Walmart update page 4

Cold. I guess that's a prime example of the real cost of shoplifting.

Would be great if another store in the area swooped up such a dedicated worker.

They are just like any other big box retailer...no better and no worse.

True, and I do try to avoid shopping at those as much as I can...but we do break down some times...and yes, we have Amazon Prime, but mostly for the video on demand...I also try my best to use them as a last resort as well.

Granted I did not read the link but by your description the American disabilities act should cover his job and not allow him to be fired from such an already hired position. At least that was my naive thinking.

The explanation is they got rid of the position. Then created new similar position with additional functions he is not capable of. Then said he wasn't physically able to do any other job they had, so they wouldn't hire him into a new position. Now sure how that will play out in court, but basically it is their plan they are rolling out for all their greeter positions nationwide.
Soulless, immoral but not I'm not sure its illegal ?
If corporations are people, they are jerks.

My brother's father-in-law got a job as a Wal Mart greeter several years ago and they asked him to clock out and help unload trucks.

He told them in no uncertain terms what they could do with their job. . .

I miss the days when they ran commercials highlighting how they would go out of their way to buy items Made In America...but then they decided to lead the retail exodus to buy things Made in China to increase the profit margins.

Don't forget the tactics they used on those American manufacturers. Several could not survive on the pricing structure Walmart forced them into.

Only in America can a company that employs a near-blind guy, who can do little more than sit in a wheelchair, for over 20 years - get slammed for being cruel to the disabled.
Who says all he can do is sit in a wheelchair? He was a valuable employee, and people went to the store to see him . During our frequent snowstorms he was one of the only reliable employees. Walmart admits he did the new parts of the job "informally" before, (checking receipts, straightening up) but are now arguing he can't do it "formally". Mainly because he can't load groceries into a car- (cause Walmarts are known for that, smh) I imagine the fact that he has gotten raises for 20 years and they can hire a kid at minimum wage now has a lot more to do with it.
I suppose, since you think he isn't worthy of work , that you are comfortable supporting him fully with your tax dollars?

I didn't say he wasn't worthy of work. According to him, he couldn't handle being a greeter (with the new guidelines), cashier or stock shelves.

I hope he can find a job for which he is capable, so our tax dollars don't need to support him, but I'm not prepared to force companies to hire - or keep employed - employees who are incapable of safely carrying out their duties. I also don't believe it is our place - or the government's - to dictate what the criteria of being a Wal-Mart greeter should be.

But I do commend Wal-Mart for keeping this guy gainfully employed for over 20 years.

No, according to Walmart he can't do the new duties, some of which he was already performing. He admits he can't lift 50lbs. He is not useless.
And it wasn't charity that Walmart hired him in the first place. He performed his job better than most, diligently coming to work when others said they couldn't. He gave them 21 years. I commend him for his excellent work ethic, and loyalty.

Vlasic gallon sized pickles for $2.97. That was legendary. They threatened to buy from a competitor instead, like Heinz, if they could get the same deal. Eventually they relented and changed it to a smaller bottle where Vlasic could make a reasonable profit.

My local Costco has a guy in a scooter checking receipts at the exit or memberships at the entrance. He does a decent job, and that's a reasonable accommodation that he gets those jobs instead of cashiering or stocking. Another one has a guy who appears to have CP. He slurs his speech and has difficulties with motor control, but he can operate the register just fine. He's also really popular because he does an efficient job and is cheery.

WM could probably find something for him to do rather than just let him go.

Only in America can a corporation fire a disabled guy that has given his best for 20 years and have someone commend the corporation for it.

Good for him. Making people work off the clock is nothing more than thievery. The Chinese Embassy of Bentonville is not all that great a place to work anyway.

This is supposed to be nationwide? Because the greeters in the three stores I go to are still the same and very advanced in age. I'd lay money not a one could lift 25lbs let alone 50lbs. They did however, hire security guards for one door and it's always the same door,it doesn't rotate. I always find myself thinking if someone wanted to get away with sometching they'd just need to hit the other door.
