Warning About Permanent Board Sad Stories

I would include getting WIC or Snap from the taxpayers while taking multiple WDw vacations in your list too.

Seriously?! That would be whacked! If you can't feed your family you need to figure out your priorities!

Okay, WOW, you caught me. Here is the updated version by SNOPES.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/charities.asp

I wasn't trying to "catch" you - if you are copying information from somewhere, providing a source should be a given.

I actually didn't think that the numbers you quoted were as wrong as they are. It looks like the efficiency rate of the Salvation Army is among the lowest in the list - not the highest.

$.93 for every dollar seems efficient to me. Am I missing something?

so another thread that started off with good intentions turns into an "I know more than you thread".................nice...

Really? I thought it was a conversation about something good and important.

People aren't being nasty.

Unfortunately they don't cover the Salvation Army. :)

WOW! But they cover the Red CRoss. I have heard horror stories about that organization. Remember the billions of dollars they collected on September 11th? There were big issues that the victims did not recieve any of that money. Also, heard the latest about Hurricane Sandy. People were in despair and were calling the RED CROSS a disgrace because they were not helping any of the victims. Plus the CEO makes MILLIONS of dollars, the Salvation ARmy CEO makes I believe $120,000. I'm not a Red Cross fan.

They've turned over their primary info to charitywatch I think. Even though it wasn't required but to get the info out there. Since they are such a large group and their funds often stay local it is nice info to have. Lol, just because you don't like them doesn't mean others might not be interested.

They aren't my favorite charity. We tend towards make a wish and children's miracle for personal reasons. As well as our local shelters and children services. Everyone has their own preferences.

I know well the threads you are talking about and yes, we all need to be aware and careful.

I do want to tell you all about something that happened to me 2 nights ago on the community board though.

I read a thread about a health crisis by a poster I wasn't familiar with. She said to pm her for an address if you wanted to send cards or I was sure I read to send $. I was surprised by that and I admit a little suspicious. Then I saw a link to her trip report from 2006 or 7 and read it straight thru. All 40 something pages.

What I read about this brave young lady and her family was inspiring to me. The challenges she has faced are huge. Based on many things in the trip report, I believe this to be true. By the time I was done reading the trip report, the thread had disappeared. Then I found another thread on the disabilities community board about this and it isn't asking for money.

All I can say is I was so glad to be wrong and I am truly humbled by what I read. I'm not even sure what I'm trying to tell you all, so thanks if you made it this far. Sorry OP to go off topic some.

I did the EXACT same thing as you did. I read that post and then went on to read her trip report from 2007. I couldnt pull myself away and spent hours reading it. I too, was inspired. I also went back to see her recent post and it was gone. I am sure she didnt realize that she had done anything wrong. I'll have to check out her other post on the diasabilty board.

I also know some of the posters that the OP was refering to..........anybody want some Honey Baked Ham or an American Girl doll???

Can we PLEASE stop bringing up public assistance on this forum? You don't know their stories. I work with the homeless every day, waking up at 6am to serve them coffee in the dark as they get kicked out of the shelter. I challenge all of you to walk a mile in their shoes. If only you took the time to help them out rather than judge.

I suggest you read NPR's piece on the culture of poverty and the book "Scratch Beginnings." Will give you a different perspective on the working poor.

Homeless is far different from on assistance and raking disney trips. Comparing the two trivializes true need.
