Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

Hello walkers:

Well we did 3 miles yesterday. Temp was good. If it’s too hot I get a massive headache if I overheat. No amount of water will help. I will get some supplements and see if they work better for me. I think the dehydration problem is a factor in my performance.

Last week we walked in the rain and it was heaven. I have to get back up to speed and my 5-6 miles of training. This weekend I want to try a road course of 6 miles to see how my speed is. All my miles above 3 are on the track and those conditions are ideal but I need to be in the “real world”. Thunder showers are predicted for tonight so I may end up inside on the TM or Ellip.

Thursday here in town we have the CIGNA 5k race. Weather prediction is dry and 74! What a blessing. Last time I was in that, it was so hot, someone actually passed away on the course. They have a walker division, the power walkers and strolling.

Good Luck everyone in their continued workouts!

I am going to hell for sure. This week, since I just got my Garmin and it was really too hot to train hard, I decided to "coach" hubby for the 2 half-marathons and 13K he has signed up for (2 of them against my better judgement, but I'm a woman, what do I know?) My plan was to coach him for an 8-mile walk and then go on and do another 6 by myself. Problem #1 was that instead of getting out the door at 5:30 as planned, we overslept and ended up being 2 hours behind schedule. Not good when the temps are predicted to be near 100 that day. OK, it's hot as the place I'm going to and humid as can be, so I say 8 miles is good enough for both of us. My goal was to see just how well within regulation time (16-minute mile) he could walk over an extended period of time. He's been using a pedometer and clocking in at about a 15-minute mile give or take a little, but we knew the Garmin was more accurate. First mile was a 17:22 and no matter how fast or slow I go, he's always 3 steps behind me. So we speed up and by the 2nd mile we're only a tiny bit behind (32:16) but still behind. By the 5th mile we're about 1:42 under regulation which is good, but not really enough cushion for a bottleneck, potty stop, shoe adjustment, etc. Meanwhile, with the exception of a few hills, I'm feeling like I'm going for a stroll in the park. Somewhere around mile 6, he's alot more than 3 steps behind, but he tells me to go ahead because we want to get the distance right on the Garmin (normally I would just backtrack). We turn a corner and I lose him. I'm down to a 22 minute mile and when he finally catches up, everything is cramped and hurting. So we go back home doing just under 7 miles at an overall pace of 15:46, which I'm thinking is not very good. I got him rehydrated, and made him take a cool shower with some ice therapy body wash, but he was really hurting the entire day. I felt so bad, because I thought I was just being a good coach! It turns out he's about ready to throw the Garmin into the garbage! I'm thinking that unless he does some serious training, he's not ready for the 2 half-marathons coming up. The first one is in the beginning of November and i'm willing to walk with him, if he can get down to a 15:30 pace. I won't be doing the Donald in January, so he'll be on his own then (with the exception of other WISH team folks) I think there very well may be a sweeper in his future.......and I feel like such a drill sargeant!

I saw this blog on another website and it's worth reading. I will PM you with the entire blog.

But I’m not here to discourage you I’m here to let you in on a secret. You DON’T have to maintain a 16-17 minute pace to complete the race and not get swept…well almost.
Actually, you don’t have to maintain that pace for the ENTIRE distance but instead, just a little over 75% of the distance or over ¾ or 10.2 miles.
There are four checkpoints to worry about in this race.
These checkpoints are listed on the half-marathon site and I’ve gathered them here for you to read.
Mile Mark: Location Description Time Allowed:
3.5 WALT DISNEY WORLD® Speedway 1:11:00
6.3 Magic Kingdom® Park Security Gate 1:56:00
8.1 Magic Kingdom® Parking Lot (Daisy) 2:25:00
10.2 World Drive Ramp to EPCOT® Center Drive 2:58:00
Once you hit that World Drive Ramp you can relax and finish the race at the comfort level that suits you.

Thanks for the info, Denise......I tried to respond to your pm, but it just kept going round and round.....oh well.
I'm going to have to work on the boy! He'll be fine for the Tof T event, but I am worried about the 2 half-marathons. The one in Raleigh has a portion designated for walkers, which is very nice, but the requirements are the same as WDW (16 min/mile). They probably won't have sweepers, but it would nice if he could officially finish. I've only done one other event and they were very sympathetic to the slow people. After Nancy and I finished, we were walking back to our car and spotted 2 women that were still walking and were about a mile from the finish line. One was quite old (late 70's or better) and the other was obviously a cancer survivor. The race officials directed them to a little short cut that probably cut off a good 3/4 mile off their route. I remember checking the results afterward and I think they both were listed as finishers although they were slightly over regulation time. Now I guess there will be some people that would differ with this, but I was very happy to see the officials giving them a little break. I can't think of 2 more deserving people to get a medal...except perhaps the one-legged man who set a tough pace for Nancy and me the first half of the race. He finished just behind us fair and square, but sometimes rules are meant to be tweaked.
Anyway, I am WAY off the subject here......

My biggest concern about the sweepers is that the amount of time they allot you to cross the start line is not accurate. Just last week someone posted somewhere that his wife was swept because she was in the last wave which crossed the start line later than the alloted time and it was not adjusted. I am a walker...I do not want to slow down the runners and, heaven knows, I do not want to get trampled. I will deliberately be way back in the pack, but don't want to get penalized for starting late.

I tell you one thing that helped my husband and now he’s a better walker than ME! I purchased an IPOD Shuffle for him filled it with some zippy songs. He flies around that track.

A great investment!

Jeanne,

My DH will be walking the WDW half next Jan. He has completed two half-marathons, both right at the 16mpm. Please don't stress your DH about his pace, Jan is a long way off and there is plenty of time to work up to it. I know I was so worried about my first half WDW Jan 2006 - one thing I did was make sure I was on the first bus over to Epcot and went right to the staging area so that I could be at the front of my corral. That extra little cushion made a lot of difference to me psychologically! My DH will be proudly wearing his WISH shirt, tell your guy to look for a really big guy glowing in the dark (yes at 4AM the shirt does seem to glow) he will glad to have some walking company!

Jeanne--- You moved the office and did that 7 mile walk, I would say you deserved a rest day. I think the pushy up thing you are looking for is the Body Glide. I finally had to breakdown and buy some as I had the chub rub thing going on my inner thighs. OKW now has some of the H20 products in the store down front. They have the shampoo like we got on the cruise and some sort of shower gel. I love the shampoo and will have to restock on my next trip. You know where I am coming from about John and his walking so I don't even have to make any comment. Is his life insurance paid up?

Denise--- Are you doing the 5K? Good job on your walking.

Nancy

Just to clarify, if your DH sees a really really big guy with a glowing shirt, that will probably be me. If he can't find that other little really big guy, I'll walk with him.

Jeanneg: Thanks for the information on the body wash! I appreciate it. I am sympathetic with your issues with dh.....mine started the Couch to 5K a few weeks ago, and we never got beyond week #1 training. We repeated it three times, and then the whole thing came to a screaming halt.:confused3 :confused3

I have learned to let it go! He is going to do what he wants to do ((((even though he asked for my "help")))))

Oh well!

Beth

Pat&Nepatsfan: This is just too funny because my DH will be a big guy in a glowing green shirt also! They can all just find themselves! Actually he's round but kinda short......somewhat like a glowing green lightbulb! (As she goes deeper into H-E-double L)

Nancy: funny you should mention life insurance......we've always had a hefty term policy because with 4 kids it was a necessity. Now that he's getting up in years, the rates are going sky high. Since the kids have all reached majority and are nearly done with school, we just switched it over to a flat whole life and dropped the principal to a quarter of what it was before. We just did it 2 weeks ago and don't you know the thought crossed my mind on Saturday morning that maybe I was a little too hasty. :guilty: (I can't help it....I'm a finance major. :sad2:)

Beth: if you and Nancy order together, you will reach $100 in no time. And if you wait for specials you'll end up paying much less than the regular price. Recently they had a "buy 2, get 1 free" promotion (equals 33% off regular price) on the SPA line so I really stocked up.

Nepatsfan: ooops, sorry......didn't realize YOU are the hubby....my apologies for poking fun at you directly. (she says, as she removes foot from mouth)

Jeanee if there is a hell for walkers who get in the way of runners then we will just have to start a WISH Team with a "YARC" chapter. They will run us out soon enouth.pirate:

Guys don't be worrying about the ToT, we are keeping in a walking group so it will be easier for people to keep going. The required pace for ToT is 18 min per mile and the people doing the 6.5K have the exact same total time, so that should be doable for everyone.:cloud9:

We went for a rather warm 10K this morning. It was 90 with high humidity even early. We were planning on 8 to 10 but it was just to hot. So I came home and did 2 hours of yard work. That should do it for today.

