WARNING**Senseless poll...Cornrow braids....holiday fashion faux pas or not?

What do you think of the cornrow braids so many get when they are on holidays?

  • Love 'em and get them whenever we go away

  • Like them only on younger people

  • Not a fan of them at all..but they do give me a good laugh

  • Extremely tacky...looks totally foolish on most adults

Quick question:

Is there anyone other than myself who think cornrow braids are really tacky on adults?!

We went on holidays to the Riviera Maya and all of these adult woman were getting braids! On our way back home, the airport was packed with holiday goers braided beyond belief...

All I could think of was that episode of "Friends" when they go to the Bahamas(?) for a convention of Ross' and Monica gets her hair braided...she tosses/swings her head and hits anyone within a 5 foot radius with her braids and the beads! :lmao:

It is just such a blatant, tacky way of saying "Hey look at me--I WAS ON HOLIDAYS!!"

Don't get me totally wrong...I do like them on most younger girls and there may be the very odd younger woman but otherwise :sad2:

Edited to add: That this poll is purely for fun and to find out others opinions...who knows I could be the only one not lovin' the cornrows!! :teeth:

On white women who went on Holiday in Jamacia- tacky
On black young girls or women - not tacky (actually very pretty. I love it when black women put red highlights in their hair or extensions and then braid it, it looks really exotic without being over the top)

To each his/her own :confused3 I think most people look weird with cornrows. It accentuates the roundness of their face and it can make them look like their head is too small. But, hey! If they like and and can pay for it who am I so tell them not to!

:thumbsup2 BINGO! If they don't usually wear their hair that way, then yes.

It's just something fun to do on vacation. I would assume it's not something they would do in everyday life and probably take them out a day or two after returning home. I don't get what the big deal is.

I don't like cornrows on anyone. Like another poster said it makes their head look wierd. Furthermore, I think it's fad and I wish it would pass.

They aren't tacky!! It is something different and fun, especially on a vacation. I got mine done in the Bahamas and kept it in for about 1 1/2 weeks. Maybe it wasn't the best style for me, but hey, I liked it and my friends and family thought it was neat.

What's wrong w/ looking like you have been on vacation when you have? When we go on vacation we always wear our new t-shirts home. We come home w/ a tan when we have been somewhere sunny and warm. I don't go on vacation every week, so I am excited about going and I still have that excitment on the way home.

Well......as an almost 40-something white woman, I have to say I got them for the first time this past February when we were in Ft Myers, FL. It may well become part of my winter vacation EVERY year.

I have poker, stick, straighter than straight hair that also happens to be VERY soft and slippery. Pulling it back to help stay cool never usually lasts more than half the day, and then I'm being driven crazy by my flyaway hair.

I got a half head of braids done, and did not give my hair a second thought for the rest of the week.

Would I wear them day to day at home, nope, probably not. But I really liked not having to deal with my hair on vacation.

I had my daughters done. OMGosh it made the mornings easier! She has thick wavy/curly hair, that must be tamed! It was a treat on vacation to not have to fuss with it! (She is 6, btw)

To each their own I guess. I don't see anything wrong with it all all. My SIL got hers done in Jamaica and loved it. She did it so she wouldn't have to mess with her hair in the heat and humidity during her vacation. Who am I or anyone one else to judge what others do with their own hair while on vacation. If you don't like it ,don't do it. I personally think it is far more tacky to judge others for having fun and doing something they normally wouldn't do at home with their hair.

:confused3 It's just for fun and to get other people's opinions on matters on unimportant things that don't affect the world :teeth: ---like I said, it reminds me of Monica and I do laugh to myself :lmao:
***btw I did get them for DD who was 6 at the time and we thought they were precious(as all parents do :goodvibes )

I say yuck. I have long blonde hair and was approached many times while cruising on the various islands. There is not a chance I'd be mistaken for Bo Derek and honestly I don't really think it was a good look for her either. I also don't think it seems too sanitary.

I personally do not like the way it looks on most people. Some women can pull it off, but I think you have to have very thick hair for it to look good.

I never realized that people cornrowed their hair so they would not have to comb it on vacation. I guess I can see the logic in that. I just throw mine back in a ponytail and am done with it.

Me, personally for myself, I love cornrows. I had them put in on Castaway Cay. We will be taking another trip next April and will get them put in again!!! To each his own, but I don't think that I looked that bad. Did I?? :confused3

I don't know about where the rest of you are from, but around here, cornrows aren't a "souvenier" from a trip. It's, and I pray this doesn't make me sound like a racist, more of a African-American thing. I don't think I have ever seen someone of another race in cornrows. It's usually worn by someone in a shirt 3 times two big with their pants hanging down to their knees, etc.

As someone else already mentioned - they are fine on kids and African American women, but don't think many Caucasian women look that great in them or can pull it off. Having said that, I wouldn't deny anyone the fun of a special holiday thing or anything like that...basically to each his own! :wizard:

edited to add: also, while it may be fine while "on holiday" and everyone is on the same page - I think they look kind of silly once you are back in the "real world".

No way would I ever let them get near me with those combs that have been used on God knows how many sweaty heads. BLECH!
Plus I would look ridiculous. :teeth:

I like them on kids and AA men and women but I think they look out of place on white people, IMHO. Although people's hairstyles don't affect me since I'm not the one wearing it so I say if you like it and can pull it off, go for it!

They are really popular our area and have been popular for years now. DS had them last summer (he's mixed B&W) and he liked them, he has the face and head shape to pull it off. It all kind of depends on head shape and face shape too though, regardless of race...if your forehead is high and you have a square head shape then they can look akward. I don't consider them a trend though, just a very versatile hair style that doesn't much go out of style IMO. *shrugs* Here's some more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornrows

Now see you look cute :thumbsup2 ...for the length of hair you have it totally suits plus you only did 1/2 your head but there are some who do have their hair shorter and figure it would look just great to have the entire head in braids with beads which generally is not a good look :lmao:
