Anyone see the programme on BBC3 tonight about an investigation into Wal-mart?

Whilst we may love going there for our bargains, jeans, food etc. (my DW managed to spend $750 a few weeks ago on our last visit!), the programme highlighted some of the methods they use which could leave a little sour taste in youir mouth.

Tell me more. What was said ? It's a bit sad but I must have been to Walmart 10 times in our latest 20 day trip.

oh I forgot about this  wonder if it will be repeated. I love Walmart and we always have a mass spendathon here.

Mass spendathon!!! My wife (Ms.PennieLane please note that she is from Trealaw - must be a Rhondda thing!!) managed to spend over $700.00 in one visit last month!!

Anyway, the programme looked at their health and safety in stores - allegedley locking staff in overnight to prevent theft, no union representation, overstacking shelves - customers have been injured due to falling merchandise, their agressive defence of any litigation against them, their own "police", the unwillingness of any of the Walton family to speak to the press, the speed at which they are opening new stores and "damaging" communities etc. etc.

One anti-Walmart campaigner warned that the Asda - Walmart buy-out will not be good for the U.K.

It certainly was interesting viewing and did Walmart no favours!!

eek  certainly doesn't sound good for Walmart!

I blame hubby for the spending sprees myself - he's Welsh but was born near Barry...me I'm a cockney girl and we don't do spending sprees *cough cough* ;) cue comments about you can take the girl out of London etc etc lol

Surely this could be applied to most supermarkets. Sounds like a bit of a hatchet job.

How do you lock staff in when the front doors are open 24 hours a day ?

No unions ? Just check out the supermarkets in the UK.

Falling merchandise. Happens everywhere.

Defending against litigation ? Surely most large companies do that.

Police ? Don't we call them store detectives ? Tesco's have their own "internal investigations", if that's what the program is refering to.

Personally I'd be more interested in the policies of the fast food outlets. Read "Fast Food Nation" and you'll never eat at MacDonalds again.
