad you caught this early. With our Europe trip coming up it is time for me to remember that this can happen anywhere. When traveling do get online and check accounts. Use a secure web connection and keep track.

Sorry this has happened to you.

Just curious, did you figure this out or did Disney catch them and then notify you?

We just had a CC fraud charge caught by Chase - first time ever. They did try a minimal charge first to test the account, and the larger charge was denied (it was an online purchase and my guess is that they didn't have the security code.)

It certainly has made me more cautious and we've had two businesses have laptops stolen with our info on them in the past couple years. Why any employee is allowed to take a laptop out with thousands of folks SSNs in them and leave them in their car to be stolen is beyond me.

We were a BCV a few years ago and there was a couple at the pool with a small child. I was staring out the window and it started to rain. The couple walked over to the clean towels and stuffed a baby carrage full of towels and headed for the parking lot. They were swimming in the quit pool and not even a guest there.

The BWV and BCV skimming occurred a year apart and I noticed the activity before anyone else. The cards were only used at the Front Desk at BWV and BCV and each time local fraudulent charges were made within a couple of days. In both cases I notified Disney Security and in both cases they took the position that I couldn't prove that it happened at Disney. I am guessing that they want to protect their image and possible legal issues. There were other reports of CC fraud at Disney around the same time.

Online check in is supposed to remove the possibility of employee theft at Disney due to the fact that CM's never need to touch the Guests CC.

:lmao: Get in the habit of doing it every time you come in, not just when going to bed.

:thumbsup2 to your wife.

So technically I should not have to physically give them the card if I do online check-in? That would be a good reason then to do it. Thanks for the tip!

at a restaurant in FL and by the time Discover shut it down $25,000 had been run up on it in 24 hours. I dumped Discover and went with Visa who have been diligent about protecting m account and calling me to verify unusual charges.

Disney is no different from any other business. They have dishonest CM's and most likely they have been placed there specifically to clone card info and pass it on. The waitress that cloned my card is in federal prison along with a ring of 40 people who were caught across the country.

I never put charging privleges on my room either at the front desk or on line but if there is a dishonest CM at a restaurant when you use your card you could be exposed.

The FBI told me that anytime your card is out of your sight you are at risk. The waitress had her own card reader on her hip and swiped everyone she waited on cards. It camn happen in a second!

Maybe we should all go back to carrying travelers checks and cash....

That is correct. If the online system is running correctly, the front desk can see that you have a card on file, but can not see the numbers using online check-in.

This isn't always possible. We have teens that are usually out after we're getting ready for bed. And I get up between 4 and 5 am to go run, so the deadbolt is off then too.

I've had someone walk into our room (at ssr) in the middle of the day when I was doing laundry but everyone else was at the pool (so again, no deadbolt--I planned to take a nap). She was carrying her lunch! So I knew she was just looking for someplace to eat. She had the nerve to be grumpy at ME for being there. "why you no in the park"--no kidding, that's what she said. It was the second incident that trip. We spoke with a manager and have never stayed at ssr again.

Your story and others like it are the reason I do online check in and then charge everything we buy on-site to the room with the KTTW card.

I admit I am a bit paranoid, but so far that extra caution has served me well. I hate it when a server disappears with my credit card!

I just called the front desk at Beach Club and they transferred me to security. My story is identical to yours- we stayed at BCV a week ago- the card was in my wallet in my room. Not the card I used to check in with- it was just along as a backup.
