Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

Thanks Team, you guys are the best.

Next race is on Aug 11th. It's in Franklin Ky and the walkers start 5 min after the runners race. Both are 5K so it's a challange to try to catch some of the runners. This race usually draws some big guns from the local walking talent because there is prize money and free shoes for the winners. This year the state mens and womens champions and the Tenn state champ along with several others are planning to come. With that kind of competition I hope to lower my PR for the 5K distance.

Oh did I mention I wasn't last this year. I know that sounds silly, but the majority of this group was high school cross country runners, boys and girls both as well as most of the local running club. At the beginning I was afraid that I was going to pull a DLF again.

Dave:hippie:

Dave-- Congratulaions on your race and not finishing last.

I did a 10mile LW today and I struggled through the entire walk. I have felt terrible the rest of the day. Usually when I'm finished I have some energy, but not today. I have no idea why it went so badly. It was warm but not unbearable but I do think it was the heat that got to me. I am going to have to start making a 1/2 gatorade and 1/2 water mixture and see if that helps on warmer days.

Denise-- Moving all those things is XT.

Kim--- How was your race?

Got to go make something for dinner.

Nancy

Oh Dave, those girls BEHIND you look pretty tired and it looks very hot.

My daughter and I did the track last night 4 miles but better than nothing. We were 3.5 miles into it when it started to POUR buckets. We cooled off and slow walked the remaining 2 laps. Tough pouring off the clothes but thankfully I had put a black tank on top of my white workout top

Way to go in the race not LAST!! On the other hand my competitive nature is to finish the race, not get swept - that's as far as I go. See YOU at the end - when I get there.

Yes it was very humid. I had a cat and mouse chase with several run/walkers who would take a walk break and I'd catch them, as soon as I did off they would go running again.

Isn't walking in the rain a wonderful feeling? Like you are so part of nature and not just passing through.

More pics of me walking the Bowling Green High School 5K race. I posted these in the weekly thread, but I think some of you don't go there so I cross posted here.

This is the walk group I could have raced with but I chose to walk the run race. The Blue Stang Conv is Erica (Goofyin08forErica) leaving.

The next pics are some racewalking buddies of mine. The first is the Ky State womens champ, I race against her a lot. The second is an up and coming racewalker.

Thanks for reading, I wish I could have just posted the picks and not the links but I haven't figured out how yet.

Hey everyone, sorry I didn't check in yesterday was so tired.

Did my 10K it was OK, major shin splints again, I seem to be suffering from them again, stretched and everthing soI don't know what I am doing wrong, but I seem to get them between 2 and 3K and they suck the life out of my legs for the rest of the run.

2 months today I have my first 1/2 marathon and right now I don'tthink I will make it unless I figure this out.

Dave: Awesome pic. I couldn't get the latest ones to work.

Nancy: WTG on your 10M. hope you are feeling better today

PatsBill: Have you registered yet?:rolleyes1

Good morning Kim. The pics work over at the weekly thread, I don't know why they don't where I copied them to the walk thread.

The shin splints. Are you doing any exercise to target them. To good ones are to sit in chair with legs straight out. point your toes as far out as you can then pull them toward you as much as you can. You should start feeling this in your shins pretty quick.

Lay on the bed on your stomach. Hang your feet over the edge and push against the mattress with your feet.

Get an elastic band and put it over your foot and do the first exercise with the added resistance.

I hope these help. Don't over due them at first.

Way to go, Dave....great job on your race! Loved the one photo, but couldn't get the others to open up. Glad to see you were wearing your WISH shirt! I just ordered several of my own in various different styles and can't wait to get them.
You are so funny about not wanting to be last. When Nancy and I did our very first event ever (Lehigh Valley Half marathon) this past April, we were joking about being the last 2. But we both promised to be polite and let the other one cross first! When we finally saw the results it turns out there was something like 49-50 people behind us. Of those, about 20 were people who had splits but did not complete the event in the allowable time. Then there were another 30 or so that came in with official times slower than ours. We were elated! Nancy and I had the exact same chip time but they ranked her higher than me. I figure she got the spot because either A) her split registered one second faster than mine or B) they gave it to her because she is......ssssssh.........older!

Dave--- Great job on your race and not finishing last. I will have to check the pictures on the weekly thread as I could not get them to open.

Kim---Sorry to hear about your shin splints. I had a problem with them earlier this summer in my R leg so I know how frustrating it can be. A week of rest, plenty of Advil, ice and a support stocking helped me. I looked like an old Granny walking with the support stocking, but it helped so I didn't care.

Jeanne--- I'm may be older, but I'm like a fine wine which gets better with age. Yea I wish. I am trying to use Alleve for all my aches and pains to see if it works better than the Advil.

Yesterday was a rest day and I felt much better than Sat. That had to be the worse walk I have ever taken and made me wonder what the heck I am even trying to do by walking a marathon. But it is a new week so hope things are much better.

Have a good day everyone.

Nancy

I understand about getting stuck, for me it's at mile 3, once I'm past that one I'm home free but then again it's when I do 4,5,6 miles. I don't know why that particular mile is the hardest but it is. I stretch every mile when I"m on the track and it helps a lot.

These seem to be what works best for me, a good warm up for 1 mile, and stretch doing these after each mile. I would like to have time during the race to do them but I need to keep my pace so will try a timed trial run for the 6 miles including stretching to see how I do.

