Hello all! I know other people have reported problems with booking HA rooms in advance, but I just wanted to reiterate the importance of checking at least 15 times
.
We booked our trip over the internet back in January, and I phoned up to let them know I needed a wheelchair accessible room. I told them that I needed to be able to get the wheelchair into (and preferably around) the room, and would benifit from extra grab-rails in the bathroom. Thanks to all of you guys, I knew to ask for a HA room with a tub, as I didn't want to take a roll-in shower away from someone who really needed one. I asked if I needed to talk to Special Reservations, but they said they would handle it.
I then phoned up a few months later to confirm that my special requests were still there, and they said they were. I asked if I had had an accessible room blocked for me, and they said I had. I checked this every time I phoned up (about 3 times between booking and last week, I think), and they reassured me that I had a room blocked.
Well I phoned up the night before last, to confirm one last time (yup, I'm paranoid), and they said they had no record of it
! After a bit of to-ing and fro-ing, I was put through to Special Reservations, and the nice gentleman there was extremely helpful. In fact, he booked me a room with a roll-in shower, which will be a huge help, and we're leaving next week (I didn't think that would be possible!)!
It turns out that they'd just listed wheelchair accessible as a preference in my booking (similar to room view or location), and hadn't informed Special Reservations. I know that, as a medical need, it would be accomodated before preferences, but it was a bit frustrating to be told it was blocked, only to find out a week before we travel that it wasn't.
Anyway, Disney have been as wonderful as ever, and everyone I spoke to was extremely friendly and helpful. However, I get the feeling that the procedure for booking an HA room (especially one with a tub, rather than a roll-in shower) is a little confused.
My tips to anyone in a similar situation are to keep checking, and ask to speak to someone in Special Reservations, if at all possible. I'm sure everything would have been fine, even if I hadn't phoned up every other week
, but I just feel a lot happier knowing that a suitable room is blocked off for me.
