Walmart update page 4

Another sad example as to how awful this company is to their employees.

This is why I don't shop there. I'll pay 10 cents more at Kroger.

I know several people who work at Walmart, different locations. They are all happy. One recently had a serious illness, was in ICU. His wife also works there, they gave her paid leave for 3 months to take care of him. He had a million dollar hospital bill (3 weeks in ICU). His portion - $67. Granted, there are bad stories but I wouldn't make a blanket statement that they are awful to their employees.

We have a greeter in our store in a motorized wheelchair. I'm curious to see if she's still there...

Interestingly, our Walmart (I'd guess most) have 2 entrances. There is only a greeter on one side.

This is supposed to be nationwide? Because the greeters in the three stores I go to are still the same and very advanced in age. I'd lay money not a one could lift 25lbs let alone 50lbs. They did however, hire security guards for one door and it's always the same door,it doesn't rotate. I always find myself thinking if someone wanted to get away with sometching they'd just need to hit the other door.

Is there another source for this story?

Here it is from Walmart - by their own statistic 20% of greeters at stores where they rolled this out, won't remain as new "customer hosts" , although they word it like everyone choose to leave.

Funny, I haven't ever seen a disabled greeter at Target.

They don't have greeters. However, they have employed disabled people without requiring them to be able to lift heavy objects.

Thank you. Our greeters have always checked receipts, helped with returns, straightened up and point people in the right direction. It says in this that they know it won't work for all stores so will be implemented where needed and greeters will remain in other stores. I don't see anything about the additional requirements (stocking shelves, lifting 50lbs, working a register) cited in the first story. Or am I misunderstanding and those things would be required of a greeter applying for another job and not a "host?" If that's the case I'm not seeing how this guy wouldn't qualify as a host.

I am curious what job they have them do?

I guess some staff cash registers or customer service. This WM greeter apparently had the issue with his vision, which would preclude him from register positions. Target apparently has employees working the floor and helping people find things. Sometimes it's just getting something from the stockroom that isn't on the floor. It's not heavy lifting, but customers tend to remember when an employee is providing individual attention.

I have never seen a disabled person working at a Target. I have only seen many disabled people working at Walmarts who would never have been able to work the floor or assist customers to find things.

They are requiring it for "hosts" and most of their other positions now. At this store they claim there is no position suitable for him. Meanwhile those that shop at the store keep sharing stories where he bungeed their carts to his wheelchair so he could assist people out to their cars, or came driving his wheelchair the whole way to work every time they needed him to fill in for some able-bodied person who couldn't make in due to weather.

Meh. We just had 30 people laid off and the next week 8 new job postings. The people were laid off due to technological changes and their jobs were not needed anymore. The new jobs created need more education than most of these people have and are slightly different job description but mostly the same as the old employees were doing. Couple of the people laid off are disabled.

It happens all time in the workforce. I don't think any less of Walmart. I hate seeing my coworkers going but I understand why it happened. Jobs change. People sometimes lose jobs.

There is good and bad about Walmart. Around here, their Neighborhood Markets are about the only grocery stores that actually have full time employees with benefits. The Union stores all keep their workers at 19 1/2 hours a week....since they have provide benefits for anyone working 20 or more hours a week. Granted, the union job pays $20 an hour, as compared to $12 to $16 an hour at Walmart, but whats better, a part time paycheck at $20 an hour of $390 gross a week, or a full time paycheck of $480 to $640 a week WITH benefits?

I can't believe people still shop at this craphole. Aren't your scruples worth more than the few pennies you may or may not save? Shameful.

I've not managed to find a Walmart on previous trips to the states and I'm desperate to go.....only for the people watching.