Dear Pretty Princess, Erica wore her new Ecco walking/running sandals to walk this morning she said they did great. She wore her new white tiger Gym Girl skirt also. She is such a girl.

**Sorry about this post. Must have been a Blackberry error. Lily, feel free to delete, although it may be one of my better posts. **

Pat & jeanneg: Are your husbands Disney fans? If so, maybe we could commission one of the DIS creative shirt designers to make us a special iron-on for our WISH shirts. I am thinking something for the sleeve. My initial thought, in honor of Buzz (who also wears some lime green), is that we could be the BGMs (Big Green Men), with the motto "To 13.1 Miles and Beyond."

jeanneg: no offense taken (and get that foot out of your mouth. Do you know where its been?).

Finally, for those who didn't see the ToT thread, as of now the ToT 6.5K looks like a go for me (subject to life, work and the 4 kiddos eventual fall scedule of events). Now I just need to start training regularly to meet the 37.5 minute per mile pace. I probably won't get to WDW until late afternoon Saturday and will stay until late Monday. Anyone going to the Sunday MNSSHP?

Bill, since you are planning to arrive late saturday, you might want to ask Robert (UltraMickeyMouse) if you would be able to pick up your race packet with your number that late. You might need to arrive earlier in the day. With the other races they won't let you pick up someone elses packet or we would take care of it for you.

That arm patch sounds cool, I was thinking 26.2 and beyond since the marathon is the gateway to the ultra world. I have a feeling that once you get the engine going you will be unstoppable.

Dave:hippie:

Thanks Dave. I'm still waiting on WDW to release packet pick up times. The site says there will be pick up on Saturday, but no times yet. I may send an e-mail to emmi to inquire.

Whoooaa big fellah. What happened to one step at a time. For those of us doing the/our first half, that is a giant step (although not as big as Neil Armstrong's). You're already signing me/us up for a marathon. So much for moderation. Dave, you just "ain't right. ;-)

We will take up this conversation again after you cross the finishline of that Half in January. Put a few cold beers in ya after the race and I can talk you into anything.:rolleyes1

Guys there is a new shoe on the market. It's from Mizuno and looks amazing. A good walking shoe should be light weight, low heel and well cushioned. The new Mizuno Universe looks like it has promise. I want to try it on and walk around on it a bit before I shell out $120 for a pair.

http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpageMRS-MWVUNI.html

You don't need the high heeled ruinning shoe to walk in, that actually increases the stress on the foot since in walking you touch down and roll over the foot to the toe for push off. The lower the heel the more efficient the motion.

If anyone sees them in their running store or at a race expo try some on and let us know how they feel.

We are off to walk before it gets to hot this morning.

Dave:hippie:

Just checking in to say hello to my fellow walkers. Less than a week until the CDC half. Hope I am ready. It sounds like we are going to have a fun group at ToT. I am looking forward to it. My dd and I will arrive late Friday and leave Monday afternoon.

Take care,
Maggie

Nepatsfan: (BTW, what is your real name?) Very clever....I love it! Told hubby about it and even he loves it. I was thinking of how one could put a spin on the little green men thingy and you did it perfectly.

We arwe going to MNNSHP on Thursday with Nancy and her hubby. She's done it a few times before but I never have, so she can be my guide. We are planning to catch The Village People at Epcot on Friday night. If anyone is interested in that, let us know. We were tentatively planning to eat in Germany because it is usually very accommodating and not too pricey. It's also a great place if you're with a sizable group, so if anyone else would like to join us, let us know and we can arrange something.

Dave: not sure you answered my question.....where exactly can I buy those electrolyte tablets?

Nancy: about chub rub.....yes, it's pretty much unavoidable, but I swear by bike shorts. I always wear the lightweight ones under whatever else I'm wearing. It totally eliminates chafing for me. The only downside is that it will take a little longer to maneuver at potty stops. Unfortunately, most of the outfits that they sell for runners would only fit my big toe, so I have to improvise.

Someone previously mention Body Glide and one of our running stores was giving away a small free sample and I've yet to try it. My under arms rub and depending on the undergarment, can cause a problem.

Why not give that a try.

Jeanne here is a link to what we use. We got them at our local outdoor sports store.

Body glide is the best Erica swears about it. I use it for long walks, I chafe under my arms if I wear a tank top.

We wussed out on the heat and drove down to the Opry Mills Mall in Nashville. We walked a brisk 4 miles then had a heavenly lunch. Shrimp Scampi over pasta.
