Waltons Remake

yeah....but ghostbusters is looking really good...can't wait to see what fast food has the cute stay-puff toys
Yeah I do want to see that. I noticed some merchandise gave away some certain plot details but the whole thing looks like it's pretty loyal to the original movies.

When the show aired there were many people, my parent's included, who had lived during the depression and could find things in common with the Walton's. That is no longer true today as most of these people are gone. While I might enjoy it, harking back to memories of my parent's, I am not so sure others would.
Maybe they're going to update this for modern audiences. The Waltons discover a portal in an old mine, and they're transported to the present to discover a gluten-free WiFi world. They run screaming back to the Depression-era.

Or they'll do what Lost in Space did for Swiss Family Robinson and just plop the Waltons on a starship stranded somewhere on a backwoods planet. "Goodnight, John Boy!" "Goodnight, Zordak!"

In truth the rural families for once did have it easier than city dwellers. They could hunt, raise, grow and process their own food and were very use to economizing. Weirdly one of the times when being poor actually prepared you for a crisis.

My mom, a late in life child, was raised on a ranch by depression era adults. Those skill sets and life hacks were things my grandparents taught her and she taught me. Not that I use them very much. I'm a hunter/gatherer of the local supermarket instead of the land, but weirdly remember those lessons from when I was a kid.

In truth, they had it worse. This is because rural America was in depression in the 20s before even the crash hit in 29. the 20s were not so roaring out on the farm. There was and is no magical life hack or pixie dust that allows poor people either rural or urban, to eat like kings consistently. And yet, that's what the Waltons depicted. They ate like kings. Roast pig, turkey, chicken, vegetables, pies, and cakes galore. You name it. My parents grew up in the great depression in what was then a rural area. You know what they ate? Mostly mush. And sometimes a little ham they cured themselves. I mean the Waltons as depicted in the show owned a whole mountain, a sawmill, a truck, and ate like kings. That is extremely well off compared to the average person of the time many of whom were tenant farmers. Meanwhile, in real life, the county on which the story is based lost 5.4% of its population during the 20s, another .6% in the 30s and 13.5% during the 40s and has yet to recover to 1920 levels of population. And in the rest of the country, 2.5 million left the dust bowl in the 30s, one of the largest migrations in U.S. history. These don't occur when or where the average person is eating Turkey day feasts every time they sit down to dinner.

This is the real Hammer House.

The latter is quite a bit bigger.

In reality when disasters hit, poor people tend to fare worse.

My grandma was a young wife and mother in a very rural area during the Depression. Her entire life she canned and put all kinds of fruits and vegetables up, even when they were readily available at grocery stores. My dad once asked her why she continued, and she said she had been hungry and she was never going to be hungry again…

I’m also passing on the remake. I didn’t like the original, why on Earth would I want to see the Depression?! I don’t care how heartwarming the family is, the time period is a big no for me. There’s a reason Disney rethought the Depression building across the generation gap bridge…and not just the recession 🤣

I’m a huge fan of the original Waltons. Been to the museum and actual town, used to be active in the fan community, and still watch episodes regularly.

I watched the remake last night and enjoyed it immensely. Would definitely watch if it gets picked up as a series. It was similar enough to the original to be familiar but different enough to stand on its own.

Unfortunately I missed it last night (I forgot it was on). I am assuming, hoping it will be on Hulu or rerun. My Grandma grew up in Wisconsin (far from Waltons Mtn) during the Great Depression, but was a big fan of the show. I saw enough of the original to be familiar with the show because my grandparents were always watching it (my Grandpa who also grew up during the Great Depression didn't seem to care one way or the other, he was just chill like that)... I figure it is worth checking out, especially having a Christmas theme.

When I saw this thread, I wasn’t sure I’d like a remake, but as another big Walton’s fan, I’m glad to see you liked it. I will have to check it out. 👍🏻

My parents both grew up during the Depression era (so my life was heavily influenced by that, too) but they/we were in the city, so I couldn’t relate to the small town/mountain thing at all. But what I loved were their relationships, and I found it fascinating to get a glimpse into what it might’ve been like to live in a large, inter-generational, loving household during some really tough times as they pulled together. I joked when I met my husband that his family reminded me of the Waltons, compared to many of the dysfunctional families I grew up around, lol. (Maybe it was all an illusion, idk; appreciating it was fictional here in case anyone wants to yell at me.)

I hope I like the actors playing the characters as much as the originals. During the 70s I think most of them were pretty well known from the show (when there were only a few channels to choose from). I wonder if any of them will be making cameos?

ETA Miss Michael Learned, the Mom, and the kids, appear to all still be alive. The Dad and grandparents are gone.

My mom was the youngest of seven kids and would have been very close to the age of Elizabeth, based on the dates in the show. They lived on a farm when she was born, but moved to a small town similar to the Rockfish they had on the show when she was a toddler. My dad was a year older and spent his whole childhood on a farm. The only difference was geography, since my parents grew up in West Virginia instead of Virginia. I always had a soft spot for The Waltons as a result.

if it sticks with the timeline/locale of the original i can't see it succeeding-too many of the topics are too controversial for today's viewing audiences. the historical, religious, cultural and gender role aspects would be very offensive to many viewers. if they make changes to those aspects to make it more palatable to today's viewers then i feel they are doing a disservice to the historical documentation value of the original book/movie/series.

Did not like it then can't see me liking it now. I think it was an elderly watched show and assume most of the audience it had is no longer with us. I could have seen trying to reboot Little House as it had such a younger audience.

I think a lot of the "elders" watched it with their kids.

A Little House reboot is also in the works.