Nancy: Sorry your walk was so tough....but we all have days like that. I didn't even get a LW in last week. I thoroughly planned to set my alarm clock for 4:45 and get out there early Saturday morning, but it never happened. I must have eaten something Friday night that didn't agree with me and left me married to the toilet bowl in the wee hours Saturday morning. When I finally got to sleep it was way after 2 a.m. so when the alarm went off, I just shut it off and rolled over again. I thought about walking when I got up a few hours later, but my insides were still rumbling and I did not want to somewhere in the middle of my 14-mile walk when nature calls. I think sometimes a rest is good for us both physically and psychologically. BTW, my Garmin arrived and I am anxious to give it a try. John and I took it out for a stroll.......it's exactly 1.25 miles to the bagel shop!
What's so nice about the Garmin is that you can share it with someone else because it doesn't have to be calibrated the way a pedometer does. I think they must be coming out with a new model because I got mine pretty cheap at Amazon.com

Denise, thanks for the shin stretches, I was just wondering today how to get a good stretch on them!

In this month's Walk! Magazine, they did a list (from the walkers section of the Running Room's forum) of You know you're a walker when. Here's a couple of the ones I enjoyed:

You know you're a walker when:

you consistently reset your car odometer "just to see the distance" of wherever you go.

your running shoe expenditure is more than 3/4 of your entire yearly clothing budget.

you're willing to spend more on a single pair of blister-preventing socks than you used to spend on earrings.

your co-workers move out of the way for you in the halls because they know they'll get run over if they don't.

you get up at 5am to get in a 15K before you go to work.

when hubby & the kids hop in the car, and you say "I'll meet you there" and walk instead.

your friends & family have to sprint to keep up with you in the mall! (i can relate to this one, as my DD kept saying slow down the other day!)

I thought you guys might be able to relate!

Good job, Stacy, I'm embarrassed to admit how many of those apply to me!

I was just at the mall with my mom, and she kept pulling my arm to make me slow down.:)

Thanks for sharing the above. I know there use to be a walk magazine that stopped publishing. Is this new?

Dave,   Way to go.

It is so nice to talk to other walkers.

Hey team!!!!

You guys are so awesome:grouphug: Thank you for all the advise, input and support!!!! There is not a better group of people anywhere:flower3: I do stretch them out but It isn't working for me. I will stretch them more regularly and so some strenght movements and see if that starts to help....man they hurt so much.

Hey did ya hear Dave wasn't last:woohoo:

MaggieWTG on your walking, great to get mom walking also

Stacey Yup alot of those apply to me

Ok back to work,.

I know this is silly, but I need a group hug. I am blessed to live in an area that has races with walking divisions and generous time limits for all participants. This is my 3rd "season" participating. I do not "race walk", but think that I have pretty respectable paces: 13:15 best for a 5k and then going from around 14:00 to 14:50 when my distances increase from 5 miles to half marathons.

Here is the silly but I still need a hug part: I did a 5 miler a few weeks ago in 90 degree heat with no shade on any of the course at a 14:15 pace and still I was embarassed at the finish because I was dead last at this pace.

Yesterday I did a 10 miler, again high heat and not enough shade, finished with a 14:45 pace and was again embarassed at the finish because I was dead last.

For the most part my times have stayed consistent and I actually I had a PR in my last 5k, but the number of walkers entering the races I do has dropped tremendously. Sooooo, where I used to be anywhere from 4-9 in a field of 20 - 25 I am now dead last in fields as small as 3 female walkers.

I think part of the issue is how this particular series of races is being "marketed" - they are being touted as being part of a training series for our city's fall marathon, so I think that many local walkers and those who run/walk don't get register because they are not training for the marathon, so they think they can't do any of these races. :sad2:

The 5k where I had my PR was NOT part of the series and it had 22 female walkers - I finished 5th. I also finished in front of 14 run/walkers - so there were at least 30 people behind me at the finish.

I think this is what is killing me mentally - in the past, I have competed in races where there are quite a few folks who are walkers or run/walkers with paces from the high 14's to the 18's, so I have never heard the "And here comes our final finisher" being directed at me.

I know it is not logical, but I just need to the hug to get me over the DLF part - thanks for putting up with this as silly as it is.

I think they started in 05. There was another walking magazine, it's gone now. This one is published 4 times a year, and it's got some neat articles. I've learned alot from it!

Disneywalkergirl: :grouphug: Don't get discouraged.....those are amazing times! And you did finish....so there is absolutely no shame in that. It seems to me that you hit the nail on the head about those particular races not attracting other walkers. Truly, those are awesome times and you will do fabulously in any of the WDW events, which I take it has LOTS of walkers! Just keep doing what you're doing and display all those finisher medals proudly.:cheer2: And shame on Dave :sad2: for putting a stigma on last place! :rotfl:

Disneywalkergirl:grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: Don't get discouraged....remember the WISH motto

DLF>DNF>>DNS

Dead last finish beats did not finish with greatly trumps did not start!!!

We where all just teasing Dave!!!! The most import thing is that you finished!!!!! Be proud of that and like Jeanneg said...display those medals proudly!!!! My biggest fear was always that I will be last but I can tell you now my biggest fear is not finishing a race.

Just a few more hugs to ya:grouphug: :grouphug:  :flower3:
