Better make sure when you close that account that you ask the bank about automatic charges submitted to a closed account. We once closed an account because we couldn't get a company to stop our automatic withdrawal/payments and thought that would stop it and then we received a letter from the bank stating we had a negative balance. I had documentation of the closed account from the branch where we'd closed it and also letters to stop the automatic payments to the company in question.....but anything automatic presented (within a certain time period which I think was maybe a year?) on a closed account is still paid and then they charge you ISF fees and if you don't pay them they file it on your Social Security # and your Drivers License number so when you present a check from your new account at any store it will be denied! We went through a lot because of an issue like this....best advice, don't use your checking account for automatic payments unless you're sure about the company. Use a prepaid Visa if you have to charge something or just write the check and spend .37 cents to mail it....saves a lot of headache.
